Noctua Announces Two AM4-compatible Low-profile Coolers

Noctua today presented two updates to its range of quiet low-profile CPU coolers. Successors to the award-winning NH-L9a and NH-L12, the new NH-L9a-AM4 and NH-L12S models now support the AM4 socket of AMD's Ryzen processors. Whereas the NH-L9a-AM4 stands a mere 37mm tall, which makes it ideal for use in compact HTPCs or Small Form Factor cases that offer minimum clearance for CPU coolers, the slightly bigger NH-L12S comes equipped with the new NF-A12x15 PWM fan and combines excellent compatibility, surprising efficiency and remarkable flexibility.

PowerColor Gaming Box External Graphics Enclosure Pictured

PowerColor showed off its Gaming Box external graphics enclosure, at the 2017 Computex. With dimensions that almost match a cubical SFF desktop (343 mm x 163 mm x 235 mm), the enclosure can hold a graphics card up to 32 cm long and up to 15.5 cm tall, with 2.5-slot (2-slot bracket). Powering the enclosure is a 550W internal PSU, with two 6+2 pin PCIe power connectors. A Thunderbolt 3 (40 Gbps) connection links the box to your notebook, PC, or NUC. Downstream connectivity includes a Thunderbolt 3 port, three USB 3.0 ports, and a 1 GbE wired network connection. The enclosure supports most current high-end graphics cards, such as the R9 Fury/Nano series, RX 400/500 series, GTX 10-series, and TITAN Xp.

Phanteks Showcases Their Unique EVOLV Shift, Shift X SFF Cases at Computex 2017

Two of the more unique mass-market designs on show on Computex 2017 have to be the Phanteks EVOLV Shift and Shift X SFF cases. These are the essence of a tower case (though they can also lie on their side like a roman citizen at dinner time, if you are so inclined.) These are aluminum and tempered-glass crafted cases, with a ridiculous 17 (W) x 27 (D) x 48 (H) cm footprint on the Shift. The Shift X is the taller solution of the two, with a 65 cm height. These little cases than could support water cooling and component placement in multiple orientations, and include an integrated RGB controller to boot.

The front I/O contains just two USB 3.0 ports, but it's the interior which shines. Phanteks managed to cram a lot into such a compact form-factor. Motherboards will have to be of the mini-ITX type, there's no way around that; however, there's also with support for 2x PCI slots, and the Shift X brings support for 2x internal 3.5" and 2x 2.5" drives (you can also mount 2.5" solutions on the 3.5" bays, mind you.) It also supports PS2 PSUs, while the smaller Shift has to cut one of the 3.5" bays, and only supports SFF PSUs. However, for their sizes, both Shifts support 3x 120 mm and 3x 140 mm fans on the front of the case, and 1x 120 mm, 1x 140 mm fans on the bottom. The EVOLV Shift will retail for $110, while the Shift X brings that number up to $160.

Sapphire to Launch External Graphics Enclosure - Powered by Thunderbolt 3

At its Computex 2017 showcase, Sapphire showcased (ahem) an upcoming e-GFX enclosure. The unit delivers its display signal through a Thunderbolt 3 port, which is being hailed as "The USB-C that does it all", with up to 40 Gb/s connections, dual 4K @ 60Hz support, charging capabilities, and support for the USB and DisplayPort interfaces.

The unit makes use of what appears to be a SFF PSU (it isn't clear whether or not a PSU comes bundled with the chassis), and space for a dual-slot high performance graphics card. The side of the enclosure presents an airflow-enabling grill, so that your graphics card can pull in fresh air from the exterior. There's also what seems to be an Ethernet port and 2x USB 3.0 ports, which means this enclosure can be used as a hub, or as an extra charger for your other pieces of tech. Aesthetics-wise, this unit uses the tried and true black and white contrast, with a black design language on the front and back, and a smooth white contour on the top and sides of the enclosure. I enjoy the understated design here, with no extremely hard and "gaming" screaming angles, and the neutral color scheme and LED design doesn't look half bad. It remains to be seen whether that blue LED lighting is too strong so as to be distracting, but if it's not, it stands as a good complement to the overall design. Expect this unit to be released sooner rather than later, though no details on pricing or specifications were at hand.

