Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios Celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Mortal Kombat

Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios are proudly celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Mortal Kombat, the billion-dollar franchise that has sold more than 79 million videogame units since the original arcade game launch on Oct. 8, 1992. Over the past 30 years, the renowned Mortal Kombat series has been a fixture in popular culture, exciting fans with best-in-class gameplay, iconic characters, and an immersive cinematic experience, while also earning numerous accolades, including multiple wins at the D.I.C.E. Awards from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, The Game Awards, and many others. The latest entry in the videogame series, Mortal Kombat 11, has been the fastest selling title in franchise history with more than 15 million units sold worldwide, while Mortal Kombat Mobile has amassed more than 150 million downloads to date.

To honor 30 years of Mortal Kombat history, a new video has been released showcasing the franchise's cultural prominence across three decades of entertainment, from videogames, to movies, to animation. Bringing together moments from the original Mortal Kombat game (1992) to Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate (2020) and the first live action Mortal Kombat film (1995) to the reimagined Mortal Kombat movie (2021), the commemorative video spans 30 years of bone-crushing content, along with a visual spotlight of legendary Mortal Kombat fighters and their different iterations from past to present, such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Jackson "Jax" Briggs, Baraka, and Shang Tsung. Furthermore, new artwork celebrating the Mortal Kombat 30th Anniversary was unveiled today highlighting some of the game modes, story moments, characters, and finishing moves from the game's history, all depicted in the shape of the iconic dragon logo. The Mortal Kombat 30th Anniversary video and artwork can be found on MortalKombat.com, which has been redesigned and updated for this momentous occasion.
As part of the anniversary, Klassic Movie Raiden will arrive in Mortal Kombat Mobile beginning Oct. 7 through Oct. 11, featuring actor Christopher Lambert's character likeness and voice from the 1995 film. Players can also log in every day from Oct. 7-14 to collect free anniversary gifts and enjoy a host of new in-game content. Additionally, Mortal Kombat (2021 film), Mortal Kombat (1995 film), Mortal Kombat: Legacy (2013 web series), and Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms (2021 animated film) are available to watch now on HBO Max, while Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm (1996 animated series) is available now for purchase on digital platforms.

Prima.VeraAlso MK3 was the best game from all their history. Everything after was and is just junk focused on useless gore and unrealistic moves.
You're not wrong, but most of them were fun with their "easy to play, hard to master" approach and same screen PvP fights.
Kind of the same way rock music in the '80s was fun, even though every song was about drugs, sex, rock 'n' roll or a combination of these.

I liked nearly every MK game from the PS2 era and before (MK3, MK4, Deception, Armageddon, Shaolin Monks). Newer ones overcomplicated things, and the new generation of characters just never felt right.

Their gameplay never stacked up to Capcom and SNK fighters though. It was always the game for edge lords and people who were bad at fighting games. I enjoyed them, but gameplay was never their strong point.

They were stupidly fun which is the point! But they took no real skill and lacked the depth that the competition had. Their move to 3D was interesting but again there were better 3d games. Their reboot in the PS3 was well done and the reason they were more complicated was specifically because they wanted to be taken seriously, though by MK11 they'd botched that again.

They took no skill to have fun, but they took a lot of skill if you wanted to master the combos, which was kind of the point. Or at least in some of the games. Fatality moves in MK4 were ridiculously difficult.

Nah, they didn't. Not compared to their competition.

I find it funny they never once mention the Annihilation movie which has been and always will be panned as one of the worst movies ever, at least in the MK franchise. They literally act like this thing never happend....shhhhh don't talk about it sorta thing lol
