No GeForce 9800 GX2 at CeBIT 2008

Some last minute news from the informer VR-Zone. According to this information, NVIDIA has canceled the GeForce 9800 GX2 introduction during CeBIT 2008. All NVIDIA partners are ordered not to show the new card during the German computer show. The official launch date is set for March 11th and partners will receive the reference cards about a week before this date, meaning that working samples will already be available during CeBIT, but none of them will show its power.

They must have felt all of them together would heat up the whole area.

Its only bad of Nvidia cause people waiting for it might just buy the x2 or htey might end up buying an 8800 Ultra. Could be they are waiting for the ultra's stock to clear up.

I don't know, I mean wasn't this supposed to the successor of the Ultra? If they do back down on the G92 version what will they do for a new G92 Ultra?

Possible and prabable reasons:

1. The card isn't fast enough since Nvidia isn't so good with making SLi drivers much less SLi on one card. Plus Nvidia is still stuck with GDDR3 wich doesn't lend any improvement.

2. Heat! I mean come on! We all know how hot g92 chips run, and to sandwich two in one package should really be a burner!

3. I'm sure power consumption is crazy as well. Nvidia really needs a 55 or 45nm chip.

9800GTX(Ultra?) - par or better performance(likely) of the Ultra, cooler and quieter(maybe) with less power consumption(we'll see).
They are pretty closed vest on their top ends right now, so no one REALLY knows. Shouldn't be too much longer 'till the leaks start coming out.

Its a piece of crap because the 7950gx2 was a piece of crap,a bodged 2 card as one effort that did'nt work then and wont work now.

There is no differant cooler you can put on it,so if it runs hot all you can do is have a fan blowing on it.As far as i'm concerned they can keep it.

how do you link the 7950GX2 to this? That was very much an interim before the GeForce 8 and this card will be one of the flagship GeForce 9 cards. Oh Applying that logic, the ATI Rage Fury Maxx (ATi's first attempt at dual GPU cards) was an utter fiasco, they did come up with an excellent HD3870 X2 in due course, didn't they?

I actually like the design the GX2, I just think Nvidia would be having a better time with it if the chips were smaller and cooler.

I hope so. Nothing spurs progress better than a little competition. Nvidia would certainly have me fooled if this was the case. :)

Something tells me, the 8800 Ultra stocks are indeed going dry but not so with the 8800 GTX. I won't be surprised with a price-cut, enough to make people rush in to buy three units each for you know what.

so why consider this a 9xxx series when its just two 8xxx chips configured as two cards in sli? surely a 9xxx card would be a 9xxx core,same as a 8xxx card has a 8xxx core.

The 7950 GX2 was a piece of crap? Tell that to the guy who got over 14,000 in 3DMark06 with said video card (check the ORB). Can any Radeon X1900 series card match that? Not bloody likely.

I'm guessing nVidia is just trying to clear as much "old" 8800 series stock as possible before they release this monster and kill off the 8800 GTX and Ultra for good.

That's a nice score, but I thinkwhat he meant by crap was the poor design and poor driver support for the card.

Yeah I dont like the naming of the cards either. It should be called 8900GX2 and nothing else. Its not a generation 9 chip, so why call it that. Well of course, if ATI can call a 2x00 card for 3x00, Nvidia must think its free to call its cards whatever they want??? As I said, I dont like it.

OT: I think the performance isnt up to par, or drivers or heat issues. I dont think this is a PR trick.
