The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA ) announced today that it has published the Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) Standard version 1.5. Replacing eDP 1.4b, published in 2015, eDP 1.5 retains all key features of the previous specification while adding additional capabilities and performance. These include an improved panel self-refresh protocol coupled with enhancements to VESA's Adaptive-Sync protocol, a combination that results in added power savings and improved motion image quality.

For devices such as laptop PCs with an embedded display, eDP is the electrical interface for transporting video data from the system's graphics hardware to the internal display panel. eDP is widely adopted for larger, higher-resolution displays as it provides the highest resolutions, refresh rates and color depths using a low wire count with low EMI radiation. Enhancements to the eDP standard have continued since its introduction more than 10 years ago, thanks to contributions by major OEMs through the VESA organization. eDP applications include laptops, all-in-one PCs, premium tablets, automotive displays, and other systems that incorporate a display panel with a video or graphics video source.

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) announced today that it has added a new 600 performance level to its DisplayHDR True Black high dynamic range (HDR) specification and standard. Based on VESA's widely adopted High-Performance Monitor and Display Compliance Test Specification (DisplayHDR), the DisplayHDR True Black standard is optimized for emissive display technologies, such as organic light emitting diode (OLED) and future microLED displays.

The new DisplayHDR True Black 600 tier offers higher luminance than the existing DisplayHDR and DisplayHDR True Black 400 and 500 tiers. DisplayHDR and DisplayHDR True Black are the display industry's first fully open standards specifying HDR quality for LCD and emissive displays, respectively. VESA also announced today that three products have already been certified to the new DisplayHDR True Black 600 performance level - the ASUS Vivobook Pro 14, Vivobook Pro 14X and Vivobook 15 laptops. ASUS today via its TUF Gaming brand introduced the VG32AQL1A monitor, which is sure to tick a lot of boxes for many people looking for a gaming monitor. The 32" diagonal may put some off due to the typical distance users sit away from the monitor. The 2560 x 1440 Fast IPS panel features a 1 ms response time and 170 Hz refresh rate - as well as support for FreeSync Premium and NVIDIA's G-Sync Compatible program. In addition to the fast response time and refresh rates, the ASUS TUF Gaming VG32AQL1A also features ELMB sync (for black frame insertion and motion blur reduction) as well as a smart, "variable overdrive" setting that dynamically changes monitor overdrive values according to the current frame rate so as to further reduce motion blur.

Typical brightness is set at a standard 300 cd/m², with peak brightness achieving the 400 cd/m² that enables this monitor to boast of VESA's Display HDR 400 certification. Contrast ratio is 1,000:1, and color coverage stands at 99% of the DCI-P3 standard. I/O is ensured by 1x DisplayPort 1.2, 2x HDMI 2.0, 2x USB 3.0, 1x earphone jack, and 2x 2 W stereo speakers. Usability is improved by the stand's support for -5 to 20 ° tilt, -10 to 10 ° swivel, and 0 to 90 mm height adjustments. No pricing information was available at time of writing.

The AOC AG274QXM packs the latest Mini LED technology, enabling lighting of 576 individual zones, improving contrast and brightness enough so that it features VESA's DisplayHDR 1,000 certification. The 170 Hz IPS panel and WQHD (2560 x 1440) resolution is arguably at the best performance/image quality ratio compared to the current-gen graphics cards for the most demanding raytraced games, alongside the 1 ms response time and FreeSync support.

The AOC AG274QXM's panel also offers color coverage at 100 percent sRGB, 99 percent Adobe RGB, 98 percent DCI-P3 and a Delta-E <2 on its 10-bit panel. There are two integrated 5 W loudspeakers with DTS support, and I/O is taken care of by 2x HDMI 2.0, 1x DisplayPort 1.4, a USB 3.0 HUB, and 1x USB-Type C with DisplayPort alternate mode and 65 W power delivery. There is also RGB lighting on the monitor's stand. It isn't currently known whether AOC will launch the AG274QXM monitor to other markets other than the Chinese one.

Viotek rolled out the GFI27DBXA, a 27-inch monitor with WQHD (2560 x 1440 pixels) native resolution, 180 Hz refresh rate, and 1 ms response time, which add to its gaming feature-set. The IPS display panel behind all this, is capable of 10-bpc color (1.07 billion colors), 178°/178° viewing angles, 600 cd/m² maximum brightness, and HDR, although the company didn't mention if this is DisplayHDR 600. The panel also supports AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-SYNC (compatible). Display inputs include two DisplayPort 1.4, and one HDMI 2.0. The monitor also features game genre-specific display presets, OSD crosshairs, anti-glare surface treatment, and 3-level blue light filtering. Its stand allows tilt, height, and 90° rotation adjustments. Available now, the Viotek GFI27DBXA is priced at USD $370.

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has recently issued a press release that addresses the use of illegitimate DisplayHDR 2000 certification. VESA is the body responsible for certifying displays under its DisplayHDR scheme which features various tiers corresponding to peak luminance. The recently announced Samsung Odyssey G9 and ASUS EI491CRG9 monitors are advertised as having DisplayHDR 2000 certification on Chinese retailer Taobao which is not possible given that currently available certifications only go up to DisplayHDR 1400. VESA has not ruled out a possible future DisplayHDR 2000 standard but given this press release, it would appear unlikely to be released anytime soon.
