I really dislike the fact that an ever increasing amount of communication goes through a company whos sole way of making money is extracting as much personal information from you as they can. In other words, I wish there was another way to subscribe to this apart from having to use facebook. I know I dont actually HAVE to participate in any way, but its just sad to see this happening imho.

Apart from that, Nice giveaway! I hope this stuff goes to the people that need it the most! ^^

... All you have to do is give Name and Email how else are they going to contact you? It's not like TPU makes you use some strange app that collect data from your Facebook...

Good luck giving away Facebook--I doubt that anyone wants it anyway. :)

Hehe, I was talking about using facebook as a whole. You have to be signed up to facebook in order to "like" something. Its not like i've got stuff to hide, but I dont know, I just dont like what facebook stands for, and I'd gladly pay a monthly fee for a service like it if they'd just leave me alone while using it.
But this discussion is a little out of place here, feel free to PM:)

my personal opinion completely agrees.

however, fb contests get the results .. so far already 100 people signed up.

Hehe, I also completely understand that, facebook is just by far the biggest social medium and gets to a lot of people. From that standpoint its a great idea.

Is it at least setup to where you need to be a member of TPU? Or are these giveaways like the GPUz partnerships where anyone can sign up and win? It would be nice if you at least needed to be a registered member as of the day before the contest (to prevent randoms from joining just to win a contest while also growing the membership base).

I don't see the point of your complaint as the "real" personal information in FB for me is my name (albeit it's only a nickname plus my surname) and birthday, and where I studied, i.e. you can opt to give the least amount of "real" personal information possible. I'm even an employee of a company that doesn't exist, while I have friends who are actually female that have "Male" as their gender (and no, they're straight). And I also don't see the "fuss" of the personal information given away by Facebook to advertisers whose ads I don't see at all anyway.

if you "like" something on facebook does that mean everyone else can see your name?

yes, they can
anyway it doesn't matter for me as they provide kind of registration form to enter the event

the registration form is decoupled from facebook. you submit only to tpu. unless you use the auto-fill option, then you have to tell facebook in the popup that it's ok to send your basic info to tpu

what about the non-facebook readers?

I sure do get tired of these facebook-only contests. This is actually illegal in many states in the US as an alternative method of entry is required so as not to discriminate. Do sites like TechPowerup not remember that a significant portion of their readership wants nothing to do with social media like facebook?

Bribing readers to post "likes" on facebook is certainly not a legitimate method of measuring a site's true readership. Good luck with that attitude.

"Facebook contests always get the results" -- you are only kidding yourself about "results". When the "results" are meaningless and self-fulflilling they are totally worthless. Facebook will be dead and gone in another 2 years or less -- what do your "results" mean then?

I dont have any time for facebook either, [id rather hang here to interact with fellow webizens],
but, nobody makes us enter, it does seem to be an increasing trend on many websites to run comps with fb unfortunately, so that counts me out, but thanx anyway w1zz, it's a generous and nice idea.

Yet another one of those LIKE Facebook contest... haven't people already had enough of faking themselves. I only see Facebook as another one of those dating sites for people who can't get laid in the real world. Just a bunch of people showing off all the fun things they do, the great friends they have and how supposedly creative they are. When in reality their life is so boring they don't do anything else but sit in front of their PCs post something and wait for someone to notice them.
I love both TPU and NZXT but why bother giving those people a chance to win these stuff when you have people here on TPU (or if you wish include other techsites) who are willing to participate and will actually appreciate winning these prizes. Thanks... but no thanks!:toast::toast::toast:
