Sony has showed off some new accessories for the Playstation 5 during the PlayStation Showcase event and the most interesting one goes under the internal development name of Project Q. The device is pretty much a dual sense wireless controller that has been split in half and each half has been strapped to either side of an 8-inch HD display. Sony didn't go into much in terms of technical details, beyond that Project Q will have built in WiFi for streaming games from the PS5. The display will support 1920 x 1080 resolution at 60 Hz, which is most likely not what most potential buyers were hoping for.

Sony also showed off a pair of new PS5 branded earbuds, which the company says will be compatible not only with the PS5, but also PCs and other mobile devices, courtesy of Bluetooth 5.3 multipoint support. Sony is also promising some new type of wireless technology here which the company claims will deliver lossless audio that is said to deliver outstanding sound quality and low latency audio. Sony didn't reveal when either device will be available, but promised to release more details "soon".

[Editor's note: Updated with a snippet from the official press release below]

In addition to highlighting its robust software roadmap, SIE also announced Project Q, a dedicated device launching later this year that enables you to play any compatible game installed on your PS5 console using Remote Play over Wi-Fi. With a vibrant 8-inch LCD screen capable of up to 1080p resolution at 60 FPS, the device delivers crisp visuals and smooth gameplay streamed from your PS5 when you're away from your TV. All of the buttons and features of the DualSense wireless controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, are featured on the device.

seems strange that this would not be OLED 1080p 120hz. i mean its streaming, so its no like they have to spend money elsewhere like a steam deck.

sony doesn't get it anymore... they got it a lot time ago, was the first in the market with vita OLED handheld. sad that system didn't get the love it deserved.

Well, they didn't reveal any info about the display beyond the size and it being "HD", so it could still be OLED and high refresh rate.

I assumed being a lower resolution it would lack the rest, but you are right, it is not impossible. That would be pretty cool honestly. I for one love gaming on my Steam Deck in bed before I fall asleep, so relaxing.

I don't think the PS5 at the moment encodes 1080p 120Hz, nor HDR.

Regardless, this is an accessory and it should be cheap. No one is going to buy this for 200€ when a Switch Lite can be had for 190€ or less during promotions.

This is probably 120€ or so, and if that's the case having a 1080p 60Hz IPS screen is just good enough to keep the costs down.

If it was OLED they'd definitely have mentioned it.

A HD screen doesn't sound too impressive, as that implies 1280 x 720 or possibly 1280 x 800 resolution, rather than Full HD which is 1920 x 1080.
HD has been the term used for 1080p for a while now. Even Youtube stopped showing 720p as "HD" a few years ago.

It's most definitely 1080p60 because that's one of the output and streming options on the PS5. There's also no reason whatsoever to have a 16:10 screen in there, as the PS5's output is 16:9.

Says who? They just did a very short teaser as you can see in the video and they mention zero specs outside of the display size.

It's a 1080p 60 Hz display according to the press release that I couldn't access at the time of writing the article, which has been updated to reflect this.

Looks meh.
Yeah, possibly. Keep in mind that we're looking at renders here.

Says the fact that claiming you have an OLED panel is an important selling point nowadays.

But I don't like the concept at all. Portable device that's independent from the console would be a much better option. Might as well just release a grip for your phone and an Android app for PS5 Remote Play instead of spending millions on funding R&D.

Maybe they just took a phone from the Xperia division and strapped a big display onto it and then added the controller halves?

Except that you're missing the part where this wasn't an announcement, just a teaser.

I doubt, this will cost at least $250-350

I'm quite underwhelmed. I was hoping for a PlayStation Portable successor; running on one of AMD's portable chips and offering the ability to take your games on the go (pause at home, load up the portable on the go, and resume gaming there and not be entirely reliant on internet access aside from cloud saves or actual online-only games) as well as download or install older games and play them on the go; basically a "PSN Deck" able to play the full catalogue from PS1 to PS5 onwards, provided one owns them or is a Premium subscriber.
