Total War: Pharaoh - Canaanite Faction Deep Dive

INTRODUCING THE CANAANITE FACTIONS—Canaan is a region ravaged by wars waged by the larger empires bordering its north and south. However, while often disregarded by Hatti and Egypt, it's best not to underestimate the peoples of Canaan. Be it the humble diplomat or the great raider, a Canaan leader will rise from the embers of both Hatti and Egypt - be it through subterfuge or by further fanning the flames of war. Today, we're taking a look at the two playable Canaanite factions in Total War: PHARAOH. Please note that the game is still in development, and certain things may yet change between now and release.

THE CONTRASTING FIGURES OF IRSU AND BAY PROVIDE VERY DIFFERENT VISIONS FOR THE FUTURE OF EGYPT
Canaan's two leaders could hardly be more different from one another. Starting out in Retjenu, Irsu has no interest in ruling. Instead he yearns only to acquire. Be it resources, money or conflict - if you have something he wants, he will take it. Society's downfall is of no concern to him - he will continue to raze and loot regardless. A prize fighter who brings heavyweight champions to their knees, to most his arrival heralds an oncoming apocalypse.

We hope you've printed out your lawyer-approved special dispensation form to explain your mysterious absence from work on August 3rd to your boss, because there are only two days to go before release. After six years in the making, Baldur's Gate 3's PC launch is right around the corner and we couldn't have gotten here without you. So let's have one last Community Update before then to wrap things up, answer some of your biggest questions, and reveal a few final surprises before you finally get stuck in.

Launch Day
So just how big is this game, anyhow? What time should you expect the game to release? And where did I put my keys? The answers to most of these questions can be found below.

Baldur's Gate 3 "illithid" Ability System Explained

A seasoned wizard who infects her foes with the irresistible urge to dance. A high-level sorcerer who sows the seeds of chaos in battle with strategically placed portals. A bard that wields the psionic powers of a mindflayer (a.k.a illithid). Who will you become at the pinnacle of your power in Baldur's Gate 3? That's completely up to you. In Baldur's Gate 3, your late-game build can be as varied as you want it to be and can be changed at any time, giving you an opportunity to experiment with different spells and discover the class that complements your playstyle best.

Introducing illithid powers
In Baldur's Gate 3, you and your companions each carry the burden of a parasite that dwells within you, a tadpole placed deep inside your brain that poses a constant looming threat of illithid transformation. But as dangerous as these creatures may be, they are also a source of great power. For those who wish to experience their power, you need only to surrender to the tadpole within you and consume the parasites you find in jars and skulls throughout the Forgotten Realms.

Unreal Engine 5.3 Preview Out Now

Yesterday, Epic Games released a preview version of Unreal Engine 5.3—users can now try out the latest batch of improvements, as well as some new features. Epic's blurb Lumen boasts that their software engineers have refined "the workflows and capabilities of core features"—namely Nanite, and Path Tracing. Optimizations have resulted in "more control over performance" and overall better-looking visuals. Epic's own Fortnite, Layers of Fear (Bloober Team) and Remnant 2 (Gunfire Games) are the only currently released games running on Unreal Engine 5. Epic first showcased this technology back in 2020, with plenty of game development studios signing up to use it—but they have been slow in adapting to the feature-rich engine. In Remnant 2's case, Gunfire chose to not implement Lumen at launch.

Newly introduced experimental features include an upgraded particle rendering system—users are granted access to tool that can "create volumetrics such as smoke and fire directly inside Unreal." Epic's notes also mention that a Skeletal Editor has been added, for in-engine character weight and skinning work. Preview version 5.3 grants full support for Orthographic Rendering—useful in the fields of "architecture plus manufacturing visualizations, and stylistic games projects." Users will also see improvements in the Panel Cloth Editor and ML Cloth simulation system.

Xbox Wire Puts the Spotlight on Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon

Attacking the massive Juggernaut mech's exposed engine manifold was proving to be an impossible task. It wasn't that the Reverse Joint Legs I equipped weren't nimble enough to glide away from their flurry of missiles; they were more than capable. And it wasn't that my dual machineguns and missile launchers were a poor choice heading into this boss battle—they certainly helped me carve a path through the enemy-filled fortress earlier. But its pairing was not the most efficient mixture to hit the Juggernaut where it hurt: from behind.

Despite its colossal size and massive tank-like treads, the "Jug" could turn on a dime while keeping its armored chest between my weapons and its weak spot. It wasn't long until the battle turned into an effort in futility. With my ammunition depleted, I was forced to retreat to the mech Assembly and build a new Armored Core to try again. Despite this challenge during a recent hands-on session with FromSoftware's upcoming Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon, the boss battle was a perfect showcase of the game's captivating and inherent difficulty - you'll be given all the tools to succeed, but it'll be up to you to find the best combination of weapons to components that match your style of play and crack the obstacle(s) that stands in your way.

Intel Previews AVX10 ISA, Next-Gen E-Cores to get AVX-512 Capabilities

Intel has published a preview article covering its new AVX10 ISA (Instruction Set Architecture)—the announcement reveals that both P-Cores & E-Cores (on next-gen processors) will be getting support for AVX-512. Team Blue stated: "Intel AVX10 represents a major shift to supporting a high-performance vector ISA across future Intel processors. It allows the developer to maintain a single code-path that achieves high performance across all Intel platforms with the minimum of overhead checking for feature support. Future development of the Intel AVX10 ISA will continue to provide a rich, flexible, and consistent environment that optimally supports both Server and Client products."

Due to technical issues (E-core related), Intel decided to disable AVX-512 for Alder Lake and Raptor Lake client-oriented CPU lineups. AMD has recently adopted the fairly new instruction set for its Ryzen 7040 mobile series, so it is no wonder that Team Blue is attempting to reintroduce it in the near future—AVX-512 was last seen working properly on Rocket and Tiger Lake chips. AVX10 implementation is expected to debut with Granite Rapids (according to Longhorn), and VideoCardz reckons that Intel will get advanced instructions for Efficiency cores working with its Clearwater Forest CPU architecture.

Combining FromSoftware's longstanding expertise in mech games with their signature action gameplay, ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICON brings a brand-new action experience to the series. A new game based on the concept of the ARMORED CORE series that uses the knowledge gained from FromSoftware's recent action game development.

Amnesia: The Bunker Launches Tomorrow, Frictional Games Explains Design Process

Frictional Games details how you'll keep yourself alive and out of danger in this new take on the horror series. Thomas Grip, Creative Director states: "When we first started with game creation at Frictional Games, we knew we wanted to make immersive horror experiences. We threw in everything we could think of: puzzles, physics, combat, creepy dream sequences - you name it. Those of you who played Penumbra: Overture will remember these elements well. Now, as we approach the launch of Amnesia: The Bunker - out on June 6 - we wanted to take a look back at how we've further refined our formula and approach to games.

The real breakthrough arrived with Amnesia: The Dark Descent. We started focusing on key aspects that led to a much more engaging experience. We cut away combat and all other aspects that didn't directly fuel the horror experience. This led to players noticing more about their environment and becoming more deeply engaged. A simple sound effect, for instance, could trigger intense reactions, causing players to run and hide. Players become immersed with the happenings in a way we hadn't seen before."
