MSI Presents Lots of Custom GeForce RTX 40 SUPER Designs at CES

MSI has fielded a plethora of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 SUPER Series custom designed graphics cards at CES 2024—TPU staffers had their work cut out when documenting and taking photos of the many options on display. As announced on Monday, MSI is introducing a wide range of SUPER cards—in SUPRIM, EXPERT, GAMING TRIO, GAMING SLIM and VENTUS flavors. We were unable to track down a couple of these models, but the absence of SUPRIM and GAMING TRIO cards at CES was a relatively minor thing when exploring everything else positioned on MSI's extended table.

First up is the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER 16G GAMING X SLIM model, available in standard black or white. Despite the "SLIM" moniker, this topflight SUPER model is still a substantial prospect in terms of dimensions (refer to the photos below)—it houses MSI's trusty TRI FROZR 3 thermal system and a triple TORX FAN 5.0 array. We also see the very intriguing new GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER 16G EXPERT model—PC enthusiast community members had their interests piqued by a recently previewed design that echoes NVIDIA's Founders Edition aesthetic, albeit with a quirkier spin.

NVIDIA Announces the GeForce RTX 40 SUPER Series Graphics Cards

NVIDIA today gave its GeForce RTX 40-series "Ada" a midlife refresh targeting the higher end of its product stack, with the new GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER, GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, and the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER. The new RTX 4080 SUPER replaces the current RTX 4080, which will gradually be phased out of the market. The new RTX 4070 Ti SUPER does the same to the current RTX 4070 Ti. The RTX 4070 SUPER, however, will coexist with the current RTX 4070, albeit at a slight price premium. The RTX 4070 SUPER and RTX 4070 Ti SUPER are both being recommended by NVIDIA for maxed out 1440p gaming with full ray tracing; while the RTX 4080 SUPER is for those who want to max out gameplay at 4K with full ray tracing. The RTX 4070 SUPER and RTX 4070 Ti SUPER should still very much be capable of 4K gaming and more than acceptable frame rates, especially given the latest DLSS 3 Frame Generation and its proliferation among new AAA titles.

NVIDIA is giving the three new graphics card SKUs a staggered launch spread across January 2024. The RTX 4070 SUPER should be available to purchase on January 17, at a starting price of $599, which was the original MSRP of the RTX 4070. After this launch, the RTX 4070 slides down a bit to $549 while remaining in the product stack. Things get interesting higher up the stack. The RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, which goes on sale on January 24, is priced at $799, while the current RTX 4070 Ti is being retired from the product stack. The remaining RTX 4070 Ti cards should be up at slightly discounted prices.

NVIDIA Teases GeForce RTX 40-series SUPER for CES Unveiling

The Twitter handle of NVIDIA GeForce just updated its header picture, with that seems to us like the silhouette of its upcoming GeForce RTX 40-series SUPER graphics card. NVIDIA is expected to debut three new high-end graphics card SKUs at its CES event on January 8, with reviews and product availability of the three expected to go live in the following weeks. The lineup includes the RTX 4070 SUPER, the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, and the RTX 4080 SUPER. Market availability of the three, according to older reports, pin them at January 17 for the RTX 4070 SUPER, January 24 for the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, and January 31 for the RTX 4080 SUPER.

NVIDIA RTX 4080 SUPER Sticks with AD103 Silicon, 16GB of 256-bit Memory

Recent placeholder listings of unreleased MSI RTX 40-series SUPER graphics cards seem to confirm that the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is getting 16 GB of memory, likely across a 256-bit memory interface, as NVIDIA is tapping into the larger "AD103" silicon to create it. The company had maxed out the "AD104" silicon with the current RTX 4070 Ti. What's also interesting is that they point to the RTX 4080 SUPER having the same 16 GB of 256-bit memory as the RTX 4080. NVIDIA carved the current RTX 4080 out of the "AD103" by enabling 76 out of 80 SM (38 out of 40 TPCs). So it will be interesting to see if NVIDIA manages to achieve the performance goals of the RTX 4080 SUPER by simply giving it 512 more CUDA cores (from 9,728 to 10,240). The three other levers NVIDIA has at its disposal are GPU clocks, power limits, and memory speeds. The RTX 4080 uses 22.4 Gbps memory speed, which it can increase to 23 Gbps.

