Worldwide PC Shipments Decline Another 15.0% in the Third Quarter of 2022, According to IDC Tracker

Declines continued for the traditional PC market as global shipments totaled 74.3 million units during the third quarter of 2022 (3Q22), according to preliminary results from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. Cooling demand and uneven supply have contributed to a year-over-year contraction of 15.0%. However, shipment volumes remain well above pre-pandemic levels when PC volumes were largely driven by commercial refreshes due to the looming end of support for Windows 7.

"Consumer demand has remained muted though promotional activity from the likes of Apple and other players has helped soften the fall and reduce channel inventory by a couple weeks across the board," said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC's Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers. "Supply has also reacted to the new lows by reducing orders with Apple being the only exception as their third quarter supply increased to make up for lost orders stemming from the lockdowns in China during the second quarter."

GIGABYTE Announces Data Center Liquid Immersion Cooling

GIGABYTE Technology, today announced participation in KDDI's one-phase immersion cooling proof of concept that demonstrates how alternative cooling solutions in data centers are needed and should be environmentally minded. Through this joint venture it is possible to sustain high-performance, improve the environmental impact, and reduce costs; all while doing so in a self-contained portable container. KDDI approached technology partners, such as GIGABYTE, to explore ways to bridge various disciplines to achieve the goal of an environmentally sustainable data center. GIGABYTE was keen to assist and had been monitoring and developing immersion cooling systems over the last decade.

Staring data centers in the face is one of their great challenges, and that is how to rectify the increasing power density in traditional data centers and deploy edge computing solutions. Companies are increasing reliant on cloud services and consumers expect fast streaming media and real-time results, but all of this adds work in the data center. Even if the power density reaches an acceptable balance with performance and cooling, can it be implemented in data centers with a higher consideration for the environment and operate more efficiently? That is the crux of the matter as more novel solutions must come out or the problem will only be compounded. Using liquid immersion cooling it is possible to achieve a PUE (power usage effectiveness) of 1.2-1.3, which is far better than the PUE of 1.7 found in air-cooled data centers today. PUE is an important metric to use as it determines the energy efficiency of a data center. If a data center is able to reach a PUE of 1.2-1.3 then it can reduce power consumption by 30-50%.

Colorado's Maybell Quantum Exits Stealth; Breakthrough Quantum Hardware to be Made in USA

This morning, Maybell Quantum unveiled the Icebox, a cryogenic platform to power the next generation of quantum computers. Maybell's Icebox solves several pressing challenges for scaling quantum. Quantum computing is a reinvention of computing. It will perform calculations in seconds that would require billions of years for today's most powerful supercomputers, with profound implications for everything from logistics and agriculture to medicine and climate change. But achieving reliable quantum computation requires qubits - quantum computers' fundamental building block - be in a state where they can be finely manipulated and communicated with through minute signals. Maybell's approach to these challenges has attracted contracts from DARPA, NSIC/DIU, and leading research universities, and is now available to the quantum computing industry.

"Controlling quantum devices at room-temperature is like playing a sonata in a hurricane," explains Corban Tillemann-Dick, Maybell's CEO. "Cooling devices to a few thousandths of a degree above absolute zero, nature's 'speed limit for cold,' calms this chaos to near 'quantum silence' so quantum operations are controllable." Traditional quantum cryogenic systems, however, are tangles of tubes and wires that cover hundreds of square feet and often require months to set up and PhDs to operate. Moreover, to increase capacity, these systems typically become even larger and more complex.

ASUS GeForce RTX 3070 With Noctua Cooling Appears

Back in August, we have seen rumors of ASUS collaborating with Austrian cooling specialist Noctua to develop a custom set of graphics cards based on custom cooling solutions provided by Noctua. In the early EEC listings, the references stood for a GPU based on NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 3070 GPU with a custom cooling provided by Noctua. We thought that such a collaboration would open many doors for both companies. Today, the product is finally looking like a genuine offer, and we got the first set of pictures thanks to ASUS Vietnam.

The card, pictured below, has dual 8-pin power connectors to supply the chip and has three DisplayPort connectors accompanied by two HDMI outputs. The product is a three-slot body with Noctua's iconic brown theme, featuring two large fans to cool the heatsink. Sony Takes a Step Backwards with PlayStation 5, Cuts on Cooling Capacity in the new Revision

Sony's latest gaming console, PlayStation 5, has been selling at loss up until August 4th, when the company announced that the new console is now profitable. However, it seems like Sony is trying to extend those profits even further with the latest revision of PlayStation 5 that is seemingly taking a step backward. According to the latest report, Sony has updated its PlayStation 5 internal design and the console is now featuring a smaller heatsink, which you can see below. The new revision is featuring a significantly smaller heatsink and an absence of the large copper cold plate. The fan that cools the heatsink is also reduced, resulting in a complete thermal downgrade.

While there was no in-depth testing of the cooling performance, the exhaust system of the new PS5 revision is spitting out 3-5 degrees Celsius higher temperatures. That is just measuring the air coming out, where the actual SoC could run hotter by an even larger margin. As we wait for more testing of the new PS5 revisions, we have to wonder why Sony opted to cut corners on such an important piece, that ultimately provides the console with longevity, due to cooler silicon.
