New Smaller And Lighter PlayStation 3 To Hit The Worldwide Market

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced that a new PlayStation 3 (PS3) computer entertainment system (body color: charcoal black / classic white), featuring a new design and a downsized form factor, will become available worldwide this holiday season. The new PS3 will come in 3 models including extended built in Hard Disk Drive (HDD) capacity of 500GB model and 250GB model, and a newly added 12GB flash memory model initially for Europe only.

Thanks to a complete redesign of the internal architecture, the volume and weight of the new PS3 has been reduced by more than half compared to the very first PS3 model with a 60GB HDD, and by 20% and 25% respectively compared to the current PS3. By adopting a sliding disk cover, the new PS3 continues with the characteristic sleek curved body design, which fits various places in the home and enables users to enjoy an array of entertainment content.
With the extra HDD capacity which has been extended from 320GB and 160GB, users can store and enjoy more and more entertainment content including games, music, photos, and video on the new PS3. In addition, the new PS3 with 12GB flash memory offers opportunities to experience the world of PlayStation at an affordable price point. Users can also expand the storage capacity of the 12GB flash memory PS3 by connecting a dedicated HDD (250GB) to be released concurrently with the new model5. In addition, a variety of accessories will be introduced by SCE to meet various kinds of needs from users including a vertical stand that offers more flexibility in how the new PS3 can be displayed.

Since the launch of PS3 in November 2006, the number of BD-based titles has reached more than 3,300 titles and more than 4,100 downloadable PS3 games are available worldwide, thanks to support from a broad range of third party developers and publishers. In addition to this extensive software title line-up, exciting and attractive new titles are to be released from third party developers and publishers as well as SCE Worldwide Studios, including Assassin's Creed III (Ubisoft Entertainment.), Call of Duty Black Ops 2 (Activision Publishing, Inc.), Madden NFL 13 (Electronic Arts Inc.), PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, LittleBigPlanet Karting, God of War: Ascension (Sony Computer Entertainment), and more.

SCE will further accelerate the expansion of the PS3 platform which is in the 7th year of its lifecycle, by continually releasing a vast library of exciting and attractive software titles and offering users a choice from a variety of hardware models.

It's rather interesting that the unit still consumes nearly 200w despite the numerous semiconductor process shrinks it has gone through over the last 7 years. The XBOX 360's PSU has decreased from 203w to 115w over its life cycle.

It's amazing that they haven't managed to upgrade the Wi-Fi to 802.11n over all those years as well...

is that a challenge? you know iv taken it apart a few times and its just a normal white black wire iirc i bet if i looked at some of my tear down pics and read the IC model and searched i could get a data sheet. if i get that you can see what laptop models are "like" it hell maybe the ps3 doesnt do any kind of internal hardware IDs in which case as long as the drivers are kind of close you might get one to work. sounds fun.

imma go to bed now though.

The black and white wires are the Wi-Fi antenna connectors...
Judging by iFixit's teardown, the Wi-Fi board is soldered onto the main PCB, so it's not upgradeable - guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/MuPTJIOYOSj5AxLl.huge

It looks rather nice, I would never consider downgrading to one from gaming on a pc.. but still it looks flashy.

I wonder how much larger the upcoming PlayStation 4 will be in comparison to this redesigned shrunk PS3.. when it comes out in the next 2 or three years?

Remember the PS3 has an off the shelf G70 chip from nVidia that Sony threw in there at the last minute. Its not a special custom design like the 360's. M$ found out the hard way with the original Xbox that getting nVidia to do anything is like pulling teeth. I wouldn't be surprised if the main culprit of the higher power consumption is the GPU in the PS3.

That said, the 12GB flash model is going to be a joke. I've come across some PS3 titles that are not optional installs.

Instead of having game bundles in North America, why doesn't Sony just give us the base model for $199? The Uncharted 3 bundle is a good deal at $269.99 but I like the 199.99 numbers better

I find it strange people are still complaining about PS3 lacking PS2's emotion engine. I have yet to meet a friend who plays PS2 games on PS3. If you do play PS2 games on PS3, why not just get a PS2 instead?

Price is a bit excessive I think, its easy to get a sub £200 PS3 new right now.

Atleast give us backwards compatibility.

Though I assume you were probably referring to the fact that there is no word of their next generation?

Someone here on TPU said that it will not be a heavy update with the next generation.

Sounds like a firmware nightmare. I guess you'd be the one to get it to work.

Soldered != unupgradeable.

If we use the previous generations as a model, you should me making room in your living quarters for a mainframe.

I have a PS2. I also have the PS3 with the emotion chip. I have kept it because adding something to our TVs that has wires is like starting war with my wife. That and the fewer systems on the main TV the better.

That would have been my advice before I got a PS3. The gaming is quite different between a PS3 and PC, depending on how you game sometimes its wiser just to get a PS3.

true, but on a forum like TPU i would recommend the gamers here save their money. i own a ps3 (the original from 2007) and it has been an awesome media player.

It really is not that much different, the cost of a reasonable graphics card + BD player is usually almost equivalent to the cost of a PS3. You get to have 2(!) entertainment devices, leave your dog on the PS3 while you enjoy the nets etc. Of course there is the cost of a TV which complicates things.
