AmacroX Displays Calmer 4 Fanless 500W 80 Plus Gold PSU

PSU maker AmacroX displayed Calmer 4, its new silent PSU for mid-range gaming PCs. The PSU is fan-less, and relies on passive convectional air-flow to cool components inside. It can deliver 500W of power, with an efficiency that earns it 80 Plus Gold efficiency rating. The Calmer 4 has fixed cabling, and provides all essential cables, including two PCI-E cables for a single high-end graphics card. It is backed by a 5 year warranty.

Why is no one making super silent low RPM PSU's? Either you have loud 750W monsters or you have weak 400W or 500W passive PSU's. I'm running a Corsair HX750 modded with 800 RPM Noiseblocker fan (140mm) and you can barely hear a bit of an air whisper when you place your ear like 2cm away from the fan. 2cm! So i have a powerful, dead silent and still cool device. Passive PSU's tend to get quite hot... I mean how hard can it be if i can make it? With use of some heatpipes they could offload the heat from most important components right on the PSU exhaust for maximum effect. Heatpipes are cheap these days as they stick them everywhere...

You must have very good hearing; I've never been able to hear a power supply in all my builds and I used Enermax, Antec and Silverstone so far. And I mean just the psu with nothing plugged using the motherboard connector trick.

That's because most users have loud gfx card or load CPU cooler. In my case, HDD was suspended on rubber, CPU was running the same low RPM fan, gfx card was also running a high end cooler at very low RPM. But PSU was running the stock fan which was producing a bit annoying buzzing and clicking in very distinctive intervals.

I currently don't have so silent system as i used to have at that time but it's still pretty silent. Actually right now PSU is the most silent component in my system for sure. I could use stronger fan actually but i'll just leave it for now.

Anted did make the Phantom 500.
It was a passive design but with a fan which would kick in when the temperature got too great for the passive to work effectively, and when it kicked in it would still be nearly silent.

maybe manufacturers just cant mass produce higher wattage power supplies at such a quiet level, or maybe they can and just choose not to.

personally I havent had any loud powersupplies, all of my systems (apart from my microserver) run on antec supplies.

NesteQ's unique signature are nearly fanles operation PSU's. But i haven't seen any of their units with my own eyes...

Lol, you must be deaf.

I swapped out my PSU fan with a Noctua and it's a night and day difference.

Zalman has been making PSU's that are whisper silent and have heat pipes, for years now. The reality is this, the vast majority of people in the market for 700+ watt power supplies, are also going to be running video cards that even on quiet settings completely eclipse any noise from a PSU. High end air cooling is far more audible than any PSU I have ever seen or owned, there is just not market for it, and it would add cost, because most people buy a PSU with the idea of getting 3-4+ years out of it (and some more than that!). I imagine it would be difficult to have the same kind of longevity and efficiency, with higher temps likely to be produced by a quieter cooling solution.

Calling someone deaf because he can't here his PSU is stupid.

That really depends on what PSU you have, SilverStone PSUs are decent unlike cheap units.
Also the fact that he has a 1000W monster and it is rarely under full load.

I can hear my psu plain as day. PSU's with larger fans seem less noticeable..... but the fans can only get so big. The need to start building mufflers around the fans to make them more silent. Yes they can do it. I did it on one. It just needs to have the necessary airflow.

Anything with a moving parts will create some noise but how audible it is depends on who is listening. Calling someone stupid for calling someone deaf is stupid as well.

I'd also like to add that many things will help produce louder, power supplies. When I first got my Kingwin 1220 watt PSU it wasn't audible, as the fan became dirty and older it became apparent it was there. That's why I swapped out the fan inside for a Noctua, problem solved.

I just bought a 1000w antec quattro psu and can't beleive they only stuck a 80mm fan on it, its noisey and I can hear it over a std AMD cpu cooler.

Back on topic - fanless with a gold rating is pretty good, it would make a nice heart in a HTPC. I don't really see much amacrox stuff in Aussie, another good psu brand we don't see here is FSP. :(
