Intel Restructures LGA1366 Core i7 Lineup

Intel today restructured its high-end LGA1366 Core i7 processor lineup for the better. To begin with, it "released the Kraken" with Core i7-990X Extreme Edition, a new high-end six-core processor based on the 32 nm Westmere silicon. The 990X comes with an unlocked BClk multiplier, and carries nominal clock speed of 3.46 GHz. The Core i7-990X Extreme Edition displaces the existing i7-980X Extreme Edition from its US $999 price-point, which will be gradually phased out.

The non-XE Core i7-970 six-core chip received a welcome price-cut, it will soon be priced at $583 from its current $880. Apart from the six-core leviathans, the quad-core Core i7-960, which is clocked at 3.20 GHz, is now priced at $294, displacing i7-950, and providing an alternative to Core i7-2600K, which is effectively MIA till the LGA1155 chipset issue is resolved.

i dont think $250 for a 970 was a bad deal :D

good to hear that they are lowering the price on it though, still more than i'd ever pay for a proc

A used i7 970 seems more appealing now :D Probably around 4XX$, for an extra 200~250$ from my i7 920 D0 and I can get a 6 core!

Umm...last year? The Phenom II x6 launched at $200/$300 for the 1055t/1090t respectively. (maybe you meant Intel...?)

Luckily I only paid $580 (each) for both of my i7 970's. Makes me a little sad that I probably could have gotten them cheaper if I had waited a couple months...

Either way, I am glad Intel is keeping the 1366 going:)

I agree, and they should too as LGA2011 isn't here yet anyways, they should continue on LGA 1366 until 2011 at least.

With an i7 970, a person with a 920 gets a good performance upgrade and stays in the very high-end, making the life of lga1366 a lot longer, good news for lga 1366 owners

As far as I see it, Intel Extreme versions aren't worth the extra $500 just for the unlocked multiplier, unless you are a serious overclocker who likes to break new records or something like that....

I've been waiting for a very long time for the 6-core CPUs (Intel), hopefully, I'll have to withstand another 6 months.

I'm aiming to play BF3 with a new CPU.

It's not about justifying the price. Like it or loathe it, we have this system called capitalism. What happens is that the price is set at (what Intel believes to be) the profit maximising point. And, because the top 0.1% of the market will pay through the nose for a slightly higher binned CPU that will overclock a tiny bit further, they can charge a massive amount for it.

Is a new Bentley really 250 times better than a used Vauxhall? No, it isn't, but some people still buy it, because they are willing to pay lots more for something a bit better.

If it drops the price of the 970 and 980X, why not??

Also, not very rare are the people who buy computers with Intel's highest end processors and don't OC.

I'd be more interested in a newer chipset and a new series of chips. Perhaps a faster QPI with memory support comparable to the new QPI, a newer southbridge...
