NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 6GB Formally Launched

NVIDIA today formally launched the GeForce RTX 3050 6 GB as its new entry-level discrete GPU. The RTX 3050 6 GB is a significantly different product from the original RTX 3050 that the company launched as a mid-range product way back in January 2022. The RTX 3050 had originally launched on the 8 nm GA106 silicon, with 2,560 CUDA cores, 80 Tensor cores, 20 RT cores, 80 TMUs, and 32 ROPs; with 8 GB of 14 Gbps GDDR6 memory across a 128-bit memory bus; these specs also matched the maximum core-configuration of the smaller GA107 silicon, and so the company launched the RTX 3050 based on GA107 toward the end of 2022, with no change in specs, but a slight improvement in energy efficiency from the switch to the smaller silicon. The new RTX 3060 6 GB is based on the same GA107 silicon, but with significant changes.

To begin with, the most obvious change is memory. The new SKU features 6 GB of 14 Gbps GDDR6, across a narrower 96-bit memory bus, for 168 GB/s of memory bandwidth. That's not all, the GPU is significantly cut down, with just 16 SM instead of the 20 found on the original RTX 3050. This works out to 2,048 CUDA cores, 64 Tensor cores, 16 RT cores, 64 TMUs, and an unchanged 32 ROPs. The GPU comes with lower clock speeds of 1470 MHz boost, compared to 1777 MHz on the original RTX 3050. The silver lining with this SKU is its total graphics power (TGP) of just 70 W, which means that cards can completely do away with power connectors, and rely entirely on PCIe slot power. NVIDIA hasn't listed its own MSRP for this SKU, but last we heard, it was supposed to go for $179, and square off against the likes of the Intel Arc A580.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER Starts Selling at $999

NVIDIA today launched the third and final high-end GPU in its GeForce RTX 40-series SUPER refresh. The new GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER is being launched at an attractive $999 price, compared to the $1,199 that the RTX 4080 originally launched at. Besides this huge 20% cut in pricing, there's also more performance on offer, as the company chose to max out the 5 nm AD103 silicon that it's based on. If you recall, the RTX 4080 has 76 out of 80 streaming multiprocessors of the AD103 enabled, and its memory runs at an odd 22.4 Gbps speed. The RTX 4080 SUPER gets all 80 SM, and a well rounded 23 Gbps memory speed.

With 80 SM on tap, you get 10,240 CUDA cores, 320 Tensor cores, 80 RT cores, 320 TMUs, and 112 ROPs. The memory size is unchanged at 16 GB, across the 256-bit wide memory interface of the AD103; as is the total graphics power (TGP), at 320 W. All cards will include an NVIDIA-designed adapter that converts three 8-pin PCIe power connectors into a 12VHPWR that's capable of delivering 450 W of power. The target audience for this card is the same as that of the RTX 4080—maxed out 4K Ultra HD gaming with ray tracing. At $999, the RTX 4080 SUPER allows NVIDIA to better compete with the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX that's sometimes spotted for prices as low as $900. NVIDIA Faces AI Chip Shortages, Turns to Intel for Advanced Packaging Services

NVIDIA's supply of AI chips remains tight due to insufficient advanced packaging production capacity from key partner TSMC. As per the UDN report, NVIDIA will add Intel as a provider of advanced packaging services to help ease the constraints. Intel is expected to start supplying NVIDIA with a monthly advanced packaging capacity of about 5,000 units in Q2 at the earliest. While TSMC will remain NVIDIA's primary packaging partner, Intel's participation significantly boosts NVIDIA's total production capacity by nearly 10%. Even after Intel comes online, TSMC will still account for the lion's share—about 90% of NVIDIA's advanced packaging needs. TSMC is also aggressively expanding capacity, with monthly production expected to reach nearly 50,000 units in Q1, a 25% increase over December 2023. Intel has advanced packaging facilities in the U.S. and is expanding its capacity in Penang. The company has an open model, allowing customers to leverage its packaging solutions separately.

The AI chip shortages stemmed from insufficient advanced packaging capacity, tight HBM3 memory supply, and overordering by some cloud providers. These constraints are now easing faster than anticipated. The additional supply will benefit AI server providers like Quanta, Inventec and GIGABYTE. Quanta stated that the demand for AI servers remains robust, with the main limitation being chip supply. Both Inventec and GIGABYTE expect strong AI server shipment growth this year as supply issues resolve. The ramping capacity from TSMC and Intel in advanced packaging and improvements upstream suggest the AI supply crunch may be loosening. This would allow cloud service providers to continue the rapid deployment of AI workloads.

