Hi,

Sorry to ask a question for my first post! But this place seems like the only place with a hope of knowing the answer to this.

I knowingly took a gamble on an "RX580 8GB" on eBay which the seller said he bought as working but with no output via HDMI, but that he had problems installing the AMD Drivers in Windows to was giving up and selling. Anyway I got this card for £35 delivered so it was worth a go on the assumption it had some kind of mining firmware on it I could replace.

I haven't tried HDMI but under Linux (my primary OS) the card seems to work just fine (but maybe a bit slower than expected) so I am pretty happy to leave things as they are, even though under Windows I have the same problem as the seller with an "error 43" in device manager after installing the drivers. However if I can flash a firmware and get things properly working then I'll do that.

What I know:
* The firmware on the card is https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/255349/255349 (not my upload but it matches) which has oddly low clock speeds and smells like mining to me
* The output from the flashing tool under linux is:
Code:
sam@sam-desktop:~/Downloads$ sudo ./amdvbflash4-104E -rsa 580.rom
AMDVBFLASH version 4.104 EXTERNAL, Copyright (c) 2022 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.

The result of RSA signature verify is PASS. Older ASIC.
sam@sam-desktop:~/Downloads$ sudo ./amdvbflash4-104E -biosfileinfo 580.rom
AMDVBFLASH version 4.104 EXTERNAL, Copyright (c) 2022 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.

    Product Name is : D00033 588S A1 GDDR5 256Mx32 8GB 300e/300m
    Device ID is : 6FDF
    Bios Version : 015.050.002.001.000000
    Bios P/N is : 113-XXX-XXX
    Bios SSID : 0B31
    Bios SVID : 1002
    Bios Date is : 06/03/20 13:13
* The card has a sticker saying it's a "STRIX-RX580-2048SP-8G-GAMING" with a serial number I can't get to work on the Asus website and that card should have three fans as best I can tell?
* In GPU-Z TMUs shows as 128 which should be 144 for a 580 right?
* I've attached photos of the card and GPU-Z output, ignore the missing fan, one of the blades was broken on delivery but I've got some new ones on the way from china that seem to match...

Any idea what I'm dealing with or what firmware I could potentially flash?

Many thanks

Thanks I didn't realise an 8GB 2048 existed but that makes sense. However any idea about why the AMD drivers under windows might fail to work with it?

Ok thanks. This is a completely clean driver installation and the same problem has happened for me and the seller. The reason I assumed a BIOS issue might be to blame is threads like this: https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/radeon-rx470-mining-version-error-43.291574/

I might just use the card as-is under linux and get on with my day.

Ok I've changed my mind. The clocks are definitely not right. Higher than normal memory and lower core clock. Benchmarks aren't lining up with what a 2048SP should be doing either. I'm going firmware hunting...

It looks you have bought frankenstein card. Asus puts the brand on the PCB itself, it dont see the brand on the PCB.
Can you remove the cooler and make a decent picture of the PCB so we can try to locate a working bios?

Thanks I appreciate the help from someone with an idea of what they are doing!

Yes I suspect it might not be genuine Asus...the appearance most closely match some no-name cards on AliExpress. I did try to get the cooler off, but unfortunately one of the screws holding the heatsink on has rounded out, it looks like a previous owner might have removed it before me and it is right next to some delicate components so if I can avoid using my dremel and risk damage I would prefer that option.

I have found a number of BIOSes that seem to match the details spat out of the various software I've used:

Is it a reasonably good bet that one of these will work? I notice that the power limits seem to differ between them but otherwise they appear roughly the same.

Can you see the part numbers on the memory? Is it Samsung K4G80325FB or K4G80325FC

Unfortunately not without getting the cooler off. There are thermal pads on everything. However the firmware that seems to match mine (linked in the first post) seems to indicate B.

If I get this wrong, would it likely leave me with an unrecoverable card? I don't completely understand what the recovery process would be (if it's even possible).

The problem is, the error 43. That can have multiple reasons like modified or wrong bios and hardware failure.

Some bioses which might work on your card based on the current information:

Thanks. I’ll try and flash it tomorrow and see what happens! It sounds like if I do have issues, it’s usually enough to put the card in a machine with integrated graphics and flash it back to the firmware I started with (which I’ve backed up!).

If I somehow do manage to kill the card, it’s not cost me a fortune so it’s a gamble I’m taking knowingly.

Oh well I give up. I tried both vBIOS images you suggested, the 570 wouldn't flash due to an SSID mismatch, the 580 one POSTed but then wouldn't boot the OS. I also tried a whole bunch of other vaguely matching images I found, only one of which booted properly but with ever more poor performance. The card is still an upgrade for my son's machine from the HD7850 he's got right now and seems stable even if things are clearly a bit wonky. It'll do!

You can flash the 570 bios if you used the flash guide:

Flash instructions:
For RX 500 Series (Polaris) and Older:

Get amdvbflash 2.93

https://www.techpowerup.com/download/ati-atiflash/

Then look for Version 4.68, underneath 4.68 you will see a link to show older version, click that and you should see version 2.93

Follow these steps carefully:

1. Open your "C:" drive in Windows, create a new folder, call it atiflash.

2. Extract the contents of atiflash_293.zip to the "C:\atiflash" folder

3. Find the bios file you downloaded and rename the bios file to 5 digits with .rom on end Example RX 580, change file to rx580.rom (r****.rom)

4. Move r****.rom to the "C:\atiflash" folder

5. Open the start menu, type cmd, when cmd.exe appears right click it and hit "Run as administrator"

6. At the command prompt type in cd\ and press enter until only C:\> is on the screen.

7. Type in cd/atiflash and press enter, you should see C:\atiflash>

8. Type in amdvbflash.exe -i to identify the gpu you want to flash with a 0, 1, or 2)

9. At the C:\atiflash> prompt type in
amdvbflash.exe -unlockrom 0
(there is a space between the e and -unlockrom and 0)(0 is the number zero)
press enter and you will be prompted that the "ROM Unlocked" (or 1, 2)

10. At the C:\atiflash> prompt type in
amdvbflash.exe -f -p 0 r****.rom
(there is a space between the .exe and -f, and a space between -f and -p and 0).
(Or 1, 2)

Press Enter

Follow directions on screen and if flash is successful exit the command prompt and restart, windows should show up on screen