The current RTX 4080 has a TGP of 320 W, compared to the 450 W of the AD102-based RTX 4090, and RTX 4080 cards tend to include an NVIDIA-designed adapter that converts three 8-pin PCIe connectors to a 12VHPWR with signal pins denoting 450 W continuous power capability. In comparison, RTX 4090 cards include a 600 W capable adapter with four 8-pin inputs. Even with the 450 W capable adapter, NVIDIA has plenty of room to raise the TGP of the RTX 4080 SUPER up from the 320 W of the older RTX 4080, to increase GPU clocks besides maxing out the "AD103" silicon. NVIDIA is expected to announce the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER and RTX 4080 SUPER on January 8, with the RTX 4080 SUPER scheduled to go on sale toward the end of January.

Various MSI RTX 40-series SUPER Graphics Cards Get Placeholder Listings with E-Tailers

Unreleased MSI GeForce RTX 40-series SUPER graphics cards are beginning to show up on European online retailers, VideoCardz reports. These are placeholder listings, meaning that they're just there to feed the spiders and get customers to check back for pre-orders. A Swiss retailer has the MSI GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER listed at prices ranging between 1,230 CHF ($1,465) for the cheapest Ventus 3X model, and 1,355 CHF ($1,613) for the most premium SUPRIM X model. These prices are inclusive of 18% taxes, which points to the likelihood that the RTX 4080 SUPER has an NVIDIA MSRP of approximately $1,200, displacing the current RTX 4080 from its launch MSRP. The RTX 4080 can be occasionally seen listed for as low as $1,180.

Meanwhile, the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is seeing its prices range from 992 CHF ($1,180, including taxes) for the cheapest model to 1,063 CHF ($1,265), pointing to the possibility of a $950 MSRP. This SKU might not displace the current RTX 4070 Ti from its $800 MSRP, with street prices starting at $790. Lastly, there's the RTX 4070 SUPER, starting at 777 CHF ($924) including taxes for the cheapest model, and 848 CHF ($1009) for the priciest one, which points to the likelihood of a $700 MSRP, which again, doesn't seem to be displacing the RTX 4070 from its $600 starting price. Again, placeholder prices tend to be wildly off the mark, and we'll only know what's on NVIDIA's mind on January 8, when it announces the three in its CES presentation.

NVIDIA to Address 2024 International CES on January 8, Possibly Announce SUPER

NVIDIA confirmed that it will address the 2024 International CES on January 8, at 8 am PT. This aligns perfectly with reports that the company is planning to refresh its GeForce RTX 40 series with the introduction of three new high-end graphics card SKUs, namely the RTX 4070 SUPER, RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, and the RTX 4080 SUPER. The three are expected to be announced in this address, with product launches across the following three weeks. NVIDIA might not confine its CES spotlight to GeForce RTX, and we can expect some action even in the data-center front, given that 2024 might see the company debut its "Blackwell" architecture. In the meantime, head over to the NVIDIA YouTube channel, where the stream's placeholder is up, and where you can set up a notification.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40-series SUPER: Review Schedule and Availability Confirmed

Last week, we got our first whiff of the availability dates of NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce RTX 40-series SUPER line of high-end graphics cards. A leaked NVIDIA launch schedule screengrab by VideoCardz confirms those dates, and sheds a bit more light on when you can expect previews, reviews, and what NVIDIA refers to these cards internally. The leaked document says that NVIDIA will indeed announce all three new SKUs, namely the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER, RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, and RTX 4070 SUPER; on January 8. This will very likely be at an NVIDIA GeForce RTX event along the sidelines of the 2024 International CES. On this day, you can also expect unboxing previews for the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER, which is the first of the three SKUs to go on sale.

