Small info for fellow x79 users:

You all know that Intel had to make a chipset revision because of 6G problems and it seems 10 years later the problem shows it's head:
about two weeks ago, one of the disks connected to Intel 6G port started disconnecting randomly.
I've disabled Intel SATA controller and used ASMedia 1061 for 6G connectivity.

About a week ago I've started getting "Machine exception check" BSOD (when lucky) when scanning hardware.
System worked completely normally until I scanned for hardware changes or tried to install new drivers for anything - from GPU to G13 keyboard.
So I've swapped from 1680V2 to 2667V2 and no change. Then to 3930k - same deal ...
Then I tested RAM sticks one by one, then PSU, GPU, completely disassembling the board, washing it, new pads, etc...
After days of hair pulling I tried to search for a new motherboard, but, OMG, people around here are asking 200 euros for x79 MB :)

Anyway, as last desperate thing, I've disconnected disks and voila - everything worked! Then I connected them to 3G ports and again - everything worked!
So it looks like external 6G SATA controller isn't connected by PCIe bus but somehow goes through Intel 6G controller and if that one fails, external will cause problems as well.

Hope it helps someone to save their hairline ...

Very unlikely. Not because of the CPU, but because ASUS does not support RDIMMs on their consumer line of boards.
4gb is work but 8gb or 16 or 32
I didn't see anyone who did the test or managed it, I saw Asrock x79 that worked with 16GB sticks, but no one asus

update for asmedia usb 3.0 ASM1042 xHCI controler, instaled on asus rampage IV extreme, fixes bug such as PC crashing after leaving standby
When updating here I realized that I was using a USB flash drive from 2011, this one is from 2013, this update is outside the BIOS, even though the BIOS is the latest from 2014, the USB firmware has not been updated since it left the factory in 2011, full of bugs.

After updating and restarting the PC, wait about 2 minutes as USB devices will work. It took this long to detect the mouse after updating firmware

I found this site, there are others which one you think is best to use on the site, it seems that the last version is this one for the HP ASM104x v1.5.2.7 FW131025-10-11-AB, will it work correctly on the Asus Rampage IV?

I'm afraid of installing this and my USB 3.0 won't work anymore hehe is there any chance of this happening using this HP firmware or not?

Who updates to this from HP on the Asus Rampage IV Extreme, please report if it was good
@USASXII @Aquinus what do you think?

Running my 1680V2 at 4488 stable. I had to tone down from 4501. My chip needs alot of vcore. I'm using 1.475v with 180% LLC.

Wow yeah welcome to the thread but that cpu is definitely hungry for voltage!
However temps seem quite low for whatever stress test you ran, are you on water for cooling?

I actually got one myself few years ago. Was just too lazy to ever bother disassembling mobo and put it back just for a water block lol

I'm using a H110i with 4 140mm fans. under full avx load it does up to 72c. But when my rtx 3080 suprim starts blowing 420watts it can go +10c I'm currently looking to upgrade from X79, I've been using it since 2012. I had a 3820, 3930k and since 2021 the 1680v2.

Nice setup. Yeah ditto been on X79 since 2012 lol. Currently on Frankenstein expanded AIO but last I fired it up overheated quickly so pump is shit or rads/hoses are clogged from months of sitting since my last long usage.

Just bought a thermalright phantom spirit after seeing great review here on TPU for it. Just have to install it. However I have a water cooled 7900 xtx I got cheap so hopefully I can get at least main part of loop working for that lol. So yeah, probably last time I’ll tinker/upgrade X79 and I have most of a 1700 system in parts ready to build once my X79 craps out.

Just a short update:

I've replaced 6700XT with 6800XT few weeks ago and 1680V2@4.4 is able to saturate that GPU to about 2300 - 2350 MHz (at 1440p). After that, GPU is waiting on CPU.
Helldivers 2 is running on max settings and no upscaling at about 105-110 fps on ship, 80 - 95 on ground with max drop on helldive difficulty (with bunch of bots and explosions) into mid 60.

With MPT voltage lock at 1V, this GPU draws 200W at 2.3 GHz while gaming, 260 during Timespy, lock at 0,95V and 2.2GHz, it's about 180W during gaming and 240W on TS.
Apex legends on max and FPS lock on 140 draws about 110W and GPU operates on 1,7GHz - 30W lower than 6700XT! Without FPS lock it's about 280 - 290 FPS.

So, this CPU is still very, very capable and if you are wondering about GPU upgrade - 6800XT in max for a balanced system (at 1440p).

My main X79 rig went poof last night. The first time in 12 years since I built it. I'll do an autopsy on it later this afternoon to see what can be saved from it. I have plenty of parts on hand to revive it and this time it's getting Win 10 Enterprise LTSC IoT as the operating system.
