Folding@Home Project Comes to NVIDIA

After ATI joined the F@H team almost a year ago, the time for NVIDIA to follow up has finally come. There will be a Folding@Home NVIDIA GPU client out soon, the company confirmed today.
Yes, it's finally coming - the NVIDIA GPU client we have all wanted since first seeing and tasting the power of the ATI GPU Folding@Home client
Mr. Vijay Pande, the man behind the Folding@Home project said. NVIDIA also showed the new NVIDIA GPU client running a live demo on "next generation GeForce graphics card". Head on over at PC Prospective to find out more on the story.

this is where nvidia will never be able to snatch the crown from ati.. the new 4870's.. even if they might end up sucking at graphics.. will be able to deliver 1 teraflop or power.. the only card to do so..

still a good move by nvidia though, it shows that they care

@pancho not true entirely...the new 4xxx series wont be supported at first....with every gen change they need to remake the client to support it and looking at how long it took them with ATI its not going to be anytime soon at all...i wouldnt hold your breath for support for the 4 series till at the least 3-4 months after the fact....same goes for nvidia though after it comes out supporting the 9 series unless they include the 99xx seiries with it it will be a long time.

its when you use the processing power of a cpu, gpu, or a ps3 to analyze things about proteins, these analyses help scientists learn about proteins, and help fight cancer!

And you think the next gen of nVidia cards isn't going to deliver 1TFLOPS or close to it? The next-gen nVidia cards might only have half the shaders as ATi's cards, but ATi's shaders are only running at 1GHz, nVidia should be able to double that, giving pretty close to equal FLOPS.

That has pretty much been exactly what has happened already. NVidia's current cards have less than half the shaders of ATi, but they run those shaders at more than double the speed, giving FLOPS performance that is similar.

hmm but you dont see nvidia trying to shoot down ati's claims of over 1 tflops.. and im sure they'd let people know about that if they could achieve that with their newer cards, and not let ati have all of the glory for the time being..

in short: i dont think nvidia will be reaching 1 tflops, and btw the new ati cards have unlinked shaders, allowing you to clock up the shaders

Red bar is a HD3870. If the HD4870 is around 1.5x the perf or hd3870, it still wont come close.

i dont know if the 3870 really does destroy a ps3.. but something tells me theres something not right about that graph...

and ps3's account for the most tflops to the f@h..

They already said 1.5 TFlop when they first announced the card. When it was still called G100.

Caring about the whole Teraflop theoritical is pretty useless. What matters more is how it will really perform.:laugh:

USB 2.0 has a higher theoritical bandwidth than Firewire, but look at how Firewire still has faster transfer rates. Look more at benchmarks of what it does in action rather than what it could do theoritically.;)

With better software its possible. ;)

Remember Tesla? Its probably built with the same framework as Tesla because Tesla is used for floating point calculations aswell. :)

They must be using the lowest Snaileron D. Or a low end Sempron.:laugh: j/k

yeah, I defi call bs on that nVidia graph - sure, ATI's GPUs might not be able to compare as far as rendering power goes, but ATI's GPUs are much better suited for mathematical work than nVidia's are, and were a big reason why ATI GPUs trashed nVidia's during the first physics processing bout.

I wouldn't be surprised if the older 1900 series of cards could keep pace with the newer G92s when it comes to F@H work unit processing. Both of my 1950 PROs folding together could keep output pace with this quad CPU - sure, the clients are majorly different, but my older P4 was outclassed by just one of my 1950 PROs. I have yet to run these 3870s . . .




Still, it's nice to see nVidia finally hopping on board here, also - I'm curious if SLI setups will be supported at first, also.

i'm thinking BS on the graph wait i know they used the same drivers they used to improve performance on crysis! its 2x as fast but gets 1/2 the work done :nutkick:

i swear first person to call me a fanboy i own 3x as many NV cards as ATi cards and i used one for years until i switched to the better price to performance 3850s

it would be awseom if nvidia pitched in and made it so seperate ppu's could fold...sli 9600's and my physx card hell have my e6400 do it at the same time!!! man my primary rig would be a folding machine! :cool:

I wish that Ati card would stomp nvidias card but lets face it, ppl are expecting this new 4870 to absolutely kill the gtx260 and gtx280, but I think with a higher bandwidth on gddr3 Nvidia will still have the raw power. I'm not a real fanboy of nvidia or ati, but there is going to be alot of cons to both those cards too.

well they cant show a graph like that without some kind of proof.

To all the people saying 'ATI is better at this stuff' oh really, you have a G200? these are a new card, it IS possible that they are better than ATI at folding.