NVIDIA is once again incentivizing its add-in card (AIC) partners to have cards available at MSRP on launch. On January 16, you can expect reviews of the MSRP priced RTX 4070 SUPER cards. A day later on January 17, publications are allowed to post reviews of RTX 4070 SUPER cards priced above the MSRP. January 17 will also be the day you can buy the RTX 4070 SUPER. A week later, on January 23, reviews of the MSRP-priced RTX 4070 Ti cards will post, followed by a January 24 product availability and above-MSRP card reviews. Winding things up are at-MSRP reviews of the RTX 4080 SUPER on January 30, followed by above-MSRP reviews and product availability on January 31. NVIDIA is internally referring to the RTX 4070 SUPER as "PG141-SKU 335," the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER as "PG141-SKU 323," and the RTX 4080 SUPER as the "PG139-SKU 355."

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER, RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, and RTX 4070 SUPER Release Dates Leaked

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40-series SUPER lineup is real, and is coming this January, Chinese tech site IT Home reports. The publication released the exact dates on which NVIDIA is announcing the series, along with their market availability dates. The lineup refreshes the higher end of the RTX 40-series, and consists of three SKUs—the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, and the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER.

According to the IT Home report, NVIDIA in a GeForce RTX event along the sidelines of the 2024 International CES, will announce all three SKUs on January 8. This will be followed by a January 17 release for the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER. This is when you'll be able to buy the card. A week later on January 24, the company will make the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER available. Wrapping things up will be the January 31 availability of the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER.

NVIDIA Plans 2024 CES (January) Launch for RTX 40-series SUPER?

NVIDIA is reportedly planning to time the launch of its GeForce RTX 40-series SUPER line of graphics cards with the 2024 International CES, scheduled for January. This is according to kopite7kimi, a reliable source with NVIDIA leaks. The company tends to plan special GeForce RTX gaming events along the sidelines of big trade-shows for new product launches.

The mid-life refresh of the RTX 40-series "Ada" will see the introduction of three new enthusiast-segment graphics card models without disturbing RTX 4090 as the series flagship. In the higher end of things, the company is planning to launch the RTX 4080 SUPER, which could push the performance envelope further above that of the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX, and possibly prepare for the upcoming RX 7950 XTX. The unusually named RTX 4070 Ti SUPER could be designed to consolidate at the $800 price-point against the RX 7900 XT. The new RTX 4070 SUPER, meanwhile, could be designed to fix the company's standing at the $600 mark by beating the RX 7800 XT.
Update 05:29 UTC: MEGAsizeGPU revealed the retail branding inserts for boxes, for the RTX 40-series SUPER family. NVIDIA has changed the SUPER logo, replacing a stylized typeface with the same bland sans-serif typeface it uses for the main GeForce RTX branding. It even confirms the existence of the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER (two brand extensions clumped together).

NVIDIA Readies GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER, RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, and RTX 4080 SUPER

NVIDIA is rumored to be working on a refresh of the higher end of its GeForce RTX 40-series "Ada" series, according to hongxing2020, a reliable source with NVIDIA leaks. The company could be bringing back the SUPER brand extension that it introduced with the RTX 20-series. As many as three SKUs are on the radar—GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER, GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, and the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER.

There is no word on when the company plans to release these, or what their specifications are, but we can certainly speculate. The current RTX 4080, while based on the AD103 silicon, doesn't max it out—it uses 76 out of 80 SM (streaming multiprocessors) available on the silicon, but we doubt if those extra 4 SM could drive up enough performance to make a whole new SKU, especially given that the 256-bit memory bus of the AD103 is maxed out. We predict that the RTX 4080 SUPER could be based on the larger AD102 silicon that physically has 144 SM that the current RTX 4090 uses 128 out of. NVIDIA has the opportunity to pick an SM count such as, say, 96. AD102 also has a wider 384-bit memory bus, giving NVIDIA the option of either giving the RTX 4080 SUPER the same 24 GB memory configuration as the RTX 4090, or even 20 GB, across a 320-bit memory bus.
