While NVIDIA has launched high-end GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 GPUs from its Ada Lovelace family, middle and lower-end products are brewing to satisfy the entire consumer market. Today, according to the kopite7kimi, a well-known leaker, we have potential information about the configuration of the upcoming GeForce RTX 4060 Ti graphics card. Featuring 4352 FP32 CUDA cores, the GPU is powered by an AD106-350-A1 die. On the die, there is 32 MB of L2 cache. To pair, it has 8 GB of GDDR6 18 Gbps memory, which should be enough to power games at 1440p resolution, which this card is aiming for.

The design of the cards reference PG190 PCB is supposedly very short, making it ideal for ITX-sized designs we could see from NVIDIA's AIB partners. Interestingly, with a TDP of 220 Watts, the reference card is powered by the infamous 16-pin 12VHPWR connector, capable of supplying 600 Watts of power. This choice of connector is unclear; however, it could be NVIDIA's push to standardize its usage across all products in the Ada Lovelace family stack. While the card should not need the full potential of the connector, it signals that the company could only be using this type of connector for all of its future designs.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 16 GB Laptop SKU Spotted in Next-Gen HP Omen 17 Laptop

According to the well-known hardware leaker @momomo_us, HP is preparing the launch of its next-generation Omen 17 gaming laptops. And with a new generation of chips coming to consumers, HP accidentally made some information about laptop SKUs public. Four models are listed, and they represent a combination of Intel's 13th-generation Raptor Lake mobile processors with NVIDIA's Ada Lovelace RTX 40 series graphics cards for the mobile/laptop sector. The four SKUs are: CM2007NQ/CM2005NQ with Core i7-13700HX & RTX 4060 8 GB; CM2001NQ with Core i7-13700HX & RTX 4070 8 GB; CK2007NQ/CK2004NQ with Core i7-13700HX & RTX 4080 12 GB; CK2001NQ with Core i7-13700HX & RTX 4090 16 GB.

The most exciting find here is the appearance of the xx90 series in the mobile/laptop form factor, which has not been the case before. The GeForce RTX 4090 laptop edition is supposedly equipped with 16 GB of VRAM, and the GPU SKU should be a cut-down version of AD102 GPU adjusted for power and clock constraints so it can run within a reasonable TDP. With NVIDIA seemingly giving its clients an RTX 4090 SKU option, we have to wait and see what the CUDA core counts are and how clocks scale in a more restricted laptop environment.

NVIDIA 4nm AD104 "Ada" Silicon Pictured, Half the Die-area of AD102

Here's the first picture of the 4 nm "AD104" silicon powering what would have been the $900 GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB, and upcoming RTX 4070-series graphics cards. The third largest GPU based on the "Ada Lovelace" graphics architecture, the AD104 looks tiny. This is because it has roughly half the die-area of the AD102, estimated to be around 295 mm² (compared to 608 mm² of the AD102), which means its transistor count should be less than half, with older reports pinpointing it to 35.8 billion. The RTX 4080 12 GB was supposed to max out the AD104 silicon, enabling all 60 streaming multiprocessors (SM) physically present.

The AD104 with 60 SM hence has 7,680 CUDA cores, 60 RT cores, 240 Tensor cores, 240 TMUs, and 80 ROPs. NVIDIA has generationally narrowed the memory interface (compared to the GA104 and TU104), down to 192-bit GDDR6X. Its predecessors such as the GA104 feature 256-bit wide memory interfaces. NVIDIA is overcoming the memory bus width "deficit" by giving SKUs based on the silicon higher memory speeds (21 Gbps or more); and architecture-level improvements such as larger on-die caches. NVIDIA Plans GeForce RTX 4060 Launch for Summer 2023, Performance Rivaling RTX 3070

NVIDIA is reportedly planning to ramp its GeForce "Ada" generation into the high-volume performance segment by Summer 2023, with the introduction of the GeForce RTX 4060. The card is expected to launch somewhere around June, 2023. The card will be based on the 4 nm "AD106" silicon, the 4th chip based on the "Ada Lovelace" graphics architecture. Wolstame. a reliable source with NVIDIA leaks as Lenovo's Legion gaming desktop product manager, predicts that the RTX 4060 performance could end up matching that of the current RTX 3070 at a lower price-point.

This should make it a reasonably fast graphics card for 1440p AAA gaming with high-ultra settings, and ray tracing thrown in. What's interesting is if NVIDIA is expected to extend the DLSS 3 frame-generation feature to even this segment of graphics cards, which means a near-100% frame rate uplift can be had. Other predictions include a board power expected to be in the range of 150-180 W, and a 10% generational price-increase, which would mean that the RTX 4060 would have a launch-price similar to that of the RTX 3060 Ti (USD $399).

NVIDIA cancelled the RTX 4080 12 GB as it heaped bad press due to its specs being significantly different from those of the RTX 4080 16 GB, making this the only SKU with the name RTX 4080.

The GeForce RTX 4080 is based on the 4 nm "AD103" silicon, and armed with 9,728 CUDA cores across 76 streaming multiprocessors. It gets 304 4th generation Tensor cores, and 76 RT cores, besides 112 ROPs. Although it has generationally more memory at 16 GB, its memory bus is narrower at 256-bit GDDR6X. NVIDIA attempted to compensate for this with use of faster 22.4 Gbps-rated memory, and architectural improvements such as larger caches on the silicon, to speed up the memory sub-system. NVIDIA is launching not just the Founders Edition card, but also its partners are launching custom-design boards. Every partner's lineup we've come across thus far includes at least one SKU priced at the $1,200 baseline. The cards should be on the shelves tomorrow (November 16, 2022).

