Asia is set to get its very own edition of the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), from 2015. CEA, the organizers of the International CES, announced that the inaugural CES Asia expo will be held between May 25 and May 27, 2015. Shanghai, China, will be the seat of this event, with the event being hosted at the Shanghai New International Expo Center (SNIEC.) The event is a partnership between CEA and Shanghai-based event organizer Intex Shanghai.

Industry experts don't see this as CEA's attempt to compete with Computex, a PC industry-centric expo held each June in Taipei. CES, in its typical early January annual edition held in Las Vegas, USA, sees one of the consumer electronics industry's biggest gatherings, with manufacturers of not just PC hardware, but also home entertainment, automobile electronics, digital photography, mobiles and tablets, among others; meet, to show off their latest. CES Asia could serve as an important platform for China's emerging global brands in the consumer electronics industry, and make it easier for brands from across Asia to converge at a more convenient location than the US.

"We are thrilled to announce the launch of CES Asia," said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of CEA, said as part of the announcement. "China is a critical driver of the global tech industry with an incredible opportunity to accelerate its innovation output. At CES Asia, attendees will experience the innovation that defines the CE industry, with exclusive access to some of the top brands from China and around the world," he added.

What does the entry of CES Asia mean to the PC hardware industry? We predict, not much. The original stateside January show and the new May show in China, will cater to two different markets. PC hardware vendors tend to be comfortable showing off their cutting-edge ware to markets that are most receptive of that. Computex is different, as its primary goal is to bring investors and distributors closer to major Taiwan-based manufacturers and OEMs.

CES Asia could, however, be enticing for the smartphone and tablet enthusiast crowd, even if it trails Mobile World Congress Barcelona by a couple of months each year. The emergence of some very compelling smartphone and tablet brands by Chinese manufacturers indicate a strengthening engineering muscle, which could draw some audience eastwards.
