i also use XFX but i have a MSI reference one. Went with it at 1050 mhz for gpu and 1250 mhz for memory with 1.3v and it was stable. i want a higher clocked one like HIS or Sapphire !

Hello everyone.
To all of you flashing bioses on your 6870's I have a problem with mine.
I bought a pair of Sapphire HD 6870 (not the reference ones) and no matter how I try, when I flash their bios, even with slight clock modifications my windows will BSOD right after loading the ATI drivers.

My final try was with this mod: clocks 970/1150
voltage 1.187 (up from 1.175) and a slight change on the fans curve.
The flashing went fine (I had to previously unlock the bios) but still, booting into windows brought me a BSOD with atikmdag.sys

Anyone having this issues?
Do I have to reinstall windows for them to work properly?

What do you mean non reference ? Do you have the toxic one because you said you tried to flash a bios at 970 / 1150 mhz and that are the clocks for Sapphire TOXIC 6870.

I have a MSI reference 6870 (900 / 1050) and i flashed it with XFX (940 / 1150) and it works perfect with no BSOD.

If you have the TOxic version of BIOS please provide it so i can try it and give you a feedback.

by non reference y mean that it has a custom cooler because sapphire has a reference card with the amd cooler and all the others.
Thats all. My clocks and voltage settings are default.
This is my card, you see.. it has a custom cooler AND blue PCB but all the specs are reference, 900 Mhz GPU, 1050 Mhz memory and 1.175 max voltage.

What I tried to achieve and failed miserably was to OC the clocks, then to OC the clocks with more voltage (changed the 3D register only to 1.187) and finaly to do the former plus changing the fan curve.
Then I tried the fan curve alone, the clocks alone (again), all BSOD.

I had previously uninstalled and erased (driverseweeper Safe Mode) all AMD display drivers... of course.
The cards would bot to windows as standard VGA cards but as soon as I put on the drivers... F.......KI:banghead:NG BSOD !!!

Yes meran I did that. It is the only way to use the cards with this windows install.
Perhaps If I reinstall it will take on the changes to the bios but right now I need the machine so I can't waste any time doing that.

Maybe on the weekend...

so basically what you're saying is that I can't flash this cards at all? Not even to change the fan curves?

I'm posting this just to clarify that changing the fan's curve is not possible either on the Sapphire HD 6870 cards.
The catalyst drivers just won't see the settings (even though GPUz tells me that the flashing was properly done) and the fans will stay at 22% all the time -that is the initial value for the original bios of the card.
Which tells me that AMD is putting some sort of failsafe on to the drivers that prevent them from properly loading a card with a moded bios.

yes, i also do not recomend that. i use msi afterburner with saved profile and when booting into windows it turns the fans up to 33-40 %. Flashing with modded bios won't help you achieve any fan modifications. i am looking only for a higher clocked bios like his turbo X or sapphire toxic to flash only for the frequencies.
