Declines continued for the traditional PC market as global shipments totaled 74.3 million units during the third quarter of 2022 (3Q22), according to preliminary results from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. Cooling demand and uneven supply have contributed to a year-over-year contraction of 15.0%. However, shipment volumes remain well above pre-pandemic levels when PC volumes were largely driven by commercial refreshes due to the looming end of support for Windows 7.

"Consumer demand has remained muted though promotional activity from the likes of Apple and other players has helped soften the fall and reduce channel inventory by a couple weeks across the board," said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC's Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers. "Supply has also reacted to the new lows by reducing orders with Apple being the only exception as their third quarter supply increased to make up for lost orders stemming from the lockdowns in China during the second quarter."

"In addition to shipment volumes, we'll be keeping a close eye on how average selling prices (ASPs) trend this quarter," added Linn Huang, research vice president, Devices & Displays at IDC. "Shortages over the last several years have aggressively driven product mix shifts towards the premium end. This, coupled with cost increases of components and logistics, drove ASPs up five quarters in a row to $910 in 1Q22, the highest since 2004. However, with demand slowing, promotions in full swing, and orders being cut, the ASP climb was reversed in 2Q22. Another quarter of ASP declines indicates a market in retreat."

Not surprised, we're WAY past the phase of having to upgrade every generation.

Hi,
Cell phone generation wipe and wash another every two years
Sadly all the ultra thin laptops are about as reliable as cell phones so 2-3 years it's toasted.

Nah, MacBooks last longer than that.

Lockdowns were a huge disruption economically and socially. I went by a strip mall in a good location yesterday that was once full maybe 5 years ago, and now it’s well over half vacant. There aren’t as many small businesses left. We’re in uncharted territory in modern economic times. Free money and limited options begat free spending, which helped drive inflation. Prices have increased way faster than wages, so now we can’t buy as many luxuries.

Tech is going to be in a crater for a while, especially since for most things, it’s going to take significant increases in cost and energy consumption to get more performance over what you already have. Apple is in the strongest position, IMO. They have been going the other way on energy use, which not only can make their options more appealing to a consumer, but much cheaper to produce and make a profit on. Remote work really helped drive platform agnostic workplaces.

It is the greed of the companies and the stupidity of the Apologists that has caused this problem of decline sales. I've been b!tching about this for years... Ever since they started promoted bling bling on computer cases and rgb this and rgb that to the point that you have to use more fans to cool an average case than one built 10 or so years ago.

As stated before I swear by the Corsair Carbide 400R and 500R style of cases to the point of having brand new cases in storage for my next builds.
As stated before my performance numbers on my higher end computer running with only fans and a Hyper T2 air cooler.

This is all tech industries fault for pricing themselves and people out of the Desk Top market.

Demand for PCs have been waning during pre-COVID days. 2.5 years after COVID lockdowns and unnatural surge in demand, they really cannot expect the momentum to continue can they? Furthermore, with very high inflation on basic necessities, there is no reason for people to want to buy PCs unless there is a strong reason for them to do so. Also, there is a real risk of recession in the coming few quarters with Europe likely already in a recession, and people are losing jobs. I won't be surprised that PC demand will continue to weaken. So no matter how powerful these next gen CPUs or GPUs are, I don't think we will see them flying off the shelves.
