does anyone know anything useful? googling yielded some "clamwin" antivirus (you can conclude how good it is from the name) so after some 20 minutes i gave up, all the results are at least 2 years old. so, if anyone still runs a win98 rig, help would be appreciated.

btw i forgot to add it should be free, only scanning and sanitizing will do.

No idea about free ones. And if you say that you don't need real time protection then why don't you just use free bootable live cds with all needed antivirus scanners such as dr.web, norman, malwarebytes, avg, kaspersky etc

Sorry, but I have to ask this: why are you running Win98 nowadays anyway? It's been dead and buried for years, so I'm not surprised that there's no support for it.

Perhaps Kaspersky's free online scanner will work with it?

hm, it never occured to me to try a bootable cd with a scanner :banghead:, i'll try that, there is nod32 installed but it would seem that the viruses are too recent for it to recognize.

it's my dad's really old laptop he uses for work, he needs windows98 because of some apps uses won't run even on xp... and no he can't be bothered to get some new technology because he designs and assembles devices for custom applications he works on (he designed and built systems that trigger public danger alarms as in case of fire and stuff that can be radio and phone triggered this year) + he's a bit too stubborn. i don't have much knowledge of his work (microcontrolers, ham stations n stuff) so i can't say there's something newer that he could work with he doesn't know about so i have to deal with the 98 here.

thanks for the replies guys! :toast:

No, you really can't.

Clamwin is designed for windows scanning from a usb drive. The definition files are very well maintained (update every two days at most), and the scanning is surprisingly accurate. Because all of this is designed to run from a portable drive, the program has a tiny footprint.

The only real drawback is that there is no real time system scanning. As you have said this was not an issue, you should be good to go. Judging a program based upon name is foolish. Who would think that handbrake would be encoding software, let alone good encoding software...

You can try Avast! Home Edition 4.8.1368.

I believe this was the most recent version that supported Win98; and, as far as I know they were still supporting definition updates for it. I don't know if they still do.

And, it seems these are the last versions of Avira AntiVir Personal 7.00.03.02 and AVG Free Edition 7.5.524 to support Win98. Don't know if they still update definitions for them.

Clamwin is about all there is left and it is solid... it has been around a long time.
You can use Clam Sentinel for real time scanning (it is a add-on and you still use Clamwin), although it will eat up some resources, as, it sits your tray and monitors file changes, certain devices that are plugged, etc..

Goodluck on your search.:)

Avast! v4 is your best bet, AVG 7.5 is no longer updated. Which is a shame, as it was the last version of AVG I had any respect for.