AMD Explains the Economics Behind Chiplets for GPUs

AMD, in its technical presentation for the new Radeon RX 7900 series "Navi 31" GPU, gave us an elaborate explanation on why it had to take the chiplets route for high-end GPUs, devices that are far more complex than CPUs. The company also enlightened us on what sets chiplet-based packages apart from classic multi-chip modules (MCMs). An MCM is a package that consists of multiple independent devices sharing a fiberglass substrate.

An example of an MCM would be a mobile Intel Core processor, in which the CPU die and the PCH die share a substrate. Here, the CPU and the PCH are independent pieces of silicon that can otherwise exist on their own packages (as they do on the desktop platform), but have been paired together on a single substrate to minimize PCB footprint, which is precious on a mobile platform. A chiplet-based device is one where a substrate is made up of multiple dies that cannot otherwise independently exist on their own packages without an impact on inter-die bandwidth or latency. They are essentially what should have been components on a monolithic die, but disintegrated into separate dies built on different semiconductor foundry nodes, with a purely cost-driven motive.

NVIDIA Introduces L40 Omniverse Graphics Card

During its GTC 2022 session, NVIDIA introduced its new generation of gaming graphics cards based on the novel Ada Lovelace architecture. NVIDIA is calling this their Omniverse GPU, as it is a part of the push to separate its GPUs used for graphics and AI/HPC models. The "L" model in the current product stack is used to accelerate graphics, with display ports installed on the GPU, while the "H" models (H100) are there to accelerate HPC/AI installments where visual elements are a secondary task. This is a further separation of the entire GPU market, where the HPC/AI SKUs get their own architecture, and GPUs for graphics processing are built on a new architecture as well. NVIDIA Confirms GeForce "Ada" Launch tied to "Project Beyond," Drops a Sneaky Phone Number

NVIDIA has been dropping a trail of breadcrumbs in its GeForce twitter feed over the past week surrounding "Project Beyond," which from the get go was interpreted as its debut of the GeForce RTX 40-series, based on the "Ada" graphics architecture (named after Ada Lovelace, credited with being the mother of computer programming). In its latest tweet, the company posted a picture of the famous "Diagram for the computation by the Engine," believed to be a computer program she wrote for the Charles Babbage number engine (an analog computer from the early 19th century).

The teaser video shows a copy of Lovelace's chart lying on a modern PC desk. One of the two monitors has a sticky note with a phone number scribbled on it—(208)-629-7538. Punters on social media decoded this not to be a random phone number, but a well-crafted hint about the vital specs of the top GeForce RTX 4090. "208" could denote 2.08 times the performance (or at least FP32 compute throughput) of the RTX 3090 "Ampere." 629 could be the die-size in mm², and 7538 could mean 75.38 billion transistors (the rumored transistor count of the 5 nm "AD102" silicon on which the RTX 4090 is based).

NVIDIA's Third Largest Ada GPU, the AD106, Features PCIe x8 Interface

It looks like NVIDIA is finally taking AMD's route in the mid-range by giving the third-largest silicon in its next-generation GeForce "Ada" RTX 40-series a narrower PCI-Express host interface. The AD106 silicon will be NVIDIA's third largest client GPU based on the "Ada" architecture, and succeeds the GA106 powering the likes of the GeForce RTX 3060. This chip reportedly features a narrower PCI-Express x8 host interface. At this point we don't know if the AD106 comes with PCI-Express Gen 5 or Gen 4. Regardless, having a PCIe lane count of 8 could possibly impact performance of the GPU on systems with PCI-Express Gen 3, such as 10th Gen Intel "Comet Lake," or even AMD's Ryzen 7 5700G APU.

Interestingly, the same leak also claims that the AD107, the fourth largest silicon powering lower mid-range SKUs, and which succeeds the GA107, features the same PCIe lane-count of x8. This is unlike AMD, which gives the "Navi 24" silicon a PCI-Express 4.0 x4 interface. Lowering the PCIe lane count simplifies PCB design, since there are fewer PCIe lanes to be wired out in precise trace-lengths to avoid asynchrony. It also reduces the pin-count of the GPU package. NVIDIA's calculation here is that there are now at least two generations of Intel and AMD platforms with PCIe Gen 4 or later (Intel "Rocket Lake" and "Alder Lake," AMD "Zen 2," and "Zen 3,") and so it makes sense to lower the PCIe lane-count.

The rumored 12 GB and 16 GB variants of the upcoming NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 "Ada" graphics cards could launch simultaneously, according to MEGAsizeGPU, who broke the story about the presence of two memory-based variants of the RTX 4080. A simultaneous launch of the two would make things similar to that of the GTX 1060 series, which came in 3 GB and 6 GB variants. Besides memory size, the two variants of the GTX 1060 differed in core-configuration (mainly CUDA core count), which widened the performance gulf between the two. The more recent example of memory-based variants is with the RTX 3080—which comes in 10 GB and 12 GB variants with different CUDA core counts; but which were launched far apart from each other.
