NVIDIA GeForce "Ada Lovelace" Memory Bus-width Info Leaked

The deluge of NVIDIA leaks continue following the major cyber-attack on the company, with hackers getting away with sensitive information about current and upcoming products. The latest in this series covers the memory bus widths of the next-generation RTX 40-series GPUs based on the "Ada Lovelace" graphics architecture. There is early-information covering the streaming multiprocessor (SM) counts of each GPU, and their large on-die caches.

The top-of-the-line AD102 silicon allegedly has a 384-bit wide memory bus, similar to its predecessor. The next-best AD103 silicon has a 256-bit wide memory bus. Things get very interesting with the AD104, which has a 192-bit wide memory bus. The AD104 is a revelation here, because it succeeds a long line of NVIDIA GPUs with 256-bit memory buses (eg: GA104, TU104, GP104, GM204, etc). This confirms the theory that much like AMD, NVIDIA is narrowing the memory bus widths in the lower segments to cut board costs, and compensate for the narrower bus-width with large on-die caches, high memory data-rates, and other memory-management optimizations.

NVIDIA Increases Caches for Ada Lovelace, to Catch Up with AMD

The next-generation "Ada Lovelace" graphics architecture powering NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 40-series graphics cards, could see a significant increase in on-die cache memory, according to leaked source-code related to drivers or firmware, seen by XinoAssassin on Twitter. The source-code leak emanates from the recent large-scale cyber-attack on NVIDIA. When comparing source files related to Ampere and Ada architectures, XinoAssassin noticed lines that reference large cache slices.

From this, it was analyzed that the top-of-the-line AD102 silicon will have 96 MB of last-level cache on the silicon; the AD103 and AD104 chips have 64 MB; the AD106 has 48 MB, and the smallest AD107 has 32 MB. Compare this to the 6 MB on the GA102, puny 4 MB on the GA103 and GA104; 3 MB on the GA106, and 2 MB on the GA107. NVIDIA is known to make innovations in generational memory bandwidth increase and memory management, with each new architecture. The company could tap into even faster versions of GDDR6X memory it co-developed with Micron (GDDR6 with PAM4 signaling).

NVIDIA Provides a Statement on MIA RTX 3090 Ti GPUs

NVIDIA's RTX 3090 Ti graphics card could very well be a Spartan from 343 Industries' Halo, in that it too is missing in action. Originally announced at CES 2022 for a January 27th release, the new halo product for the RTX 30-series family even had some of its specifications announced in a livestream. However, the due date has come and gone for more than half a month, and NVIDIA still hadn't said anything about the why and the how of it - or when should gamers hoping to snag the best NVIDIA graphics card of this generation ready their F5 keys (and bank accounts). Until now - in a statement to The Verge, NVIDIA spokesperson Jen Andersson said that "We don't currently have more info to share on the RTX 3090 Ti, but we'll be in touch when we do". Disappointed? So are we.

While the reasons surrounding the RTX 3090 Ti's delayed launch still aren't clear - and with NVIDIA's response, we're left wondering if they ever will be - there were some warning signs that not all the grass was green on the RTX 3090 Ti's launch. The consensus seems to be that NVIDIA found some last-minute production issues with the RTX 3090 Ti, which prompted an emergency delay on the cards' launch. The purported problems range from issues with the card's PCB, BIOS, and even GDDR6X 21 Gbps memory modules - but it's unclear which of these (or perhaps which combination) truly prompted the very real delay on the product launch.

NVIDIA Launches GeForce RTX 3080 12GB Graphics Card

NVIDIA today sneaked in a major update to its high-end GeForce RTX-30 "Ampere" series with the new RTX 3080 12 GB. Based on the same 8 nm "GA102" silicon as the original RTX 3080 (10 GB), the RTX 3080 Ti, the RTX 3090, and the upcoming RTX 3090 Ti, this SKU maxes out the 384-bit wide GDDR6X memory interface of the silicon, giving it 12 GB of 19.5 Gbps GDDR6X memory, resulting in a memory bandwidth of 912 GB/s, compared to 760 GB/s of the RTX 3080 (10 GB), and its 320-bit memory bus.

