Turbo Core Equipped Phenom II X4 Chips Sold in Japan

When AMD was giving final touches to its desktop six-core processors, the Phenom II X6 series, there was also talk of a new quad-core processor line based on the same six-core Thuban silicon, but with two cores disabled. The resulting silicon was codenamed "Zosma". Apart from the two "potentially" unlockable cores, Zosma brought to table AMD's Turbo Core technology, which dynamically overclocks two of the four cores beyond the chip's rated speed, while respecting the chip's stock TDP value. The Phenom II X4 960T, one of the first such chips, however, never made it to the market, AMD shelved Zosma.

Market hounds in Japan recently spotted stocks of "Zosma" Phenom II X4 960T Black Edition, thought to have been shelved until now. This quad-core chip with unlocked BClk multipler comes with the part number HD96ZTWFK4DGR, and is sold in PIB (processor in a box) packages. The chip was tested to allow unlocking of the disabled fifth and sixth cores, proving it's based on the Zosma silicon. It comes with a stock clock speed of 3.00 GHz (15x 200 MHz), but can bump clock speeds up to 3.40 GHz (17x 200 MHz). The chip features 512 KB of L2 cache per core, and 6 MB of shared L3 cache.

This might have been an exciting CPU.....12mths ago.

6 cores for the price of 4 and all that, but since SB came along, Phenom II's have just been left in the dust.

And unless AMD has truck loads of 6 core Phenom II's that they cant sell, i doubt we will ever see an official release.

Like intel do it yesterday with I7 980, stock cpu's dead generation just want to sell it in low price without make people who pay lot for same CPU's before a while pissed off.

this cpu has enough powerhorse to keep a rig alive for a few years, especially unlocked is hard to full use all cores so is not a bad investment no matter what new one is around corner

yeah i love that feature. it would help if just some cores that utilize.

Saw it priced around $175ish CPU only, compared to i5-2500k for $180-190ish (boxed w/warranty).

Any performance comparison between these two? Seems like SB win to me.

Try $210-225ish for 2500k... If you can get them for $180-190ish please share with the rest of the world.. :D This will have to be around $130 to make it.. You can get a 1055t for 160ish. Both of my 1055t's over clock to 4ghz with no problem on air and crunch 24/7.

He's referring to the Microcenter special that they run once every couple of months. I think last time they were advertised for $179. That's the only place with that kind of deal, but after tax it's almost $200. However, unless I'm wrong, a 2500k will still out crunch a 1055t, let alone this disabled chip.

That's overpriced for what it is, since there is only a chance that it will unlock. Not sure of your point with SB motherboard pricing. You can pick up a decent P67 board for $125. Not bad for new tech. After a few months, that price will drop too.

Aww :banghead: I forgot about Microcenter and there kickass deals.. :banghead: I don't have one near me.. and yes both of my 2500k's out crunch my 1055t's... but i've got both of them overclocked to 4.5ghz and crunching 24/7 as well... I've got a 2600k on my shelf and ram.. I'm just waiting to buy a MB... Sorry if i sounded out of line sportechie.. I've just got a splitting headache... and I need more Mountain dew.. lol  I think i'll go get more now..

You were not out of line in any way. Most of us are not lucky enough to have access to that kind of price.

i think if you were of a mind to overclock an older gen AMD,then this 960 would be a better choice than the 955/965/970/975 due to lower TDP.i wouldnt bother activating gimped cores as they may even limit the overclock....

The SB point was mainly centred on comparing different generations of tech and the prices accordingly, bulldozer to SB-E may be a fairer comparison as thuban is still old architecture much less deneb.

Wouldn't consider anything from AMD now that you can pick up a P67 or Z68 mobo and 2500K for around £250, best value Intel chipset and CPU in ages, best performance aswell if you stretch to the 2600K.

Intel are beyond dominating AMD now, beating them not only in performance but value for money aswell.

AMD need Bulldozer..

Very true.
AMD still surviving on rehashed athlon 64 architecture, fair play to them-its been a long long time!

We all need bulldozer to be competitive for a myriad of reasons tbh, competition is good for both camps and good for prices!

for desktop segment? yes..
but on notebook, err.. Llano APU still be the first thing that i would consider

Yeah, when both are at stock, the 2500k and 1100T are neck and neck. The 2500k does have massively higher memory bandwidth, though, and dominates it in games played under 1080p resolution (but who buys these kinds of processors for those situations?).

But bear in mind that both can be overclocked; the 1100T won't go much past 4ghz easily, and since its stock speed is already close to that, the 2500k does much better at the same 4ghz (most seem to be able to get 4.5ghz on a 2500k without too much trouble, making it worse).

I was commenting on WCG crunching numbers, specifically. I'm well aware of it's general dominance. ;)

Ahh, I see. I tend to consider the act of computation on a CPU to be referred to as "number crunching."
