In a move comparable to that of Bill Gates and Brin & Page disconnecting themselves from micro-managing the companies they co-founded; Jeff Bezos announced stepping down as CEO of Amazon. He has handed over reins of the company to Andy Jassy, who heads Amazon Web Services (AWS). He "leaves" Amazon as a corporate colossus, valued at $1.6 trillion. Bezos will remain as the Executive Chair of Amazon. He stated that he will remain "engaged in important Amazon initiatives." One of these is the Bezos Earth Fund, the aerospace company Blue Origin, and give more attention to "The Washington Post," which Amazon owns. In this regard, Bezos's retirement from the CEO's chair looks like a cross between the lives of Bill Gates and Elon Musk.

Wow really, hope that was tongue in cheek o_O

Never heard of either.

CEO's aren't important. They think they are. A company is known for its actions and products. If its known for its CEOs something went very wrong. And it actually is, Bezos = Amazon and that filthy bald head is just like Zuckerbergs eternal drool-face, both horrible to look at. You can just see they're worried about one thing only, themselves. Their media-look is so strong they can't let it go anymore.

CEO's aren't important.
Well they were founders of Google much earlier than being CEOs, much like Gates, not to mention the internet era as it's today is in large parts due to the likes of Google. Heck I'd argue without Google there'd be nothing like the inter-webs that we browse & no memes :slap:

Of course it also depends on age, for instance I don't recall the founder(s) of Motorola, AMD, Micron, Nintendo et al. There's a recency bias in here & with age you tend to not follow "all of tech" as you used to back in the day. Which is not to say that you're old but yeah even I haven't followed tech as religiously post 2010 as I used to :p

Pff the only difference would be that we would be searching through BING on IE6 and generally being lost as a result :D

Internet and the world was doing just fine without Google.

This is an interesting one, but I don't entirely agree. Recency bias... I just straight up don't care about business individuals. Strong businesses generally don't thrive on the best ideas but on strategical considerations/choices. Its not really development of anything but business. Why would I care? Its the same with market driven developments... are those really up to CEOs and their incredible insight? I beg to differ. You also see this in how products get made. Somehow, at some point many different people in many different places figure out similar things. History is full of examples, even before the internet.

This is also why I say I don't think the world would look much different with or without Google. Or Facebook even - social media existed before it and will exist without it. Or Apple - the smartphone was a broadly carried idea that was going to be developed further with or without Jobs. Is that 'hindsight'... nah, I literally said as much when I had my first Nokia in hand. Look at all those patent trolls and buyouts. These people aren't all that brilliant, they're just very close to what the market needs at a specific point in time, and they have the means to move in that direction. Good businessmen. Not the inventors many often make them out to be. They just know ahead of others what the next iteration of an idea should look like.

Even with regards to the Operating System and Gates and Jobs in the early days... almost every decision was motivated by the market. Were they strong minds, sure! But there were many like them and still are but they didn't manage to catapult to the highest office.

Amazon. A website that sells books on the internet? Stupid idea. That will never work. Much less morph into a market dominating server juggernaut like AWS that constitutes well over half the company's operating income.

BaldyBezo moves on....glad to see this, but my 1st question is will he follow in his predecessor's (and ex-wife's) foot steps and start donating at least some of his vast wealth to charities, human/social service orgs, and the like ?

I have my doubts.... but I guess miracles can & do happen.... sometimes

Why?
Why do people expect the wealthy to give away what they earned?

Being "wealthy" is one thing, being absurdly filthy stinkin rich is another..

For the latter, after living off the backs of others for sooo long, they should consider using some of their moolah to do something good for the rest of the world, you know like giving something back...

That's why :D
