Ivy Bridge 7 GHz Rips Through Pi

Intel Core i7-3770K is turning out to be a monstrous overclocker, when assisted with extreme cooling such as liquid-nitrogen. One such test-bed, was overclocked close to the 7 GHz mark, and put through Super Pi (1M and 32M), and PiFast. At 6961.6 MHz, the chip ripped through Super Pi 1M, in 5.187 seconds. The same chip, clocked at 6650.1 MHz, crunched Super Pi 32M, in 5 minutes, 2.843 seconds.

In PiFast, with a clock speed of 6805.1 MHz, the chip hammered out a total computation time of 10.56 s. NordicHardware compiled a comparison table using HWBot and its own data, to reflect how much faster a ~7 GHz Core i7-3770K is, at Pi. The rest of the known test-bed consisted of ASUS ROG Maximus V Gene Z77 motherboard, and 4 GB (2x 2 GB) of dual-channel DDR3 memory, clocked at around 2652 MHz, with timings of 7-11-7-28-1T.

This amazing CPU is about one month away, and I can’t wait to order. My current Intel E8500 Core 2 Duo can barely keep up with my workload; the 3770K is just um spot on. When is Asus going to announce the Maximus V Extreme? Come on, don’t keep us waiting too long!:D

I'm interested to see if anyone can improve on that.

Fast overclock is fast.

It's a bit meaningless showing the 2600K at stock in that graph without also showing the 3770K & 980X at stock too.

Can you attach the power consumption graphic also please? ;)

Why does CPU-Z show only 4 threads (and not 8) in all three screenshots? could it mean that CPU-Z version to fully support 3770K is not out yet

A lot of CPUs when using LN2 can run at really high clock speeds. I'm more interested what it can do without such extreme cooling, you know, like with air or water. Nice results though. :)

Seems faster then Sandy Bridge: good.

However, why the hell does it have to be an old out-of-date benchmark to show this? Aren't there newer benchmarks that can show Ivy's superiority just as well, if not better?

Small, reliable and universally understood.

Fixed it for you.

Remember when Athlon 64 came out? Didn't it lose heavily in this benchmark but trounced Intel's best offering (@ the time) in pretty much everything else?

I would guess that HT was disabled, at those voltages and speeds HT would I imagine create significant heat and stress issues.

well they did say ivy bridge would be 10-15% faster than Sandy bridge so its right on the money...

You can get confirmation on the screen :toast: , 4 cores, 4 threads, so no HT ;)

Not in that sense, but in the sense that if you are comparing similar architectures. But I did forget about AMD's failure in many benchmarks compared to Intel, although its largely similar in real world applications.

.....and my i7 920 @4Ghz w/ HT off scores 10.209s, for comparison.:slap:

Because that's the only benchmark that can run, finish and give result at such high and unstable overclock without crashing.

While true, that's still idiotic: this benchmark runs on code that's there solely for compatibility purposes and is rarely used in anything else.

If @ this speed it doesn't do another bench successfully, turn it down a notch until it does: the same is valid for current CPUs.

My 2600K did 1M in 8.6 Seconds at 4.3Ghz so 10-15% increase is about right.

Hahaha, I am expecting to pay closer to $379 or $399 when the 3770K becomes available, $329 is a 6weeks after launch price...:D

Thats not what he was getting at though, he saw the 4/4, he was questioning why 8 threads were not showing and if it was a CPU-Z reporting error if you get my drift.

Man that is so incredible! Way to go Intel! Say what you will this was a great run for the chip!
