I have no idea what is causing your exact problem :\

I can recommend trying the "StarCraft II - Repair" option under : Start Menu -> All Programs -> Starcraft II -> StarCraft II - Repair

Cant be sure it will help - but its the best I can think of.

Most of the places I know of say you should install the game ALREADY connected to the net to get the update at install, as this works best.

If you cant get any other help - try a total uninstall, and re-install whilst already connected to internet so installer can do the automatic update straight off the bat?

So far I cannot find any "offline" patch downloads, such as where available for previous Blizzard games.

You can't really play effectively offline. A lot of data is saved to the server, so make sure to do manual saves which stick to the hard drive.

it doesn't say anything in the manual about how and where to play a A.I. game. Ive beat the tutorial

I think there's something on the right hand side in the singleplayer menu. If not just goto multiplayer, create custom game. select a map, and add an AI.

The sad thing is these days even to game in single player mode it still requires an internet connection. For example if you play Battlefield Bad Company 2 it will need to authorise the serial to their online server to make sure its a genuine copy, it does this after the initial installation. Also if you fail to patch the game you are locked out of single player campaign too, so you'd need a good internet connection if you want those 1 GB+ patches.

Bottom line is, dialup is not enough these days, even for singe player and expect large and frequent patches especially for RTS's because they will be balancing the units all the time i.e. nurfing the OP units or increasing the HP of the weaker units so these patches can be quite frequent.

Afaik, the maps are all hosted online for single player A.I. and multiplayer, so it seems that unless you're connecting to their servers and download the maps, you can't play vs A.I.
Blizzard really screwed this one up big time, as the other problem is their stupid region system. Live in the wrong part of the world and you can play with mates in other countries... bleh...
