Does the control panel service (NVDisplay.ContainerLS) need to be enabled to make use of G-SYNC?

I don't know about its service, but you do need to enable G-SYNC (or G-SYNC compatibility) in the NVCP.

isn't it enabled by default with supported hardware?
Never had G-SYNC proper so I can't answer on that, but G-SYNC compatible is finicky. Some monitors are said compatible by their manufacturers but aren't listed by NV itself. Even those listed by both may sometimes not work great with G-SYNC compatibility turned on.
I for sure had to enable manually both when I used an MSI MAG241C (once listed by MSI as compatible) and now with my Aorus CV27Q (also formerly listed by Gigabyte as compatible). Never had issues with them.

In my experience, when a compatible display is connected, there is a prompt in the notification area that says to enable G-Sync Support in the NVCP.

Depends on the monitor. My Acer Predator is hardware based and requires DisplayPort and a NVIDIA card (HDMI isn't supported). G-Sync Compatible monitors do it by software and that's all I know about that.

I'm new to adaptive-sync monitors and I just bought my first one recently, so I'm interested in the subject. If you can't get yours to work, double check if your monitor is being detected as G-Sync Compatible on the NVCP. It may not work because of a bug in the driver or Nvidia's laziness in their certification program. I purchased an LG UltraGear 27GN65R, which has an NVIDIA G-Sync sticker in the front, claims to be certified on LG's website and it is very specifically on the G-Sync Compatible list in NVIDIA's website, making that claim true, I guess.

1690578465732.png

Even though it is supposed to be fully supported beginning with driver 456.38, as of the 536.67 driver, the NVCP states that my display has not been validated for G-Sync compatible and thus sets G-Sync to off by default. In these cases you need to tick the checkbox above this warning to have the driver force-enable G-Sync or it won't work.

Simply doing this has enabled variable refresh rate for me, so I'm not too bothered. Another thing to check for is if your monitor is in Enhanced adaptive-sync mode instead of Basic, if this is available. It is on mine.

Next thing I would look at is if you have a quality DisplayPort cable that can handle the required bandwidth, as LG shipped my monitor with an HDMI cord and I always gamed on TVs before, I did not have any DisplayPort cable around so I've purchased this very high quality 28 AWG Club3D CAC-2068 VESA Certified cable - it's not the cheapest of cables but that can certainly eliminate another variable when dealing with something like this. I bought mine off Amazon, if it's available in the Brazilian Amazon you can probably find it on the American one too or maybe your regional one if you're not from the US.

Good luck!

G-sync compatible is not the best thing to use with G-sync. those are labeled with only G-Sync monitors.

I had to enable mine via Nvidias control panel with a dedicated GSYNC Acer XB271HU bmiprz. The display OSD had it enabled by default but wasn't detected by nvcp

NVCP just has one option: Enable G-SYNC, G-SYNC compatible. So just turn it on whatever the sticker on the monitor may be (and whatever the manufacturer says their product supports).
If necessary, check the Enable settings for the selected display model if for whatever reason NVCP says the monitor is not validated.

well, i dont buy random monitors, either they are G-sync or not. i dont spend money on a compatible model nor freesync.

And yet, you still misunderstood. You may get G-SYNC Ultimate, the option at NVCP will be the very same.

I'm aware of the difference between monitors with a module and those without, but this monitor is still on the certified list yet the driver doesn't recognize it as such. That's what I am saying ;)

If you have a real gsync monitor you just have to activate it at control panel and it's gonna work no matter if you use v-sync or not. It always uses 1 or 2 frames over what you selected in the game.
I've got a gsync alienware monitor aw2521H, it even has 300hz I never use, It's my first gsync monitor, I always wanted to try one because it fixes even games that with a normal monitor I had to tinker nvidia inspector not to have stuttering, for example Devil Within, even having 60fps always, that game has bad frame pathing, I think the second game too, but with the magic of gsync It goes totally fluid without having to use nvidia inspector ^^. I was very lucky I could buy when it was on a sale for 350€ or so, now people sell it for way more than 400€, It is a very rare monitor being 25', 1080p gsync and what gamers like better is those 300hz... I use 144 but I wouldn't care to use just 120 hz.

So, what if i enabled that option in the panel then disabled the services and everything? Would it still have G-SYNC?

You have the monitor and know how to disable the service, so why not test it out yourself?
FWIW g-sync will work without NVDisplay.Container, but killing the process does not bring any measurable increase in performance.
Good luck :)

I suspect yes, try it, I don't have a G-Sync monitor
