Retail Radeon HD 7970 FOB Price Cut to $475, From $525

On the 22nd of December 2011, AMD launched its Radeon HD 7970, announcing that the cards will be available in the retail channels by 9th January, 2012. It permitted reviewers with access to AMD-made samples to post reviews on the 22nd, and told the press that it will have a FOB (freight-onboard) price (the price at which each card ships out of its place of origin, in this case Hong Kong, China) of US $525. Market sources told DonanimHaber that this price has been adjusted from $525 to $475. That doesn't necessarily mean that retail HD 7970 will cost lower than the $550 target retail price AMD talked about in several occasions. It will be up to downstream distributors and retailers on whether they want to convey this latest cut to the end-user, or keep a bigger "cut" (margin) for themselves. AMD hasn't officially announced any price updates so far.

Awesome! lets hope this will in fact adjust the retail price less than $550 One can hope or at least make it faster for price cuts from retailers.

Oh yeah. Atleast there is a chance that the retail price will be 500$!

I have heard that there are resistors under the CPU IHS near the die. Does anyone know what they are for?

It will just not initially. They will probably keep dropping it gradually so they can sweep the largest amount of cash (keep it at $550 for a while so that everyone willing to pay $550 buys it at that price, then drop to $500-$490 to get those that weren't willing to pay $550, then drop to $450 etc...)

They have some time to play with prices until Nvidia finally shows up to the party.

It does sound a bit low, even though retailers don't make a ton of profit on electronics - 4.5% is on the low side. Especially since it is an item that is primed to drop like a little price rock in 6 months.

Good News?
I am of course holding out for non-reference designs to see decent competition. I am waiting with bated breath on my Vapor-X model...Yep Sapphire man to the core. Been using them since my X800.

If AMD actually makes the official price tag of $475, it will be the best decision they have ever made in the history of their company. These cards would be out of stock for months.

The performance + price = FU TAKE MY F*CKING MONEY!!!!!!!

if they keep the extra $50, i hope they use it to go towards better coolers.

Well, now that AMD has accounced that, it would be bad press for the AIB partners to keep the price the same, at least for the reference design. If the reference drops to, say, 500$, perhaps we could expect some decent cards at 550$! :)

well its not price

FOB is Freight on Board price before shipping

it means the base price is $475 now add shipping around the world + everyone needs a cut of the pie means price MIGHT drop to say $525 retail down from $550

but AMD's stance is that this news is fud there is no reduction in price and thats from the Head of PR.

legitreviews.com/news/12143/

gave my boss a heads up so he checked in with AMD. so far this is pretty much Fud if AMD is just hiding it awesome means eventualy prices will get cheaper. but if what AMD says is true nothings changed so dont get your panties in a bunch. as prices might not change at all untill current stock is gone.

Well, if they drop the FOB by 50$, why wouldn't there be a 50$ price cut in the end? Of course that's assuming they don't plan to keep the money to themselves all along (the AIBs), but technically it could work that way. The 525$ FOB price did go along with a 550$ MSRP after all (though it wasn't official).

Edit: oh well :/

we will just have to wait and see but everyone here knows damn well prices will be INFLATED at launch due to demand, to be the first with E-peen power. Im gonna wait a bit tho and try and grab a Sapphire Atomic 1335mhz card if they release. so in that regard price dosent matter to me in the end. but if I wanted reference.... then a nice price drop would make the purchase decision much easier.

Eitherway time will tell.

Because thats called profit. Not adding anything onto FOB would mean retailers will be taking a LOSS on sales when they move the product. Crazyeyes is right. And for me to say Crazyeyes is right is like taking a hammer to my nuts.

crazyeyesreaperi would buy it. just so when i clock it up to 1.25ghz with voltage tuning etc i would end up with a gpu thats 40-50% faster then a GTX 580 3gb at less cost. and less power consumption. woot.
And I've had this for a year, woot. Have you had your 7970 for a year
