Intel Unveils Desktop Board Extreme DX79SR

Intel unveiled its third socket LGA2011 Desktop Board driven by its X79 Express chipset, the DX79SR. This model is positioned a notch above the DX79SI, and a couple of notches above the DX79TO. It was first unsuspectingly revealed to the world not by Intel, but NVIDIA, in its GeForce GTX 690 press-shots. The DX79SR covers up a few design shortfalls of the DX79SI. It adds two additional SATA 6 Gb/s ports, driven by a Marvell SE9128 2-port controller, and two additional USB 3.0 ports on the rear panel. The total of four USB 3.0 ports on the rear panel are driven by an unknown 4-port USB 3.0 controller.

Apart from the two onboard connectivity additions, Intel will also include a USB add-on module which packs 802.11 b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth 3.0 interfaces. The package of the board itself will be beefed up a little, with the inclusion of a stylish mouse pad and a thermal probe. To accommodate these features, Intel made a few subtle changes to the board layout, the first and second PCI-Express x16 slots no longer have switches between them, and some capacitors appear changed. With all these, Intel believes it has a shot at capturing the US $299 price-point, which gives it a nice spread from the $249 DX79SI and the $199 DX79TO.

I guess I was right about the fact that Nvidia was using a new board for the SLI GTX 690 picture then...

Uhmm the motherboard that includes the essentials without too many comments.

In any case a solid motherboard.

Sweet board......being that intel makes the chip......shouldnt their boards come with secret sauce that draws more performance out of their own chips?

I actually like them, the skulls give it a more serious down to business, no nonsense look. Or perhaps they listen to lots of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony music. They should get Bone Thugs to be like the face of extreme series motherboards, they already use skulls on their motherboards, and Bone thugs are widely known for their music and use of the same skulls. And Intel already has Will.i.am in the smartphones pages. i think it would be nice if they used Bone Thugs on their extreme motherboard page it would make much sense.

I should get me one of those Desktop Board Extreme DX79SR

Intel makes very solid motherboards. They don't claim to be top overclocking motherboards or anything like that. They claim to have great motherboards and as far as I'm concerned they do have great motherboards.

Other companies use gimmicks on their motherboards too, but at least the skull isn't ugly like bullets, magazine clips, and other crap like that. That junk just gives motherboards a cheap look IMO.

Ugh....you do know that the design is not the same as a traditional north bridge / south bridge design layout. Essentially there is no north bridge just like the socket 1155. The PCI-E lanes come directly from the CPU and other functions that used to be handled by the north bridge are either part of the CPU or part of the south bridge. The x79 and other chipsets are now located where the south bridge is, hence the reason the heat sink is so big. The "north bridge" area now has only the PCH chip I believe.

If I'm not mistaken, that only PCI slot will get covered when using a dual graphics card...For me is what I call bad design...

Haven't owned an Intel board since my D975XBX2 (BadAxe 2) back in the LGA775 days. Solid board with no complaints, though I expect nothing less of Intel.