CRYORIG Releases the Taku Monitor Stand PC Case on Kickstarter

Remember the Taku Monitor Stand PC Case, that Cryorig showcased mid-2016? Well, it's now made its way to Kickstarter, a likely way for Cryorig to gauge interest in such a product whilst letting consumers foot part of the manufacturing bill. It's an interesting one, really - at least it's different from most other SFF PCs, though I've seen more compact designs. The press-release follows.

CRYORIG, the PC Cooling and peripherals innovator is releasing their first PC case project the Taku on crowdfunding website Kickstarter. The Taku, first announced and exhibited last summer, will also be shown during Computex 2017. The TAKU has been in development for over 2 years in house, with over 6 months of co-development with manufacturing partner Lian Li. The Taku Kickstarter campaign begins on May 29th and ends on July 28th. Besides offering backers the chance to be the first people to receive the Taku, backers are also offered multiple customization options only available on Kickstarter.

Introducing the Node: AKiTiO's Thunderbolt 3 eGFX Box

AKiTiO has introduced its new, Thunderbolt 3-powered external graphics box. Akin to Powercolor's Devil Box ($379), Razer's Core ($499) or ASUS' XG2, the AKiTiO Node is meant to house an external graphics card, delivering true discrete-graphics-class performance to your laptop, AIO or SFF PC. One thing the Node has going for it, though, is pricing: this eGFX Box comes in at only $299. At this price-point, the Node makes away with extra connectors found in some of its competitors, like Ethernet or USB 3.0, keeping it as simple and to-the-point as possible: the only port is for its Thunderbolt 3 connection.

The AKiTiO Node is 428mm long, 145 mm wide and 227 mm high, making it compatible with a variety of dual-slot, full-length AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards (up to 312 mm long, 170 mm high [with power cables] and 44 mm wide), and sports an upgradeable, integrated 400 W SFX PSU, as well as one 120 mm fan for extra cooling capability.

Lian-Li's PC-Q37 Brings Tempered Glass to Small Form Factor Builds

Lian-Li, the renowned Taiwanese computer case and accessories manufacturer, has announced immediate availability of their PC-Q37 computer case, a dual-chambered mini-ITX model with large tempered glass in the front and side panels. According to the company, this latest chassis fuses the best of the Q-series and O-series for a new standard in small form factor (SFF) PC cases.

The PC-Q37 is split into two compartments to make tidy builds a breeze. The main compartment mounts the motherboard, expansion cards and cooling equipment, while the back compartment hides the PSU and drive racks. This layout allows builders to highlight their best bits with oversized tempered glass, while effortlessly keeping wires and other unsightly components tucked away.

Shuttle Announces the XPC Nano NC02U SFF Desktop

Shuttle Computer Group, Inc., one of the world's leading designers of small form factor computers, today announced the upgrade to its XPC Nano line of barebone computers. The XPC NC02U Ultra Small Form Factor Series supports the latest Skylake-U platform technology. It has a new elegant, space saving design and can attach directly to a monitor with a standard VESA mount, for an uncluttered workspace or all-in-one commercial application.

"Like all of Shuttle's computers, the new NC02U can be custom configured, which sets us apart from many other computer manufacturers with competing products," said Marty Lash, director sales and marketing, Shuttle Computer Group. "And the ultra-small form factor design makes it perfect for integrators who work in digital signage, kiosks, POS, and the SOHO and SMB markets."

FSP Also Readies the Dagger Line of SFX PSUs

FSP is also giving finishing touches to its first SFX form-factor PSUs targeted at SFF gaming PC builds, with the Dagger series. These units feature fully modular cabling, with enough juice and straws for high-end CPU and graphics hardware. The series initially features 500W and 600W models, boasting of 80 Plus Gold efficiency ratings, DC-to-DC switching, and complies with the latest ATX v2.4 specifications. An 80 mm dual-bearing fan keeps the unit cool. The company will reveal more information, including tentative launch, at its 2016 Computex booth.

