The board offers two ways to cool the cpu in windows. You can use the die temps or the package temps.

If you select package temps the cooling will work far harder all of the time. In windows this is not necessary.
If your gaming on the other hand, it is wise to set the fans to full power before starting the game. Otherwise you will hit 98degrees plus.
This has caused my pc to shut down once. Since then I have lowered the cpu usage in windows to 99%.
Both this and the fans running at full speed kept the package around 60degrees.

So watch your package temps when using this board as this could of been the reason the first 4 or 5 BIOS updates still burnt cpus.

I'm using a 7800X3D.

I'm interested to hear of others experience using this board with the latest BIOS 1705.

I think you meant to say latest BIOS 1905. Actually, just checked and a new BIOS just released on 4/18 BIOS 2007. Either way, my fans run at 900RPM fixed, regardless of temp. Gaming the game that uses my CPU the most is The Last of Us Part 1 and I see about 65-68ºc package temps. RDR2 for example I see about 50ºc but it barely uses my CPU.

Running CB23 I get up to 79ºc package temps. My specs are to the left.

You should have zero trouble cooling a 7800X3D under any conditions with a U12A though, at any reasonable fan speed? In any case 7800X3D Tjmax is 89C, unless you have a major issue with cooling it shouldn't go anywhere near 90C, let alone 98C.

Exploding CPUs were due to grossly overvolting VSOC in combination with frailties of bad CPU samples. Ryzens have always done a good job of protecting themselves temp-wise.

crap I totally missed that he said 98 degrees, Yeah, no reason for it to go that high unless there is an issue with the cooler, etc.

I'm using FanControl(Prime X670E-Pro) with two separate curves, one for Tctl/Tdie and one for Tdie, I find package temp sensor that's on the board unreliable. TCtl/Tdie curve will start ramping up fans when it reaches 70C, Tdie starts at 60C.
I never seen my 7800X3D with D15S go above 75C even when running OCCT, when gaming usually it goes to 70C when fans are at 20%(350rpm). I monitor all my temps 24/7 on the second monitor.

Cheers.

I think there is some general misunderstandings here - plus the use of arbitrary numbers that really are anecdotal.

Sadly, and we see it ALL THE TIME :( is the critical importance of case cooling (along with ambient or room cooling) is completely over looked, ignored, or worse, not even considered.

I agree with tabascosauz who said,
You should have zero trouble cooling a 7800X3D under any conditions with a U12A
Only I will change that to "any quality air cooler" (appropriate for the CPU) and add, "in a properly cooled case".

Also frequently forgotten or ignored is the fact that there are several heat sensitive components in a computer case that can, when overheated, create stability issues and cause a computer to shutdown. It doesn't have to be, and often isn't the CPU.

I should of taken print screens. This happened when I forgot to set the fans to full power during Horison:Forbidden West... A PlayStation port, could be high CPU usage in this game as the board did not seem to have this issue with other games.
Thankyou for the posts. I'll take a little more time and post a screen shot of the temps with the fans at full. Then with them set to normal. The set up is built to a very high standard. I usually video myself applying the paste etc and the build in general.
Again thanks for the input.
Heres a screen shot of my system a idle in windows and gaming. With the fans running there was no problem with the system package temps.
If I leave the fans to do their own thing, I do not get enough cooling on the package and it goes to 98degrees.
Not sure if the software is picking up my clocks properly as it states I have been hitting 8.256GHz in game... ???

are you sure it was 98ºc though? It would throttle before that. Regardless of a port or not shouldn't get that high.

Pretty sure as the results were in the red. But now I'm looking at my results,

and the max core speed must of been reporting false values as its at 8.256GHz....

Anyone else seeing this with HWMonitor...?

Just had a quick google and it looks like HWMonitor is reporting the speeds incorrectly.

Right now idling Task Manager says im idling @4ghz
HWMonitor says its @4.148GHz
Armoury Crate says its @4.150GHz
I think the average clocks reported by Task Manager are the safest bet as far as reported clocks go.

That and the internet reports that HWMonitor is reporting false values...

I'll check my temps and core speed tomorrow night using Task Manager.

i get the occasional wrong clocks reported with HW monitor, but not with HWINFO.

You should keep it in your tool box. No HW monitor is perfect and they all do things slightly differently. For sure, HWiNFO64 is the one I use and turn too most. But I also check with Belarc, CPU-z, GPU-z, HWMonitor, and Speccy too - if for no other reason than to verify if HWiNFO64 is correct.

I note if HWiNFO64 and one of the other monitors both report something is wrong, that either confirms something is wrong, or it tells me the sensor they are checking is bad. And since those sensors are extremely low-tech, low precision, super-cheap devices (chump change for 100s of them), they can and often be faulty, reporting a problem when none exists.
