AmacroX Displays Calmer 4 Fanless 500W 80 Plus Gold PSU
PSU maker AmacroX displayed Calmer 4, its new silent PSU for mid-range gaming PCs. The PSU is fan-less, and relies on passive convectional air-flow to cool components inside. It can deliver 500W of power, with an efficiency that earns it 80 Plus Gold efficiency rating. The Calmer 4 has fixed cabling, and provides all essential cables, including two PCI-E cables for a single high-end graphics card. It is backed by a 5 year warranty.

I currently don't have so silent system as i used to have at that time but it's still pretty silent. Actually right now PSU is the most silent component in my system for sure. I could use stronger fan actually but i'll just leave it for now.
It was a passive design but with a fan which would kick in when the temperature got too great for the passive to work effectively, and when it kicked in it would still be nearly silent.
maybe manufacturers just cant mass produce higher wattage power supplies at such a quiet level, or maybe they can and just choose not to.
personally I havent had any loud powersupplies, all of my systems (apart from my microserver) run on antec supplies.
I swapped out my PSU fan with a Noctua and it's a night and day difference.
That really depends on what PSU you have, SilverStone PSUs are decent unlike cheap units.
Also the fact that he has a 1000W monster and it is rarely under full load.
I'd also like to add that many things will help produce louder, power supplies. When I first got my Kingwin 1220 watt PSU it wasn't audible, as the fan became dirty and older it became apparent it was there. That's why I swapped out the fan inside for a Noctua, problem solved.
Back on topic - fanless with a gold rating is pretty good, it would make a nice heart in a HTPC. I don't really see much amacrox stuff in Aussie, another good psu brand we don't see here is FSP. :(