Lian Li Intros PC-O5SW Black-White Case

Lian Li introduced a black-white variant of its PC-O5SW case, featuring matte black interiors contrasting white aluminium exteriors, and a large, clear-acrylic window on its side panel. The SFF case has room for a mini-ITX motherboard, with risers wiring out four expansion slots along the plane of the motherboard (ideal for triple-slot graphics cards), a slimline optical drive, three 3.5-inch drive bays through a detachable drive rack, and two 2.5-inch bays behind the motherboard tray, which convert to one 3.5-inch bay.

An SFX PSU is needed to power your rig up. Ventilation includes two 120 mm top exhausts, and a 140 mm right side-panel fan. The case supports graphics cards with 19 cm length with the 3x 3.5-inch HDD rack in place, and up to 31 cm with it removed. PSUs as long as 140 mm are supported, and CPU coolers as tall as 85 mm. Measuring 384 mm x 465 mm x 148 mm (WxHxD), the case weighs 6.4 kg. Front-panel connectivity includes two USB 3.0 ports (standard header), and HDA jacks. The PCIe riser supports PCIe gen 3.0 standard.

SilverStone Announces Raven Z (RVZ01B-E) with Large PSU Room

SilverStone updated the design of its smash-hit SFF case, the Raven Z, to accommodate full-size (ATX) PSUs. The new RVZ01B-E from SilverStone measures 382 x 350 x 105 mm, weighing 3.7 kg, and features a standard ATX (PS/2) power supply bay. Bear in mind, though, that you're limited to 150 mm long PSUs. Some >1000W boxes may still not fit. SilverStone recommends that you choose a 140 mm long PSU, for greater flexibility in dealing with your cable ramen. The company didn't announce availability, although it's reportedly priced at US $79.99.

8Pack Asteroid SFF Gaming Desktop Now Available

The 8Pack Asteroid is the all-new extreme mini PC designed and built by Ian '8Pack' Parry, the world's renowned overclocker. The Asteroid is the fastest Mini-ITX gaming PC available on the market today, packed with high performance hardware that has been finely tuned by 8Pack. Ian Parry, or more well known by his alias 8Pack is the UK's number one benchmarking champion, holding multiple prestigious world records and winning some of the largest overclocking events globally.

The PC is supplied with a flight case as standard that has been manufactured for portability, allowing the user to also pack their peripherals with the PC. As standard, the PC has an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti overclocked to 1450 MHz+ combined with an Intel Core i7-6700K processor overclocked over 4.70 GHz. The memory is 8 GB overclocked to 3866 MHz followed by plenty of storage, a 512 GB SSD for the Operating System and a 1 TB SSD for files and games. All of the hardware is powered by a 1000W 80 Plus Titanium rated power supply from Super Flower.

Lian Li to Showcase Latest O and Q Series Cases at CeBIT 2016

Lian-Li Industrial Co. Ltd is pleased to announce that it will bring the latest O Series PC-O9, Q series PC-Q34, and new PC-J60 to CeBIT 2016. Lian Li would like to extend an invitation to all to visit its booth (Hall 17, Booth H24/1) to glimpse its exciting new products.

The O Series launched in 2014 and was lauded for its aesthetics - Lian Li's hallmark brushed aluminum combined with large tempered glass windows, allowing DIY enthusiasts to showcase their most elaborate builds. Like its predecessor, the PC-O8, the PC-O9 uses a larger form factor and incorporates big, beautiful glass panels, but is halved into two compartments: an all-glass area for showcasing hardware, and a more convention aluminum section for hiding cables, drives, and the power supply.

AMD Pushes for a Universal External Graphics Standard

AMD is working on a standardized external graphics solution for notebooks. This solution will allow people with ultra-thin notebooks to enjoy the mobility served up by frugal, mainstream hardware; as well as high-end gaming, with the graphics card plugged in at home. It also probably gives AMD greater control over design and cooling solutions. Unlike a mobile GPU that sits inside your notebook, and makes it bulky due to additional cooling and power requirements, an external graphics card sits on your desk, sipping on wall socket power.

