Does anyone here overclock their video cards? Is it really worth it?

I have a asus tuf oc 4080 super card. I was going to flash the bios on this card with a bios from another card to get more out of it.

But then multiple people on the internet said you are going to push power through vrms that were not meant to handle it from a card whose bios and hardware vrms were meant to handle it.

And they told me in the end you would get like 3 fps more. Is that worth it to you. And the premature hardware failure you may get?

I wanted to do it then thought freak that. 3fps is completely not worth it.

Do you guys overclock your video card? How much gain do you get on your cards? FPS wise?

Thanks.

I haven't OC my cards since my GTX 980 Ti. iirc I got a few more fps but not much.

damn honestly? no. Not anymore. I do it when I first get them, just to see how far they go. Thats it though. I stopped years ago.

Overlocking was so much different when I was growing up with PCs though, they might as well have put chains on me. Architectures are also getting very strict and limiting in regards to gains.

So that probably sets some kind of cognative bias in me. Its a lot like being at the top of the mountain, you cant be at the bottom anymore. The gains are so negligible (to me) from what I learned with, that its not even worth my time to pursue it.

Thats me being completely open.

Cards since Pascal (GTX 10 series) and newer (roughly) - Undervolt. Most of these cards are already pushed to near the limit of their silicon, not much to be gained in outright performance, maybe a few %, 10% if you're very lucky or willing to go fairly hard on cooling and power consumption, but there are energy savings to be had and heat generation to be minimized by tuning the cards to their sweetspot.

Older than that (again, roughly) - overclock. I have a bunch of older video cards and gains usually range from 10% to 25%+ depending on the model and example.

Undervolting is pretty much the thing of modern chips to get anything left out of them. The safest way also.

I pretty much stopped after the 9 series. Once Nvidia added a bunch of lock outs, it just wasn't fun anymore. Plus the benefits where quite limited without hard mods.

I constantly run an OC on mine, but I'm also running water cooling for it. My gaming load max temp is usually the mid sixties Celsius. I gain ~10 fps on average (depends on title whether more or less).

Same here, I run a 6950XT on water with heavy OC profiles for gaming and then steep undervolt/underclock profiles for very light desktop usage or just web browsing. Keeping temps in check is definitely key and the gains are pretty good imo.

I overclock my laptop 3050 lol. I get an extra 7% or so from the OC, which is enough to play Elden Ring at a steady 60fps on high. But honestly, I probably wouldn't notice if I forgot to turn it on. I also do benchmarking sometimes, with a much more aggressive OC that nets me... 14%. And isn't remotely stable.

Yeah, overclocking nowadays is mostly for fun, just seeing what you can do and learning about your PC components. Undervolting can be nice though as you get some peace of mind from the lower temperatures.

If I was getting 20fps I could see the need for an extra 10 fps. But since I get 120fps at 4k. I just don't need that. Water coooling too?

I am getting old. When I was in my twenties I gave a shit. I am just tired and simply do not give a rats ass anymore. Life sure did beat me up.

I wanna go back to 1990. And do shit differently. When I leave this earth, I am not coming back for at least a million years. I need to rest in the stars for a long while.

I'm a tinkerer, so I'm terrible at leaving anything stock. Picking up 10+ fps with RT on high and ultra settings is significant to me. I enjoy building it and getting the results that make a difference. I can see the difference.

I remember buying a Intel Pentium 3 cpu at 500mhz. I overclocked it the day I got it to 700mhz and played unreal tournament all night long. I actually even won a match. Which now I wouldn't even be on the highlights screen.
It was fun back when hardware had significant gains to them from overclocking. But if it's fun for you then do it! I am Mr. Stock build now.

Undervolt only. I have an RTX3080 FE, but it is throtling and loud on stock settings (1050mv) so is use it on 850mv to get better performance and it is much cooler.

You should overclock and undervolt your 4080S, no FPS loss and save over 50W power consumption, the fans will run much quieter too.

For example your 4080S should run at 2775mhz at 1.05V stock, overclock by 210mhz and cap the voltage at .95V so that your 4080S will run at 2775mhz with 0.95V

i don't think now OCing would give you much advantage over the stock one since manufacture now give you less headroom

pre 2013 .... it was better to buy the AIB cards ram etc as they provide a better overclock and good cooling heatpipes and fans... than the founder editions
but with the introduction of gpu boost on the graphic cards aib cooling solution seemed more attractive and has a slight increase in price...
fast foward to today you get barely any difference with FE and AIB cards apart from the cooling ... take asus strix for example.. over here in korea the price difference is around $350 usd...
the gpu boost clock is so high now any small overclock will probably get you 1-3fps... thus it is better to undervolt and lower the power and temperature of the gpu
then let the gpu boost overclock automatically to gain fps...

overclocking GPUs is the only thing left over in these days.
Ryzen is basically 99% maxed out at stock, Intel is not even stable out of the box, RAM is not worth the many hours and a second SSD with an OS you can destroy and reinstall just for 2% more performance when you're heavily CPU bound.
But my 4070 Super is faster than a 4070 Ti just by moving three sliders a couple pixels wide on my monitor. (~12% OC)

Dunno what my 6700 XT OC compares to?
