Servers, NAS, SAN, Fiber Switches Anyone?

Hey guys,

I just got ~12 Servers with a SAN and a NAS plus the RACK. Most of the Servers are filled with 74.5GB 10k drives.

Anyone know what I should do with them?

My local school IT dept got a grant for new hardware so they were tossing this stuff and asked me if I wanted it. I said sure, I was thinking I would only get like 4 Servers but they threw all this stuff at me. Most servers are either Dual Xeons or Dual PIIIs. I believe at least one has 128GB of RAM.

The 1-U version of the 2950. Had to maintain so many of those while working in the labs. Old ass machines that's for sure.

I pretty much had experiences with every single server you have haha. Most of them were being pulled from the racks and being recycled

Look like some iSCSI drives too in that HP DL something or other. (EDIT: First gen DL380)

I had help. The HP DL380s are G3s. Most of the servers have Server 2k3 licenses on them. The SAN is relatively newish. I almost had a Dell PowerEdge 2800 but they held that one back.

Yeah, Ill go from my router, to a Fiber switch to another Fiber switch to my PC. Even though my PC is 2 feet from my router.

That's assuming you can get those speeds though from ISP. Im talking like a full blown in house private internet setup.

Because even if you go off your router, your still limited to your ISP.

If it has a lot of storage, just build a NAS/ftp/fileserver out of all of the best parts. Send the rest of the parts to a recycling center.

I selected all the working machines. Each of the HP Proliant DL380s has 8 74.5GB 10kRPM drives in it. At least one has 128GB of RAM. Some have Fiber addons.

Then there is the HP StorageWorks hsv 100. That is loaded with drives too. Plus I have the controller for it as well.

Im thinking of selling the servers for $100/server. The SAN, Im not sure of.

We are talking like ~$90 starting. These are HEAVY fully loaded. Hell, we had to 2-man-carry the SAN parts.

Honestly i wouldnt keep anything except maybe the SAN and the Fibre Channel with it. The rest of the servers i would sell or recycle.

id only keep the SAN because storage is cool and fast but you cant get those drives anymore and its loud as shit.

Well, I need to turn most of them on one by one and re-scramble the drives since a couple were file servers. The SAN is missing 7 of these custom proprietary cables that are like $100 a cable. Unless you guys know where I can get them on the cheap.

I need to give one or two to my school per my agreement with my Highschool I got these from. Gov't grants are awesome. They wanted me to take the 2 huge HP Plotters too but my little Ranger was filled to the max so they tossed them.

Altogether I had ~1200+ lbs in the back of my ford ranger.........very little bounce left in the springs at that point. I drove 45 miles at 35MPH. ^_^

If you haven't given them away/thrown them out already get the servers running on a bare OS and have a look at some of the @home projects, can't hurt to be helping mankind doing some number crunching while you decide what to do with them.

sorry guys, my college gobbled them all up. Those suckers were heavy. They generally required a two-man carry.