AMD's external graphics solution isn't necessarily an AMD-branded piece of hardware, but rather an open specification for notebook vendors to follow. AMD will merely provide the GPUs and software ecosystem that makes the solution truly universal and plug-n-play, with "standardized connectors, cables, drivers, and OS support." Such a graphics card will interface with just any notebook with a high-speed interface (eg: Thunderbolt). Its drivers will make it crunch your games, while sending back output to your notebook's display, over the same connection. This gives you the mobility of an ultra-thin notebook. You should also be able to plug this into your work's boring Dell desktop, or any SFF ITX box. Pictured below is a Razer Core graphics solution embedding a Radeon R9 Nano. Other examples include MSI Gaming Dock and Alienware Graphics Amplifier.

Corsair Shows Off SF Line of SFX PSUs

Corsair took a plunge into the world of high-end SFF gaming PC builds, with the SF line of fully-modular PSUs, built in the SFX form-factor. The company showed off its 600-Watt variant, which offers enough juice and straws for an SFF build with a high-end graphics card. It may use a tiny 80 mm fan to keep itself cool, but features a Zero-Noise mode that keeps it off under a load threshold. Corsair plans to launch a broader lineup of SF Series PSUs in 2016.

Shuttle Announces the XS35V5 and XS36V5 Small Form Factor Computers

Shuttle Computer Group, Inc., one of the world's leading designers of small form factor (SFF) computers, announced its XS35V5 and XS36V5 with improved graphics performance. A host of features make them perfect for commercial applications including digital signage, kiosks, menu boards, and more.

"The latest 4K monitors need higher performance graphics, and our XS35V5 and XS36V5 make images and text pop out loud," said Marty Lash, director sales and marketing, Shuttle Computer Group. "They're easy to configure, have great connectivity, and provide cool-running, non-stop operation. They have everything an integrator needs for any display application."

XFX Radeon R9 Nano Starts Selling

AMD's Radeon R9 Nano graphics card, started selling on Amazon. The listing confirms the card's US $649.99 pricing. The card being sold is XFX branded, but as AMD's "co-flagship" product, there likely won't be any custom-design adaptations of this chip. The USP of the R9 Nano is to offer the highest possible performance for SFF gaming desktops. It has a nearly identical specifications sheet to that of the Radeon R9 Fury X, but with slightly lower clocks, and a far more conservative power-management system, which reduces its typical board power rating compared to the R9 Fury X by 100W, down to 175W. The first orders on Amazon should begin shipping after the 13th of September.

Edit: Sapphire's R9 Nano is also listed, at $649, too.

GIGABYTE Intros Z170N-Gaming 5 Mini-ITX Motherboard

GIGABYTE rolled out its premium SFF gaming PC motherboard that supports 6th generation Core processors, the Z170N-Gaming 5. Bearing the company's coveted G1.Gaming branding, this mini-ITX motherboard supports socket LGA1151 processors, with dual-channel DDR4 memory. The board draws power from a combination of 24-pin ATX and 8-pin EPS power connectors, and conditions it for the CPU using a 5-phase VRM. The CPU is wired to two full-size DDR4 DIMM slots, supporting up to 32 GB of dual-channel memory; and the board's lone expansion slot, a PCI-Express 3.0 x16, with a reinforcing brace.

Storage connectivity on the Z170N-Gaming 5 includes an M.2 slot with 32 Gb/s bandwidth (reverse side of the board), two SATA-Express 16 Gb/s ports, and six SATA 6 Gb/s ports. Display outputs include dual-link DVI and HDMI. USB connectivity includes two USB 3.1 ports (one type-C, one type-A), five USB 3.0 ports (three on the rear panel, two by header), and four USB 2.0/1.1 ports by headers. Network connectivity includes gigabit Ethernet (Killer E2200 controller), 802.11 ac WLAN (up to 867 Mbps), and Bluetooth 4.2. The onboard 8-channel audio solution combines a 115 dBA SNR CODEC with audio-grade electrolytic capacitors, and a headphones amp. Dual-UEFI BIOS makes for the rest of it. Expect premium pricing that's just north of $150.