Memory isn't the only upgrade, the RTX 3080 12 GB gets a few more CUDA cores. With 70 out of 84 streaming multiprocessors (SM) enabled, the GPU gets 8,960 CUDA cores. In comparison, the RTX 3080 (10 GB) has 68 SM and 8,704 CUDA cores. This results in a Tensor core and TMU count of 280, and RT core count of 70. NVIDIA is positioning this SKU in between the RTX 3080 and the RTX 3080 Ti, and real-world prices of the card can be as high as $1,700, if not higher. TechPowerUp has several RTX 3080 12 GB graphics cards, but our editor and graphics card reviewer, W1zzard, is on a much-needed skiing holiday in the Alps, since we got no heads-up on this launch, and no marketing materials to help us understand the product. Hopefully NVIDIA puts out a public GeForce driver update later today, and we'll use it to test the cards we have. Expect our reviews to go live next week.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 12GB Real, EVGA FTW3 Ultra Card Pictured

NVIDIA is indeed readying a 12 GB variant of the GeForce RTX 3080, positioning it between the current RTX 3080 (10 GB), and the RTX 3080 Ti, in what is an extremely cluttered lineup at the top. If NVIDIA's recent adventure in necromancing the RTX 2060 "Turing" with 12 GB memory is anything to go by, the RTX 3080 12 GB may not be a simple memory uplift, but come with other improvements in specs, starting with the wider 384-bit wide GDDR6X memory bus (compared to 320-bit for the original RTX 3080), a few more CUDA cores, and higher clocks. A picture of an EVGA-branded custom design board was scored by VideoCardz. Its design is standard EVGA fare, resembling the RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 Ultra, but with the box clearly labeling "RTX 3080" and "12 GB GDDR6X."

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB Edition Rumored to Launch on January 11th

During the CES 2022 keynote, we have witnessed NVIDIA update its GeForce RTX 30 series family with GeForce RTX 3050 and RTX 3090 Ti. However, this is not an end to NVIDIA's updates to the Ampere generation, as we now hear industry sources from Wccftech suggest that we could see a GeForce RTX 3080 GPU with 12 GB of GDDR6X VRAM enabled, launched as a separate product. Compared to the regular RTX 3080 that carries only 10 GB of GDDR6X, the new 12 GB version is supposed to bring a slight bump up to the specification list. The GA102-220 GPU SKU found inside the 12 GB variant will feature 70 SMs with 8960 CUDA, 70 RT cores, and 280 TMUs.

This represents a minor improvement over the regular GA102-200 silicon inside the 8 GB model. However, the significant difference is the memory organization. With the new 12 GB model, we have a 384-bit memory bus allowing GDDR6X modules to achieve a bandwidth of 912 GB/s, all while running at 19 Gbps speeds. The overall TDP will also receive a bump to 350 Watts, compared to 320 Watts of the regular RTX 3080 model. For more information regarding final clock speeds and pricing, we have to wait for the alleged launch date - January 11th.

EVGA RTX 3090 Ti KINGPIN to Require Dual 12-pin Connectors, 975W Capability

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti is real, and coming to gamers miners within Q1 2022. The new SKU maxes out NVIDIA's largest silicon based on the GeForce "Ampere" graphics architecture, the GA102, and pairs it with even faster 21 Gbps GDDR6X memory; but these changes come at a significant impact on power, with the typical board power for a stock RTX 3090 Ti reportedly being rated at 450 W, compared to the 350 W value of the RTX 3090. For enthusiast-class custom-design boards such as the EVGA KINGPIN, this only means even more elaborate setups, as QuasarZone forums found out.

