R9 380 high temperature and GPU core at idle

Hi everyone,

I just bought a Powercolor PCS+ r9 380 4GB graphics card and I noticed that on idle my GPU temperature is at 64-65C and GPU core is at 755MHz. The fan runs at around 39%. The GPU core never goes below that. I'm running a single 1080p 60Hz monitor.

Any idea how I can lower the GPU core at idle?

Thanks!

Hi welcome to TPU,

check your background tasks, most likely a program (could be a virus, trojan, mining program) is running, that's why your GPU isn't idling correctly. Use a anti virus program. Good luck.

If it doesn't seem to be another background task, program or app causing it, do a clean reinstall of drivers.

Thanks guys, I scanned my computer and didn't find any virus/malware/etc. I also reinstalled my drivers and it's still the same.
HWMonitor shows Graphics clock is at 755MHz and Memory clock is 1475MHz while GPU is at 0%

I attached a screenshot below.

in advanced power options in the control panel set link state power management to moderate power savings. if its on off right now there is a chance it could be it.

Are you using msi afterburner ? Sometime it starts up and auto is switched off causing the cards fan to stay @40% speed which then overheats
Does the fan speed change on load and idle?

The minimal my card goes is 40% fan speed

Not sure how to do it in Ati control center ,but try change the Power Management mode to Adaptive on the global settings

Thanks xfia. It was set to moderate power savings. I set it to OFF and also to MAXIMUM POWER SAVINGS but it didn't really change anything on any state. Idle core clock stayed at 755MHz

Thanks cdawall. I had to google how to do that :D I'm not sure what state ulps should be. On RegEdit it was originally set to 0 so I changed it to 1 and restarted my computer. Same thing. I changed it back to 0 and still the same.

Sorry for spamming guys I'm not sure how Multi-Quote works. :(

Thanks SnakeDoctor. I am using msi afterburner but only to monitor the fan speed, temperature, etc. Fan speed is set to Auto and it goes up to around 65% when on load. It stays at around 39% on idle.

Edit: I tried looking for Power Management mode in AMD Catalyst but I can't find something similar.

Use Process Explore (has gpu monitoring) and see what is using the Gpu on idle .
Must be some process utilizing it

I remember Razor synapse hogging the gpu on idle on desktop running hot , had to create profile add the .exe and adjust to adaptive performance.

Thanks cdawall. I had to google how to do that :D I'm not sure what state ulps should be. On RegEdit it was originally set to 0 so I changed it to 1 and restarted my computer. Same thing. I changed it back to 0 and still the same.

Can also turn off ULPS in msi afterburner settings\general

Thanks! I'll download Process Explore when I get home tonight. I"ll try to turn off ULPS in afterburner too. Thank you.

I used DDU to uninstall the drivers. Should I uninstall the drivers first and then run DDU?
Yes. :) Also, AMD profiles are stored in AppData>Local and Roaming folders. Check those and delete anything AMD.

Run gpuz and check gpu load in second tab, should be around zero when idle. And don't mind the jumping, it will do that because of anything you have open on your desktop.
Basically it should report zero every other moment.
You can use cpuz and realtemp to check cpu speed and temps, are those idling correctly?
If you open the ccc drivers and go to performance/amd overdrive you can enable that and leave everything at default. Maybe your card doesn't idle correctly so worth a try.
Does your card reach the correct speeds when running a game or benchmark?
Does the card behave the same in windows safe mode?

So if everything says your at zero activity for the gpu, it could be your cards bios is faulty or configured that way since it's in that where the powerstates are defined.

On a side note, some animation or video could be causing this, even when closed, maybe something that starts with windows and keeping the gpu in the wrong state?