AMD Radeon R9 Nano Faster than GeForce GTX 980, Pricing Revealed

AMD's upcoming super-compact graphics card, the Radeon R9 Nano, will be faster than NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 980, and a whopping 30% faster than the GTX 970, according to the company. At its size, it will offer the fastest pixel-crunching solution for compact ITX/SFF gaming PC builders, and that is something AMD want to capitalize on. If what we're hearing is true, then not only will the R9 Nano have the same core-config as the R9 Fury X, but also its price - US $649.99. At this price, the R9 Nano definitely isn't going to affect sales of the GTX 970 or GTX 980, which are currently going for as low as $299 and $465, respectively; but serve as a "halo product," targeted at SFF gaming PC builders.

AMD Does Trust its CPUs After all, to Offer Intel on Project Quantum as Options

AMD issued a statement on its upcoming Project Quantum SFF gaming desktop featuring Intel CPUs. The company clarified that it will offer both Intel and AMD processors, in the interest of consumer choice. AMD pointed out that the star-attraction in Project Quantum is the fact that it features two "Fiji" graphics processors in CrossFire configuration, to serve up graphics power unheard of, for this form-factor. Buyers will have a choice over the CPU, so if they feel that a CPU of a particular brand serves their needs better, they can make that choice.

Project Quantum will be an SFF gaming PC designed for super high resolution gaming. The company collaborated with liquid cooling majors to come up with a custom solution that cools the CPU and the two "Fiji" GPUs, over a common coolant channel, and a single large radiator. The system is split between two thermally-isolated chambers, with just coolant tubing and wiring running between the two. The bottom chamber features the mini-ITX form-factor motherboard, the dual-GPU video card, the SSD, and the power distribution PCB (PSU is external), while the top chamber is dominated by the radiator, and other liquid cooling components, such as the reservoir, pump, and a single large fan.

AMD Doesn't Trust its Own Processors - Project Quantum Driven by Intel Core i7-4790K

One of the three unexpected products based on the "Fiji" GPU, which AMD announced at its E3 event, Project Quantum, or the quest to design a 4K-worthy SFF gaming PC, which runs two "Fiji" GPUs in CrossFire, had the press assume that the rest of the system could be AMD-based, such as AMD-branded (albeit Patriot Memory manufactured) memory, AMD-branded (albeit OCZ manufactured) SSD; and importantly an AMD-made CPU or APU. Given its liquid-cooling, the prospect of a 95W "Godavari," or even upcoming "Carrizo" APU didn't seem far-fetched. Even a 95W FX CPU could have been deployed, since AM3+ on mini-ITX is not impossible.

When taken apart, Project Quantum was shown to be running an Intel Core i7-4790K "Devil's Canyon" CPU, on an ASRock-made mini-ITX motherboard, with its non-essential parts soldered out. The i7-4790K is neighbored by a pair of half-height Crucial Ballistix memory modules, which is excusable, since there are no half-height AMD Radeon memory modules, yet. The SSD is AMD-branded. The unit features a unified liquid cooling solution that's custom-made for AMD, by Asetek. A large (200 mm?) radiator, with a single fan, cools the CPU, the PCH, as well as the two "Fiji" GPUs.

ASRock Announces H81TM-ITX R2.0 Thin Mini-ITX Motherboard

ASRock rolled out the H81TM-ITX R2.0 thin mini-ITX motherboard for SFF PCs and AIO desktops. The socket LGA1150 motherboard is based on Intel's entry-level H81 Express chipset, and draws power from an external 2-pin DC power source. It features a 3-phase CPU VRM, a PCI-Express 2.0 x4 slot, apart from an mPCIe; two SATA 3 Gb/s ports, and two DDR3 SO-DIMM slots. Connectivity includes DVI and HDMI display outputs; two USB 3.0 ports, gigabit Ethernet, stereo HD audio, and a couple of USB 2.0/1.1 ports.
