LG Display Said to Start Producing 27-Inch W-OLED Panels This Month

Due to a slowdown in demand for W-OLED TVs, LG Display is said to be kicking off production of 27-inch W-OLED panels later this month, assuming everything goes to plan. This is admittedly based on rumours from Chinese site WeiXin QQ, so it should be taken with some caution. The site claims that the news comes via the Korean media, but we haven't managed to find a Korean source that could corroborate such a claim. The report is quite thin on details, so it's unknown what resolution these 27-inch panels will offer. Apparently 32-inch panels are also an option, as well as 40-inch panels for TVs.

The first customer for the 27-inch panels is unsurprisingly said to be LG Electronics, who is expected to launch a 27-inch gaming monitor based on the W-OLED panel sometime in early 2023. In related news, LG Display is betting on an improvement in the OLED TV market space in 2023, with the company said to be planning to manufacture no less than 9.2 million large sized OLED panels next year. Samsung is also said to be considering using LG Display's W-OLED panels in some of its products next year, but this has been a long time rumour that has not come to fruition so far.

Gaming Monitor Market Faces Inaugural Downturn with 2022 Shipments Downgraded to 20.5 Million Units

According to the latest TrendForce research, shipments of gaming monitors are in decline for the first time since the product category was launched to market, with 2022 estimates lowered to 20.5 million units, a 10% drop YoY. The primary reasons for this downgrade are intensifying inflation in Europe and spiking interest rates in North America which have upset and displaced demand for consumer electronics products. In addition, delays in launching high-end graphics cards has also led some e-sports consumers to consider postponing purchases.

According to TrendForce, judging from the market share of flat and curved gaming monitors, curved gaming surfaces accounted for approximately 41% of the market in 2021. In 2022, this share will increase to 44% and is expected to have a chance to reach 46% in 2023. In addition to an increased supply of curved monitor panels and their high price-performance ratio, growth in the market share of Ultra-Wide products is also one of the reasons for the rise of curved products.

Alienware Announces 24.5-Inch 1080p 360 Hz and 27-Inch 1440p 280 Hz Monitors

Dell has launched a pair of new gaming focused displays under its Alienware badge and both are high refresh rate monitors. The 25-inch (or rather 24.5-inch) model goes under the model name AW2523HF and has a 1080p panel with a 360 Hz refresh rate. It supports Freesync Premium and it also supports VESA AdaptiveSync. It's said to have a 400 nits peak brightness fast IPS panel that has a colour gamut that covers 99 percent of the sRGB spectrum. Inputs consist of one DP 1.4 and two HDMI 2.0 ports, as well as a USB-B 3.0 input and four USB-A 3.0 outputs

The 27-inch model is called the AW2723DF and it sports 1440p resolution and here we're looking at a fast nano IPS panel that has a native 240 Hz refresh rate, but it can be pushed up to 280 Hz using an overclocking option. It supports FreeSync Premium, G-sync Compatible and AdaptiveSync, so here all your bases are covered regardless of which GPU you hook it up to. It's also an HDR 600 display with a typical peak brightness of 450 cd/m² and it has a wider colour gamut that supports 95 percent of the DCI-P3 spectrum. This is still an edge lit display, so don't expect amazing HDR performance. Connectivity is the same as for the AW2523HF, although it's said to support Picture-by-Picture and Picture-in-Picture, which the 25-inch model apparently doesn't. The AW2523HF will be available in early September for $450, while the AW2723DF will launch in early October for $650.

ASRock is Expected to Launch Multiple Gaming Monitors

Several new ASRock products have passed through the KCC, which is the Korean equivalent of the FCC and normally this would be a new motherboard or maybe some small form factor system, but surprisingly enough, we're looking at gaming monitors. The leak comes courtesy of @momomo_us who's dug up a lot of juicy details on two of the models, whereas we only know the basic specs for the other models. First up, we have the PG34WQ15R, which is a 34-inch curved VA display with a 3440x1440 resolution. It supports FreeSync Premium and has a refresh rate range of 48 to 165 Hz over DisplayPort and 48-100 Hz over HDMI, which seems to be an HDMI 1.4 limitation. The next model is the PG27FF, which is a regular 1080p IPS display that also supports FreeSync Premium, here with a refresh rate range of 48 to 165 Hz over both DP and HDMI. There appears to be multiple sub SKUs of this model, but all start with PG27F.

