Hey all!

Like the title says.
I now have a 2070, with the latest drivers installed.
In 2 weeks from now im going to upgrade to a 4070ti super.
So should i then, first use DDU to uninstall the current drivers, then remove the 2070, then place the 4070, and then download and install the new drivers again?

Or is it safe to just remove the 2070, and then place the new 4070 ti super, and that it will work out of the box without problems?

Thanks in advance!

To avoid possible issues, I'd do that and just install the latest driver.

Use DDU. The drivers are not the same for a 2070 and 4070ti super, even though they may be the same version number.

It's the same file for any Nvidia GPU, don't matter if it's an RTX 2070 or RTX 4090 !

Nvidia's website even recommends using DDU when changing your graphics card even if both cards are nvidia's.

You probably mean in the nvidia forums.

Thank you! Definitely will do!

And my brother is also happy, cause he gets my 2070. And he comes from an nvidia 660 :) So the upgrade for him is even better!

Nvidia's staff on the forums also recommend it. It's been like that for at least a few years now. On my previous PC, I went from 1050ti to 1070, I went on their forum and they responded to me saying I should use DDU when changing my card. If it was all generic, there would be no need to put the model of card in the search box if your not using auto driver updates.

That is a night and day upgrade for your brother :rockout:also for you from a 2070 to a 4070S Ti, pretty damn big upgrade, to answer your original question, why in the hell would you not take 10 minutes when you have spent $600-$700 on a new GPU just to nuke your drivers and reinstall them? it's a similar question to those who ask I just bought a new $1k GPU, should I still use my crappy 5yr old 600w PSU? OK, it's not an apples to apples comparison but you get my point, why ask the question in the first place? do you not have the time in your life to DDU drivers and do a clean install after spending considerable amount on a new GPU? just do it

Sure, but only if your having problems.

The driver file you download is the same file for all current Nvidia GPU's that are in the support list, it don't matter what card you have.

Some people have systems that have two or more GPU's in them and get detected from the one single install file and even after you have run the installer and you shut down system and change out or add another Nvidia GPU the system will detect it and use the current drivers you installed for it.

DDU has an option that says "shut down cause I'm changing graphics cards" I'd pick that option, then it shuts down, put in new GPU, unplug internet, have latest Nvidia drivers installed on USB, install, reboot. plugin internet, everything should be good to go after that.

I'm not reading whole thread, just my two cents. nap time for me. fare well

Also after you download DDU and nvidia drivers I'd recommend disconnecting your system from the internet so windows doesn't try to force whatever driver they have.

Yes, unless you want the DirextX 12.2 support vs DirectX 12.1 with Nvidia's own drivers.

Yes, unless you want the DirextX 12.2 support vs DirectX 12.1 with Nvidia's own drivers.

This isn't exactly dependent on drivers... it's a hardware thing. The only recent NVIDIA DX12 devices that don't support 12.2/Ultimate are the GTX 16 series. Anything older is a stretch calling DX12-class, although they technically are

Its not tonight honestly lol. 2 weeks of waiting and saving money still lol :)
But me and my brother looking forward to it very much!

Aye, yes indeed. For both of us!
But ofcourse im willing to spend 10 minutes extra. But if it wasnt needed, then i wouldnt do it ofcourse. But i see now obviously that its better to do it everytime. So, with my next upgrade im gonna do it as well, and i also gonna encourage my brother to do it obviously :)

And btw, my brother is gonna use his 600w psu, together with his cpu and mobo that he got of me earlier.
He now is gonna run his ryzen 7 1800x, 32gb ddr4 3200mhz ram, and my 2070 together with a 600w psu, that is a year old. I think its a corsair one, but not sure about it.
Still though, that should be fine for that setup.

And speaking of upgrades. He came from an fx 8350 (which also was my old cpu years back) and go'd to that 1800x (which was my previous cpu).
And he go'd from 12gb ddr 3, to that 32gb ddr4, on top of that upcoming gpu upgrade.

Me however, moved from that 1800x to my current 5800x3d.
Why not an am5 cpu? Simply because the price difference. Even if i moved to the 7800x3d, instead of the 7950x3d which a friend of mine has, i needed to pay 500-600 euro extra to get an am5 mobo, the cpu itself and the ddr5 ram.

So i thought to move over to the best there is to offer currently on the am4 platform. Still a heck of an upgrade if you ask me though :D

Ah, yes, i remember that from when i switched my soundcard. It was there indeed, so indeed, going for that option then. Thanks again!
But why switch of internet btw. Even while not having drivers isntalled, windows should work not with the new gpu placed in the system?

And then i can safely go to the nvidia website to download the drivers. Or maybe i could download the drivers beforehand, and place it on an ssd/hdd, and then install it.

Or.. Is there a possibillity of windows not working without the drivers while my new gpu is installed in the case of the system?

Thanks in advance!

Still though, it might be better i think to spend that additional 10 minutes. Better safe then sorry not?

Ah, yes, i remember that from when i switched my soundcard. It was there indeed, so indeed, going for that option then. Thanks again!
But why switch of internet btw. Even while not having drivers isntalled, windows should work not with the new gpu placed in the system?

And then i can safely go to the nvidia website to download the drivers. Or maybe i could download the drivers beforehand, and place it on an ssd/hdd, and then install it.

Or.. Is there a possibillity of windows not working without the drivers while my new gpu is installed in the case of the system?

Thanks in advance!

Microsoft has a bad habit of auto installing drivers even when you're trying to install the latest ones. and they don't usually install the latest ones, so you have to do it all over again.

This isn't exactly dependent on drivers... it's a hardware thing. The only recent NVIDIA DX12 devices that don't support 12.2/Ultimate are the GTX 16 series. Anything older is a stretch calling DX12-class, although they technically are
I think it's only for RTX / NVIDIA Quadro RTX GPU's with ref to Nvidia.

Quadro RTX is basically the Turing-generation enterprise cards, they retired the Quadro branding with Ampere onwards, but yes, it's anything RTX, 20 30 or 40 series. The older GTX branding was retired too and no further GPUs are planned.
