XQD Memory Card Format Announced, Promises 125+ MB/s Speeds

Ready or not, here it comes, a brand new memory card format courtesy of the CompactFlash Association (CFA). Named XQD, the new card makes use of a PCI-Express interface (2.5 Gbps for starters, 5 Gbps in the future), features a durable casing that measures 38.5 x 29.8 x 3.8 mm (for comparison, a CompactFlash card is 43 × 36 × 5 mm while an SD card is 32 × 24 × 2.1 mm), and aims to deliver write speeds of 125 MB/s (and higher in future iterations).

"The XQD format will enable further evolution of hardware and imaging applications, and widen the memory card options available to CompactFlash users such as professional photographers," said Mr. Shigeto Kanda of Canon, chairman of the board, CFA. XQD memory cards are set to be showcased at CP+ 2012 (February 9-12) in Yokohama, Japan but it's still uncertain when we'll see them in stores. Licensing of this new format will begin in early 2012 so products supporting it should come later in the year.

So that means cameras are at some point going to have PCI-Express? Crazy.

probably yes, Nikon D4 series is rumoured to have a thunderbolt port. And next gen Compact flash standard(CF+) has a Sata port instead of current IDE port. :rockout:

I wonder why this is PCIe and not eSATA connectivity? If PCIe is suitable for an ejectable media card, then it is even more suitable to fixed disks, ie. SATA can be ditched, and we move over to PCIe connectivity for our hard drives/SSDs.

What does it mean for industry standards, and RAID etc. in the future. Let's hope one prevails and we don't have a multitude of interface options and different media products.

PCIe meets all the standards needed for a great interface, and lets face it esata is hit or miss on is it actually powered, and is it powered to specs, what cable specs dues this cable meet.

PCIe provides power, a proven reliable robust data interface, allows for a standard buffer at each end.

Sounds like there will have to be some new cameras coming out :D I sure hope with this increased speed they can allow the camera to be much faster. Though we do have cards that can already do 103MB/s read speed and a 95MB/s write speed, but hopefully these can help move the camera market into faster bus and cpus.:)

Crazy stuff. But I like it :) The only problem, what will happen to card-readers? :) Should we have keyboard with PCI-Express x1 cable ? :D

USB 3.0 will still be plenty fast for now and PLX have already made PCI Express to USB 3.0 bridge chips, so it should be quite easy if somewhat costly to make.