Then we have the PG32QF, which should be a flat 32-inch display, with unknown specs, but the Q in the model name suggests that it's a 1440p monitor. Finally we have the PG42U, where the U in the model name suggests it's a 4K 42-inch display. The stand looks nearly identical to the one ASUS uses for its ROG Strix XG43UQ 4K screen and the specs are likely to be quite similar too, which means we might see support for 144 Hz or higher refresh rates. All four displays are manufactured by TPV Technology, which produces its own monitors under the AOC, Envision and Philips brands. It's unknown when these new monitors from ASRock will launch, but considering they've passed through certification, it's highly likely that they'll turn up sometime later this year.

LCD Monitor Demand Continues to Weaken in 2H22, Annual Shipments at Only 139.9 Million Units, Says TrendForce

According to TrendForce research, global LCD monitor shipments reached 72.3 million units in 1H22, a level on par with to the same period in 2021. Certain whole devices orders in 4Q21 were deferred to 1Q22 due to logistics and transportation issues. In addition, some brands felt optimistic regarding the outlook for 2022, so they initiated aggressive promotions to stimulate sales in 1Q22. Although the Russian-Ukrainian war and rising inflation have seriously impacted demand in the European consumer market since Q2, demand for business models is still positive, which in turn bridges the gap left by the consumer market.

Looking forward to LCD monitor market trends in 2H22, TrendForce indicates, since most orders for business models had been digested by the end of 2Q22, coupled with the sluggishness of new orders, overall business demand momentum has not been as good as in 1H22. Consumer models are affected by rising inflation and interest rate hikes in the United States and market consumption continues in lethargy. LCD monitor shipments are expected to decrease by 5.4% and 2.4% QoQ in 3Q22 and 4Q22, respectively. The proportion of shipments in the first and second half of the year will fall at approximately 51.7: 48.3.

Redmagic Launches 27-inch Mini LED 160 Hz 4K Gaming Monitor with mmWave Support

Redmagic, a sub-brand of Nubia Technology and a company that is mainly known for its phones with a gaming focus, has announced its first PC accessories, namely two computer monitors, as well as a gaming keyboard and a gaming mouse. The most interesting product in the lineup is the high-end 27-inch display, as not only is it a 4K monitor with a fast IPS panel with a 160 Hz refresh rate, but it also sports Mini LED backlight with 1152 FALD zones. Redmagic claims the display delivers 99 percent of the sRGB, Adobe RGB and the DCI-P3 colour gamut, which seems a bit odd, as these values are usually never that close to each other. It's said to be DisplayHDR 1000 certified and using ultra-high frequency PWM backlight dimming, to reduce any kind of flicker from the backlight dimming.

More gaming specific features include the typical 1 ms response time, support for Freesync and G-Sync. The inputs consist of two HDMI 2.1 ports, one DP 1.4 and one USB-C port with 90 W USB-PD support. A version of the display comes with a mmWave add-on unit, for connecting mobile devices wirelessly to the display and Redmagic claims a mere 1.7 ms input lag using mmWave to connect to the display. The company didn't specify which standard that was being used, so it could be something proprietary that only works with its phones. Redmagic also announced a fairly typical 2560 x 1440 screen, although it too uses a fast IPS panel and has a refresh rate of 240 Hz, but it lacks the FALD and is only HDR 400 certified and lacks HDMI 2.1 inputs, whereas most of the remaining features remain somewhat similar. No pricing was announced and it's not clear if any of the products will be available outside of the PRC, where the products launch in September.

LCD Monitor Panel shipments Forecast to Drop 11.3% QoQ in 2Q22 with Weak Demand Continuing into 2H22, Says TrendForce

According to TrendForce research, terminal demand remains weak due to repercussions of the Russian-Ukrainian war, rising inflation, and China's pandemic lockdowns as monitor brands began to reduce purchasing of LCD monitor panels in 2Q22. LCD monitors panel shipments in 2Q22 are estimated at 42.5 million units, down 11.3% QoQ. According to TrendForce analysis, monitor brands set fairly high shipment targets in early 2022. Coupled with the impact of LCD monitor panel shortages in 2021, monitor brands gravitated towards overbuying panels in 1Q22 to prepare for ensuing shipments. Driven by strong demand from monitor brands, shipments of LCD monitor panels reached 47.9 million units in 1Q22, up 20% YoY, the highest level for the period since 2012.

However, due to changes in the international political and economic landscape in February this year, the market for consumer models has cooled and monitor brands have successively revised their LCD monitor shipment targets downward and simultaneously lowered their panel purchase volumes. In the face of interest rate hikes by the world's major central banks and slowing economic growth, companies have also begun exercising caution in terms of capital expenditures, which has slowed demand for business-grade LCD monitors. In the past, inventory issues emerged and the overall market became oversupplied when monitor brands overstocked as consumer and business demand gradually cooled.
