Microsoft in Talks to Acquire Discord for $10 Billion

Microsoft is reportedly in talks with Discord Inc. for an acquisitions that sees Redmond pay $10 billion, sources tell Bloomberg. Discord is a major chat and collaboration platform popular with gamers, e-sports athletes, PC enthusiasts, and the tech community at large. The platform currently has over 100 million monthly active users, and has grown in utility as a collaborative work and learning platform owing to its free service model, providing not just text, but also group video. Discord has, in the past, been in acquisition talks with Epic Games and Amazon, so it remains to be seen if the Microsoft offer goes through.

Many thanks to DeathtoGnomes for the tip

Nope, screw that. As nice as the idea of integration can be, MS is gonna screw it up.

Get away microsoft stop messing with something that was already good. What I hate about this could be a clamp down of communities in discord if microsoft buy goes through.

Edit : off topic I miss microsoft msn.

R-T-BOh god, no... Microsoft leave it alone.

I don't want a Microsoft account and I know you are going to make me get one...
lol exactly

I was surprised MS didn't do this earlier. I wonder if discord is going to sell out? I guess for 10 billion anyone would.

I wish I held onto the hard drive of my first ever PC. Could've bought some IDE to SATA adapter and scour through all those memories. Sadly, I was tech illiterate and never even knew what a hard drive is.

I've used all the voicechats at one or another, and I have to say Discord is the best of the with ease of use and functionality. If you have never used discord, try it out for a few days, yes even TPU does have a discord server, I think is managed by @Toothless still.

Discord can be used in your browser but I think you need the stand alone app to use the voice chat.

Imagine buying Discord for $10,000,000,000 when you can just download it for free, smh.

_JP_Yes, this is what happened with Skype, if anyone recalls.
And exactly what they are doing to Mojang accounts with minecraft, right now.

It's a friggin' pattern with them.

I don't mind that one since it means more security for my account and the stolen alt account market can finally die off.

But rest in peace anyone who bought their own alts, gonna have to make a lot of different Microsoft accounts...

MS isn't going to pay them that much unless they see a good investment there. They will monetize it and make that money back. As for discord being free that may change down the road will depend on what their plans are for the platform.

Also while you can download it for free. Discord still generates incoming from other area's.

Imagine them folding Discord into the Xbox group instead of Skype. Using the bones of Discord to build out a Steam competitor with chat, game integration, etc, with your games combined with a store. Then slide streaming tech in beside the current Discord offering of "stream to your friends."

Windows Games Store 3.0.

"Welcome to the new Discord. Same as before except now with all the games you love! Featuring Game Pass."

I wish they'd leave Discord alone, but I'm imagining Google or Amazon buying Discord. There seem to be no good options.

MakaveliAs for discord being free
I actually wonder how much money they make from the Nitro subscriptions and the server boosts compared to their expenses.

I don't think its enough as they were looking for a buyer in 2018 and have been considering an IPO. So for this story I believe its Discord that approached MS and not the other way around.

Every Online business that Microsoft has purchased through out the years has been turned to rubish or shut down. They only purchase to gain the monopoly.

I know people are talking Skype integration here, but... that's the wrong synergy IMO.

If Microsoft had any brains, they'd integrate XBox Live with Discord. All of those XBox chat-rooms, XBox-friend lists, screen-sharing, etc. etc. synergizes with Discord more so than anything else Microsoft owns.

The Discord community does not mesh well with the business (Skype/Teams) community. On the other hand, gamers are the obvious synergy. Stream your Minecraft session over XBox into your Discord server. That sort of thing would benefit both Discord and XBox far more than Microsoft accounts or whatever.

Makes sense. Discord's mods will easily integrate in Microsoft's corporate culture.

Discord went to crap the moment they started to ban groups and people for political reasons.

Microshaft will only put more nails into the coffin.!

If you can't innovate, just buy the innovators. That's the modern Microsoft.

Indeed it is, whilst the early Microshaft simply copied their competitors products.

Don't worry Discord Lovers, they'll give it at least as much care and feeding as they gave Mixer.
