EMEA PC Market Maintains Growth in 2021Q3, Despite Lower Consumer Spending and Continued Supply Issues, Says IDC

The Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) traditional PC market, (desktops, notebooks, and workstations) grew 12.7% YoY in 2021Q3, for a total of 24.4 million units, according to International Data Corporation (IDC). A strong commercial performance throughout the region is the main driver of this growth, offsetting a slowdown in consumer, which could not keep up with the unfavorable growth rates seen in 2020Q3.

The Western European PC market enjoyed solid growth (15.8% YoY). Desktops continued their upward trend and increased 21.8% YoY—outgrowing notebooks (+13.1%) for the first time in six quarters. Desktop growth can be attributed to strength on the commercial side, as employers look to equip and refresh their increasingly populated offices. Notebooks also saw solid commercial shipments but were stifled by component shortages, primarily in IC boards and panels.

Lenovo Teases NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 and RTX 3050 Ti Clock Speeds and TGP

NVIDIA is preparing the launch of an entry-level graphics card based on the Ampere architecture, sometimes later in the year, with possible dates being this or the following quarter. The GeForce RTX 3050 and RTX 3050 Ti are supposed to be the slowest SKUs in the whole Ampere lineup, representing the least expensive choice from the entire generation. However, we are wondering what the cards will look like and what are some design choices NVIDIA will introduce to these SKUs. Lenovo, the maker of the popular various kinds of laptops, has accidentally listed these exact SKUs in the specification section of its Legion gaming laptop.

The GPUs in question are NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 and RTX 3050 Ti mobile edition SKUs, probably based on the GA107 GPU SKU. Both versions are equipped with 4 GB of GDDR6 memory running on a 128-bit bus. The regular GeForce RTX 3050 SKU is configurable from a TGP of just 60 to 80 Watts. NVIDIA has a Dynamic Boost technology that will pump that by additional 15 Watts and max it out at 95 Watt SKU, which this laptop uses. The maximum boost clock frequency of these cards is 1695 MHz and 1740 MHz, for the RTX 3050 Ti and RTX 3050 GPUs respectively.

Lenovo Develops Radeon RX 6800 XT and RX 6900 XT LEGION Edition Graphics Cards

Lenovo and AMD seem to be developing an exclusive partnership with client/workstation products. Following exclusivity for Lenovo to sell workstations powered by the Ryzen Threadripper PRO processors, the two appear to be collaborating on graphics cards. Pictures surfaced on Chinese social media of the new Lenovo Radeon RX 6800 XT and RX 6900 XT LEGION Edition graphics cards. At this point it's unclear whether Lenovo designed these cards, or if the designers of AMD's reference MBA (made by AMD) graphics cards lent a hand.

Looking at the red-illuminated "R" cornerstone design element, the possibility of the card being designed and made by the same OEM as reference-design MBA cards, cannot be ruled out. Use of the "R" cornerstone dates back to the Radeon RX Vega series. The typeface of the "R" has since been updated to match with the latest Radeon logo. Elsewhere across the card, we see a large "Radeon RX 6x00 XT" logo along the top of the card, which is RGB illuminated. The butch triple-slot card appears to be slightly larger than the RX 6800 XT / RX 6900 XT reference-design, pulling power from a pair of 8-pin PCIe power connectors. Along the metal back-plate we see a large, illuminated logo of LEGION, Lenovo's gaming PC marquee. Below are screengrabs from the animation, watch the animated GIF in the source link below. At this point we don't know if this card is China-exclusive, and exactly how it's marketed, whether it's sold standalone like any AIB retail card, or whether it's pre-installed on LEGION PCs, such as the 2021 LEGION 7000P desktops.

Shipped Pre-built PC Systems See 13% Rise in Sales in 2020 Compared to 2019

The International Data Corporation (IDC) has revealed PC shipping growth numbers for 2020 - counting desktops, notebooks (including Chromebooks) and workstations (but excluding laptops and servers), and the results are clear. In a currently-pandemic world, and with the urge and necessity for teleworking efforts so as to reduce personal exposure to risk environments, we've seen an unprecedented demand for technological components. Whether in shortages for the latest "comfort" technologies such as dedicated graphics cards, latest-gen consoles, or even webcams, it's been clear that citizens of the world have been increasingly investing their money in technological devices. This need - either for work, for bridging social distances through the Internet, or for entertainment - has led the pre-built PC ecosystem shipments to increase as much as 13% in 2020 - and a global shipment number set at 302.6 million units.

This year-over-year (YoY) increase is bolstered, mainly, by rises in sales throughout Q4 of 2020, where global PC shipments achieved an outstanding 26% increase from Q4 2019 - in the fourth quarter of 2020 alone, 91.6 million units were shipped. In that particular quarter, Lenovo led the top three vendors with a 25.2% share of the sales, followed by HP (20.9%) and Dell (17.2%). Apple appears in fourth place with a mere 8% market share, but shows the strongest growth among the top 5 sellers, at 49.2% YoY - and that's with Apple's comparatively small product portfolio when put against any of the other top three vendors.

In 2021, Lenovo Legion brings consumers even more savage gaming performance with innovations in hardware and software. These new Lenovo Legion laptops are expertly-crafted with intelligent Lenovo Legion Coldfront 3.0 thermals for an increased airflow of up to 18 percent gen-to-gen to better manage the heat and noise generated by all that raw processing power. Lower system temperatures allow for optimized performance and all-day mobility with a long-lasting battery life. Multiple sensors are placed on the CPU, GPU, rear and side thermal vents, as well as on the SSD memory card and palm rest to fire off information every nanosecond to predict your system's thermal curve for hours of gaming with zero throttling. To further dissipate heat, we've expanded the copper heat sink system for up to 82 percent more thermal fin area gen-to-gen and drilled copious holes into the laptop's bottom cover and even under the keyboard to keep things cooler. So put this new Lenovo Legion's gaming hardware through its paces, it's built to take it.

AMD WRX80 Threadripper PRO Platform Breaks From OEM Shackles, ASUS WS WRX80 SAGE Spotted

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3000 PRO line of ultra high-end processors with 8-channel DDR4 memory and 128-lane PCI-Express were a bit of a nothingburger for the DIY PC community as AMD made it exclusive to Lenovo for its ThinkStation P620 pre-built workstations. The hope for Threadripper PRO hitting the DIY scene increased in December 2020, with GIGABYTE unveiling a the WRX80 SU8, a motherboard sold in the open market, albeit designed mainly for servers and not workstations that are loaded with I/O. ASUS is about to change this.

Here's the first picture of the ASUS WS WRX80 SAGE, a no-holes-barred workstation motherboard based on the AMD WRX80 chipset, supporting Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3000 series processors. This board wires out each of the processor's eight memory channels to its own DIMM slot (1 DIMM per channel), and spreads the processor's lavish PCIe 4.0 lane budget among seven PCI-Express 4.0 x16 slots, three onboard (and possibly four by AIC) M.2 NVMe slots, a pair of U.2 NVMe slots, and I/O that very likely includes a pair of 10 GbE connections. Getting the board is the easy part. You'll need to hunt down a Ryzen Threadripper PRO sWRX80 processor, and a PSU that can feed the board's three 8-pin EPS, and two 6-pin PCIe, besides the 24-pin ATX.
