I had enough parts laying around the house that I was able to finally upgrade my venerable JellyFin/backup server PC last weekend. Originally built in 2012 as my main PC, it was relegated to my secondary machine in 2018 when it was replaced by the original incarnation of my Ryzen machine.

Sporting all original components apart from a replaced PSU and additional HDDs, this PC has been chugging along near faultlessly for the last 12 years. Ivy Bridge was no joke!

In fact, half of it does live on, including the case, fans, PSU, and storage (including the original 840 Pro).

I’ve replaced the guts of it though. The original i5 3570k, P8Z77-M PRO mobo, and 4x4GB DDR3 Vengeance memory has been replaced with a R7 3700X, B550M Steel Legend mobo, with 2x8GB DDR4 Predator memory. I had to add a Quadro K1200 card as unlike the 3570k, the 3700X has no video.

Yes, this setup is complete overkill for its purpose, which is essentially a file server, but these parts may as well be put to good use nonetheless, and I intend for this system to be in place for a long time.

I had an AM4 adapter for the Noctua NH-U9B SE2 which would have been nice to bring over, but the blasted thing was about 2mm off. Try as I might, I just couldn’t get it to fit. Luckily, I had a stock AMD cooler kicking around, so I just used that instead. CPU usage will be low most of the time, so it should do the job just fine.

Full specs:
  • AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
  • ASRock B550M Steel Legend
  • Nvidia Quadro K1200
  • 2x8GB DDR4 Predator KHX3200C16D4
  • Samsung 840 Pro 256GB
  • Western Digital 8TB WD Blue WD80EAZZ x 2
  • Fractal Design Define Mini + original 2 120mm stock fans
  • be quiet! Pure Power 11 500W
Anyway, here’s some pics.

After taking the old equipment out and removing the CPU cooler, this is the first time I've seen this little beauty of a CPU in 12 years:

I like your new addition, very nice.

I had recently moved my plex server on to better hardware, too. It was slightly newer than what you were running, but not by much. I moved on from a i5-4460 to a 5600X3D. I also use the server to host the occasional game my brother and I play and the 4460 just wasn't cutting it for hosting those games. Overall it was a bit of an overkill, but I always wanted to play around with a 3DX CPU and now I can.

I found that moving from 4TB spin drives (plus an 8TB spin drive for backup) to 4TB SSDs was another great improvement for my server. The spin drives worked just fine for housing all the videos/movies/shows, but with the SSDs everything is very snappy. I just keep all the spin drives for backups now.
