If the chip exceeds 50watt (60 max) TDP it uses to much power for the notebook to be really "portable" just my opinion.

HD 7970M: 850 base freq. * 2 op's per clock * 1280 shaders = 2176 GFlop/s SP * 1/16 DP rate = 136 GFlop/s DP
HD 8970M: 900 boost freq. * 2 op's per clock * 1280 shaders = 2304 GFlop/s SP * 1/16 DP rate = 144 GFlop/s DP
Note that the 8970M's base clock is exactly the same as the 7970M at 850Mhz, so the difference is entirely due to the added 50MHz boost.