MSI GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER 16G EXPERT Specs Leaked

MSI presented a massive table of GeForce RTX 40 SUPER series custom design graphics cards at CES 2024—TPU spent a lot of time photographing and documenting everything GPU-related at the tech company's booth. The kind-of mysterious GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER 16G EXPERT model seemed to get a lot of attention from online PC hardware communities. The brand new and very substantial EXPERT shroud design integrates a Zero Frozr cooling solution, but folks were quick to link its aesthetic (and vapor chamber setup) to NVIDIA's dual fan Founders Edition cooling solution. MSI has not yet published a dedicated GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER 16G EXPERT product page, while all of the other models from CES are uploaded and active.

A tipster on social media has posted a screenshot of the 16G EXPERT's specification sheet—wxnod has uncovered alleged factory settings ahead of review and launch day embargos, although pricing is still unknown at the time of writing. The leaked core figures include a boost clock of 2610 MHz in GAMING and SILENT modes (60 MHz above reference), while the MSI Center software suite can activate an Extreme Performance mode: 2625 MHz. These figures align with the SUPER SUPRIM model's core clock specs—the SUPRIM X sits above everything else as the fastest card in MSI's RTX 4080 SUPER stable. MSI's official introduction stated that the 16G EXPERT: "features a push-pull airflow design for enhanced cooling efficiency. The enclosure is constructed with aluminium Die-Casting for structural strength, while Core Pipe and a Vapor Chamber work to efficiently dissipate heat. Lastly, a patented fan design provides quiet yet reliable airflow." We hope to see the MSI GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER 16G EXPERT's addition to the TPU GPU database.

GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER & 4070 Ti SUPER Cards Shipped Out Prematurely

A whole bunch of custom GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER and 4070 Ti SUPER graphics card models were available to purchase via online retail outlets last week—several ZOTAC options were available on Amazon USA for a brief period over the weekend. Enthusiastic customers have jumped at the chance to acquire potent Ada Lovelace SUPER cards ahead of NVIDIA's official review embargo and launch dates—TPU's resident GPU Judge has just published his first set of GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER evaluations. An early example was documented on the /NVIDIA community subreddit—user "LightMoisture" provided evidence of his PNY RTX 4070 Ti VERTO Triple Fan purchase arriving two days before the sanctioned release date (January 24).

It is not too surprising to see retailers ship out pre-ordered products a tad prematurely (given delivery lead times), but intriguing posts on social media have been highlighted by VideoCardz. A very fortunate soul has received an ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 4080 SUPER OC graphics card, well in advance of Team Green's preferred January 31 launch day. The plucky owner has asked around for functioning drivers (good luck)—LightMoisture also ran into this issue with his PNY RTX 4070 Ti VERTO. The next public GeForce Driver release (551.15) is due tomorrow, with (presumed) support for GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER GPUs. LightMoisture's evidence included screenshots of the aforementioned PNY card's crendentials being displayed in TechPowerUp GPU-Z v2.57.0, and test results generated by Maxon's Cinebench 2024 suite.

Jensen Huang Heads to Taiwan, B100 "Blackwell" GPUs Reportedly in Focus

NVIDIA's intrepid CEO, Jensen Huang, has spent a fair chunk of January travelling around China—news outlets believe that Team Green's leader has conducted business meetings with very important clients in the region. Insiders proposed that his low-profile business trip included visits to NVIDIA operations in Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing. The latest updates allege that a stopover in Taiwan was also planned, following the conclusion of Mainland activities. Photos from an NVIDIA Chinese new year celebratory event have been spreading across the internet lately—many were surprised to see Huang appear on-stage in Shanghai and quickly dispense with his trademark black leather jacket. He swapped into a colorful "Year of the Wood Dragon" sleeveless shirt for a traditional dance routine.

It was not all fun and games during Huang's first trip to China in four years—inside sources have informed the Wall Street Journey about growing unrest within the nation's top ranked Cloud AI tech firms. Anonymous informants allege that leadership, at Alibaba Group and Tencent, are not happy with NVIDIA's selection of compromised enterprise GPUs—it is posited that NVIDIA's President has spent time convincing key clients to not adopt natively-developed solutions (unaffected by US Sanctions). The short hop over to Taiwan is reported not to be for R&R purposes—insiders had Huang's visiting key supply partners; TSMC and Wistron. Industry experts think that these meetings are linked to NVIDIA's upcoming "Blackwell" B100 AI GPU, and "supercharged" H200 "Hopper" accelerator. It is too early for the rumor mill to start speculation about nerfed versions of NVIDIA's 2024 enterprise products reaching Chinese shores, but Jensen Huang is seemingly ready to hold diplomatic talks with all sides.