While the current RTX 3090 KINGPIN comes with three 8-pin PCIe power connectors, a configuration capable of delivering up to 525 W (including the PCIe slot), the new RTX 3090 Ti KINGPIN ropes in the small but mighty 12-pin Molex MicroFit 3.0 connector, and comes with not one, but two of them! NVIDIA debuted the 12-pin connector in the consumer space with its RTX 30-series Founders Edition graphics cards. The connector is capable of delivering 450 W of power. With two of these on the RTX 3090 Ti, you're looking at a maximum power input capability of 975 W! It's only now, that PSUs are shipping with 12-pin cables, and even the high-Wattage ones we've come across, only pack one such connector. The EVGA card could hence include several dual- or triple-8-pin to 12-pin adapter cables. Pictured below is the RTX 3090 KINGPIN.

Leaked Document Confirms That MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X Graphics Card Launches January 27th

In the past few months, we have heard rumors of NVIDIA launching an upgraded version of the GA102 silicon called GeForce RTX 3090 Ti. The upgraded version is supposed to max out the chip and bring additional performance to the table. According to anonymous sources of VideoCardz, MSI, one of NVIDIA's add-in board (AIB) partners, is preparing to update its SUPRIM X lineup of graphics cards with the MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X GPU, scheduled for January 27th launch date. This suggests that the official NDA lifts for these RTX 3090 Ti GPUs on January 27th, meaning that we could see AIBs teasing their models very soon.

As a general reminder, the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics card should use a GA102-350 silicon SKU with 84 SMs, 10752 CUDA cores, 336 TMUs, 24 GB of GDDR6X memory running on a 384-bit bus at 21 Gbps speed with 1008 GB/s bandwidth, and a TBP of a whopping 450 Watts. If these specifications remain valid, the GPU could become the top contender in the market, however, with a massive drawback of pulling nearly half a KiloWatt of power.

ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Box Pictured

It looks like GeForce RTX 3090 Ti is indeed the name of the maxed out "Ampere" GA102 silicon, and NVIDIA did not go with "RTX 3090 SUPER" for its naming. A picture emerged of an ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics card that confirms the naming. The board design of the card looks similar to the RTX 3090 TUF Gaming, except that the Axial-Tech fans have changed, with more blades on the impellers.

The GeForce RTX 3090 Ti is expected to max out the GA102 silicon, featuring all 10,752 CUDA cores, 84 RT cores, and 336 Tensor cores, physically present on the silicon. The memory size is unchanged over the RTX 3090, with 24 GB of GDDR6X memory. What's new is that NVIDIA is reportedly using faster 21 Gbps-rated memory chips, compared to 19.5 Gbps on the RTX 3090. The typical board power is rated at 450 W, compared to 350 W on the RTX 3090. NVIDIA is expected to announce this card at its January 4 press event along the sidelines of the 2022 International CES.

Samsung Sampling 24 Gbps GDDR6 Memory Chips

Samsung has started sampling high-speed 24 Gbps-rated GDDR6 memory chips. Just to be clear, these are standard GDDR6 chips built to JEDEC-specifications, and not GDDR6X, a derivative standard co-developed by NVIDIA and Micron leveraging PAM4 signaling. The 24 Gbps chips by Samsung can be used by both NVIDIA and AMD, if their GPU designs can handle the data-rates. The specific part number for the chip is "K4ZAF325BC-SC24." This chip has a density of 16 Gb (2 GB), which means 8 of these make up 16 GB across a 256-bit wide memory bus, and 12 of these make 24 GB across a 384-bit bus.

At 24 Gbps, these chips offer 50% more bandwidth than 16 Gbps, and 71% more than 14 Gbps. A hypothetical 6 nm refresh of the "Navi 21" paired with these chips, would hence have 768 GB/s of memory bandwidth on top of its Infinity Cache bandwidth, compared to 512 GB/s on the current Radeon RX 6800 XT. Since the chip is sampling, it's likely that both AMD and NVIDIA have their hands on it. There's no word on when the chip hits mass-production, but this could definitely happen within 2022.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti to Feature 21 Gbps GDDR6X Memory

NVIDIA's upcoming flagship graphics card, the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti (also known as RTX 3090 SUPER in some rumor circles); could feature the company's fastest memory solution for GeForce, according to a Uniko's Hardware report. The card maxes out not just the 384-bit bus width of the "GA102" silicon, but also uses Micron-sourced "MT61K512M32KPA-21U" GDDR6X memory chips, which are rated for 21 Gbps date-rates. This results in a roughly 7.7% increase in memory bandwidth over the RTX 3090, with a whopping 1008 GB/s on tap. The title of the highest memory bandwidth on a client-segment graphics card would still go to the Radeon VII, which uses 4096-bit HBM2 to achieve 1024 GB/s. The RTX 3090 Ti also maxes out the "GA102" silicon, by enabling all 84 streaming multiprocessors (SM).

Chinese Innosilicon Fenghua No.1 Graphics Card Supports PCIe 4.0, HDMI 2.1, GDDR6X, & DirectX

Chinese company Innosilicon Technology has recently announced their Fenghua No.1 high-performance server graphics card. The card features a dual-fan cooling design with HDMI 2.1 and Embedded DisplayPort 1.4 video connectors. The card will utilize a PCIe 4.0 connector and features GDDR6X memory developed by Innosilicon Technology with potential speeds of 21 Gbps. We have seen announcements from Chinese companies with similar products in the past but this recent announcement is the first to include support for a variety of graphics APIs including DirectX. The press release from the company didn't specify the DirectX version supported but also noted that the card will support OpenGL, OpenGLES, OpenCL, and Vulkan which will enable VR, AR, and AI applications.

ASUS Intros GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Turbo Graphics Card

ASUS gave the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti its Turbo lateral-blower treatment. Designed for cases with a strict 2-slot limitation, or workstations with multiple add-on cards that have just two slots to spare for the graphics card, the RTX 3070 Ti joins other RTX 30-series "Ampere" cards from ASUS to receive this design. Its cooler features an aluminium channel heatsink that pulls heat from the GPU and memory over a copper plate (although it's not known if this is a vapor chamber plate like on the RTX 3090 Turbo). The lateral blower features double-ball bearings. The card draws power from two 8-pin PCIe power connectors located toward the tail-end (and not on top), these are right next to SSI mount holes that could come handy in workstation cases. The card sticks to NVIDIA-reference clock speeds, with 1770 MHz boost clocks, and 19 Gbps (GDDR6X-effective) memory. The company didn't reveal pricing.

NVIDIA Rumored To Launch RTX 3090 SUPER in January 2022

NVIDIA has been preparing a new flagship graphics card with their RTX 3090 SUPER featuring a fully unlocked GA102 GPU. The RTX 3090 SUPER will include 10,752 CUDA cores, 336 Tensor cores, and 84 RT cores paired with 24 GB of GDDR6X memory on a 384-bit wide memory bus. These speed improvements are set to increase the cards TDP to 400 W compared to 350 W for the base RTX 3090. We have recently seen a new rumor from @hongxing2020 that claims NVIDIA will be launching the RTX 3090 SUPER, a refreshed RTX 3070 Ti with 16 GB memory, and the RTX 2060 12 GB in January 2022. The RTX 3090 SUPER and RTX 2060 12 GB launches have been expected for some time but this is the first mention we have seen of an RTX 3070 TI 16 GB.

NVIDIA is readying the GeForce RTX 3090 SUPER, the first "SUPER" series model from the RTX 30-series, following a recent round of "Ti" refreshes for its product stack. According to kopite7kimi and Greymon55, who each have a high strike-rate with NVIDIA rumors, the RTX 3090 SUPER could finally max-out the 8 nm "GA102" silicon on which nearly all high-end models from this NVIDIA GeForce generation are based. A fully unlocked GA102 comes with 10,752 CUDA cores, 336 Tensor cores, 84 RT cores, 336 TMUs, and 112 ROPs. The RTX 3090 stops short of maxing this out, with its 10,496 CUDA cores.

NVIDIA's strategy with the alleged RTX 3090 SUPER will be to not only max out the GA102 silicon, with its 10,752 CUDA cores, but also equip it with the fastest possible GDDR6X memory variant, which ticks at 21 Gbps data-rate, compared to 19.5 Gbps on the RTX 3090, and 19 Gbps on the RTX 3080 and RTX 3080 Ti. At this speed, across the chip's 384-bit wide memory bus, the RTX 3090 SUPER will enjoy 1 TB/s of memory bandwidth. Besides more CUDA cores, it's possible that the GPU Boost frequency could be increased. All this comes at a cost, though, with Greymon55 predicting a total graphics power (TGP) of at least 400 W, compared to 350 W of the RTX 3090. A product launch is expected within 2021.

MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Ti SUPRIM X and Ventus 3X Pictured, 8GB GDDR6X Confirmed, GA104-based

Here are some of the first press-shots of the upcoming MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Ti SUPRIM X and MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Ventus 3X graphics cards. Boxes of the cards confirm 8 GB GDDR6X as the memory configuration of the RTX 3070 Ti. Taking a close look at the press-shot of the RTX 3070 Ti SUPRIM X, and comparing it with those of the already-launched RTX 3070 SUPRIM X and RTX 3080 SUPRIM X, we find that the card looks closer to the RTX 3070 SUPRIM X. This would indicate that MSI is reusing the PCB and cooler design from that card, which means that the RTX 3070 Ti likely maxes out the GA104 silicon, rather than being a heavily cut-down GA102.

A maxed out GA104 would mean 6,144 CUDA cores spread across 48 streaming multiprocessors, 192 tensor cores, 48 RT cores, 192 TMUs, and 96 ROPs. The chip also features a 256-bit wide memory interface, which we now know is capable of handling fast GDDR6X memory. Besides significantly increased memory bandwidth, the RTX 3070 Ti could also dial up GPU clock-speeds. NVIDIA probably finds these changes sufficient to compete with the Radeon RX 6800, which outclasses the RTX 3070 in non-raytraced gaming.

NVIDIA Officially Teases RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3070 Ti

Months of speculation can now start to come to an end, with NVIDIA themselves officially teasing the soon-to-be-released RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3070 Ti graphics cards. These come in to supplant NVIDIA's previous category leaders RTX 3080 and RTX 3070, updating and increasing their performance so as to better compete with AMD's RDNA2-powered RX 6900 XT and RX 6800 XT. NVIDIA starting to tease these releases now coincides with the COMPUTEX 2021 keynote event, scheduled for next week.

The RTX 3080 Ti will be powered by the Ampere GA102-225 GPU (10,240 active CUDA cores), paired with 12 GB of GDDR6X memory (an increase from the RTX 3080's 10 GB). Bitspower Unveils Mobius RTX 3090 FE Water Block, and X-TEND Liquid-Cooled Backplate

Bitspower today unveiled a pair of innovative liquid-cooling products for high-end graphics cards. First up is the premium Mobius water block for the GeForce RTX 3090 Founders Edition; and next up, is the X-TEND Backplate for ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3090 series. The Mobius (model number: BPPRE-VG3090FEID) takes advantage of the compact PCB of the RTX 3090 FE to give you a compact 2-slot solution, with the plumbing located at its tail-end, rather than along the top (where NVIDIA's fancy 12-pin power connector is located). The block uses nickel-plated copper as its main material, with a chunky tinted acrylic top that's wrapped around by an alloy scaffolding that attempts to resemble NVIDIA's original product design. The top is studded with addressable-RGB LEDs.

The X-TEND Backplate for ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3090 is an interesting product. It's a backplate that features a small water block that pulls heat from the GDDR6X memory chips located at the reverse side of the PCB, as well as heat from right behind the GPU. A distributor is included, so you can share coolant with your main water block that's on the obverse side of the PCB. Barring the centrally-located water block, the X-TEND is made mainly of acrylic, with a PE-film cover, and is studded with addressable RGB LEDs. The Mobius for RTX 3090 FE is priced at USD $425, while the X-TEND liquid-cooled backplate for the ROG Strix RTX 3090, is priced at $198.

NVIDIA is expected to price the card competitively against the RX 6900 XT. AMD, meanwhile, has refreshed the RX 6900 XT with higher clock-speeds, released as special SKUs through its AIB partners.
