Dear community,

Far from expert regarding Hardware problems I want to address the following question.

Starting yesterday while playing Fallout New Vegas I encountered a number of system crashes and various graphical "anomalies". (two to three weeks before everything went fine).

As I'm using the second 8800 Ultra OC - the first one had similar problems during the guarantee phase - I tried the ATITool and today the Furmark-tool to discover any problems.
Both tools crashed after seconds, causing the computer to restart.

Today I managed to get some output from the ATItool - a photography is attached, as print screen or else didn't work.

The error message states: Delta of 6717742 in 52736 pixels (127.38 avg). Nor errors for ...
Giving me a real bad feeling regarding the graphics card. The yellow artifacts don't make that feeling better. Additionally I encounter blue dots and lines from time to time (the last time after the bios screen).

My last hope is that the driver update last week got something to do with it but I'm prepared to pay my local dealer a visit.

Thank you very much for any help! Please let me know if any additional information would be helpful.

Best regards
Rochus

It sounds like your card is finally biting the bullet. Artifacts during boot wouldn't be caused by a driver issue, more than likely it is the memory on the card going bad.

As for a card to replace it, that depends on what kind of deals you can get in your area. Not knowing that, I can just give suggestions based on what is good deals here in the states. The GTX460 is still a very solid card, and with the release of the GTX560, the prices on the GTX460 have dropped significantly. This is still one of the best bangs for the buck available. The GTX470 is also still a very respectable card, and again with the GTX500 cards out, it has dropped in price to offer an exceptional bang for the buck as well.

Looks like we got a maaaaaan down. Might be time for that upgrade. As stated above a good deal on a GTX460 or if you can swing it a 560Ti would be a great upgrade for a reasonable price. On the AMD side a 6950 will do a great job as well but I wouldn't expect brand new versions to be unlock-able. Either it's not a terrible time to do it since prices are fairly reasonable at the moment.

Any good recipes in the forum?

I read about the baking-option but I don't have an oven with air circulation (if that's the correct term). It's upper and lower heat only. Before baking the fan must be removed, right?

Yes, disassemble everything that you can, make 4 small little balls out of aluminum foil, place them in each corner of the video card on a cookie sheet with the GPU processor pointing up toward the top of the oven. Be sure to pre-heat the oven to about 375 degrees F and place the cookie sheet in the oven and bake for NO longer than 8 minutes.

Once you take the card out, leave it sitting on the sheet for around an hour or so depending on ambient temp and then reassemble the video card and try it out.

I had a very similar issue with a 8800GTX video card a couple of years ago and did the baking trick and it is still running to this day in a pals personal computer:rockout:
