Sharkoon Announces QuickPort USB 3.0 SATA HDD Dock with 3-port USB 3.0 Hub

Sharkoon is expanding the USB3.0 collection to their "QuickPort" Hard Drive adapter family: The Sharkoon SATA QuickPort H3 USB3.0 offers the traditional plug-in slot for SATA Hard Drives and is directly connected to you computer via the USB3.0 port. With the latest model three USB3.0 Hub ports are integrated into the front side, over the already external SuperSpeed device, for example USB3.0 sticks, which can be directly connected with the system.

The plug-in slot for SATA hard drives in 2.5 and 3.5 inch format contains, similar to other QuickPort models, a hard drive ejection button and LEDs indicating both power supply and hard drive activity. Buffalo Intros New High-Capacity USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drives

Buffalo Technology rolled out two new high-capacity desktop hard drives, HD-LXU3 and HD-LXVU3. The former comes in 1 TB and 2 TB capacities, while the latter in 3 TB. The drives use Buffalo's workhorse chassis that makes up most of its desktop hard drives, measuring 39 x 123 x 189 mm. Both drives use USB 3.0 SuperSpeed interface to connect to the host over a bandwidth of 5 Gb/s, they do, however, rely on DC power adaptors.

The bundled ecoManager software parks and spins down the drive when it's idling, reducing power consumption by 70 percent. Backup and encryption software is bundled, too. In USB 3.0 mode, the 5 Gb/s bandwidth can't bottleneck the drive, but when connected to USB 2.0, the bundled Turbo PC EX can help make the most out of the available 480 Mb/s interface bandwidth. The drives are fitted with noise-dampening materials that reduce noise and vibration. A tiny fan ventilates the unit, which can be secured using the Kensington lock slot. The 1 TB and 2 TB HD-LXU3 are priced at around $175 and $230, respectively. The 3 TB HD-LXVU3 goes for around $320 in Japan.

Japanese peripheral company Logitec launched a new line of premium portable hard drives, in the LHD-PBJU3W, consisting of 500 GB, 750 GB, and 1 TB models. The drives use USB 3.0 to eliminate any performance bottleneck with the host machine, and have a low acoustic output of 18 dBA. Measuring 80 x 124 x 14 mm, Logitec's drives weigh 150 g. The 500 GB and 750 GB models are available in Japan for $98 and $117, respectively, while the 1 TB model will join the pack later this month.

Scythe Announces Himuro Mini HDD Cooler and Noise-Dampener

Cooling expert Scythe is hereby announcing a smaller version of the Himuro HDD Cooler. New Himuro Mini is designed to cool and silence 2,5 inch Hard Drives. Users are able to install standard 2,5" Hard Drives with a thickness of up to 13 millimeter. Alike the former announced Himuro HDD Cooler, this smaller version is manufactured using high quality aluminum which is forming a chassis thickness of around 2 mm. This results in an overall product weight of 280 gram.

Himuro Mini is based on a design of two separate aluminum shells which are covering the Hard Drive and are fixed by screws. In order to reduce vibrations and noise coming from the HDD, thermal compound pads are included and vary depending on HDD thickness. Furthermore all inner sides are covered by thermal compound pads to achieve effective heat transfer to the fin structure on the outside of Himuro Mini chassis.

Toshiba Unveils New STOR.E Edition USB 3.0 Hard Drives, Pack Backup Software

Toshiba Computer Systems, a division of Toshiba Europe GmbH, announced the new STOR.E EDITION today. The external hard disk drive features a USB 3.0 port allowing for fast USB 3.0 data transfer. The elegant design of the STOR.E EDITION's casing echoes the sleek, modern design of Toshiba's latest Satellite, Satellite Pro and Tecra R-series laptops. STOR.E EDITION will be available during the second quarter 2011 in Europe.

Toshiba's STOR.E EDITION comes in four different colours - red, blue, silver and black - and a casing with a grooved texture. The storage capacity of up to 1TB is large enough to house huge digital media libraries.

Gigabyte Intros Pure Classic Series Portable Hard Drives

Gigabyte rolled out its Pure Classic series of portable hard drives. The series includes USB 2.0-only, and USB 3.0 (compatible with USB 2.0) variants. The USB 3.0 variant is called Pure Classic 3.0. Measuring 120 x 81 x 14 mm, and weighing about 150 g, the Pure Classic drives sport a matte black body with a dash of piano black giving it a formal (classic) touch. A white (matte+gloss) variant is also in the works. It comes with a leathery pouch to add to its styling. It is available in 320, 500, 640, and 750 gigabyte capacities, though transfer rates are not known. Gigabyte didn't give out pricing information, either.

Transcend Launches 1TB USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drives

Samsung Announces New External Hard Drives with SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Interface

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, announced today its new family of hard disk drives, including two portable drives and a desktop storage station. Supporting the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface, the new external hard drives can provide data transfer speeds of up to 5 gigabits per second, delivering a maximum 10-fold higher data transfer rate over the USB 2.0, allowing users to transfer a 25-gigabyte full HD movie in just four minutes.

Samsung's portable drives come in two designs, the entry-level M2 Portable and the premium C2 Portable 3.0. The M2 Portable comes with a wave-like matte finish that covers scratches and fingerprints, with curved sides for a comfortable grip. The drives are available in densities of up to 1 terabyte, USB 2.0/3.0 interface, and four colors: Brown Black, Noble Beige, Mist Gray and Clay Orange.

Buffalo Intros TV-Buff Hard Drives, Can Record from, Playback to USB-ready HDTVs

Buffalo's hard drives finished their long walk from the desktop to the living room, with a new series of drives carrying the capability to connect to most new HDTVs over USB, and acting as both a video recorder, and a media library, with up to 2 TB of voluminous storage. The HD-LBU2/V drives from Buffalo use USB 2.0 to connect to various kinds of USB-ready HDTVs such as Regza from Toshiba, Viera from Panasonic, Sony's Bravia , Sharp's Aquos, as well as LG's Infinia. WD Expands Line of SAS Hard Drives for Enterprise Applications

Western Digital, a leader in the desktop, mobile, high-capacity enterprise and consumer markets for hard drives, today announced the availability of its second-generation WD S25 SAS drives (photo) and its latest WD RE SAS 3.5-inch drives for the traditional enterprise market. Shipping now, the 2.5-inch, 10,000 RPM, WD S25 with SAS 6 Gb/s interface hard drives offer IT professionals ultra-reliable and efficient, high-performance storage with new 450 GB and 600 GB capacities. Hitachi Intros Deskstar 7K and 5K Hard Drives with 3 TB Capacities

Hitachi listed two of its new mammoth-capacity hard drives on its website, the Deskstar 7K3000 and Deskstar 5K3000. These drives are available in capacities of up to 3 TB; 2 TB and 1 TB variants are also available. The drives have spindle speeds of 7200 rpm (for the 7K3000) and 5400 rpm (for the 5K3000). Available in the 3.5-inch form factor, these drives use the SATA 6 Gb/s interface, but are backwards compatible with SATA 3 Gb/s and 1.5 Gb/s. The 7K3000 uses a 64 MB cache, while the 5K3000 makes do with 32 MB. Both drives have default sector sizes of 512 bytes. The company is yet to reveal pricing.
