Upcoming Sony INZONE Gaming Headsets for PC Revealed Ahead of Launch

There's no shortage of gaming headsets in the market, but for some reason it seems like Sony has decided that it can offer a range of competitive products in an already crowded segment. The company is said to be launching its INZONE brand of gaming headsets in the near future and there will be a total of three different models at launch. Common among all three models is support for Sony's proprietary 360 spatial sound, something many of its higher-end headphones already feature, as well as a fixed microphone on an arm, as well as integrated volume control.

The base model is the H3, which is a wired version that has a 3.5 mm jack, but also appears to ship with a USB sound card. Interestingly the H3 model has a switch for NC/AMB which suggests it has some kind of noise cancelling feature, where AMB stands for ambient sound mode. The next step up is the H7 which is the mid-range model and the first wireless option in the series. The design changes here as well, with only one point of attachment between the headband and the earcups, where the H3 has a more traditional two-point attachment. The H7 as well as the higher-end H9 comes with a USB dongle for wireless use, but also appears to have support for Bluetooth audio. Both models have a game/chat button, which may be for adjusting the volume separately between two different inputs.

The US is Considering Universal Charger Standard for Consumer Electronics

After the EU lawmakers agreed on making USB Type-C the charging interface standard for the union, it appears US senators are considering something similar. Although it's early days at this point, with just a letter penned by a few democratic senators to the Secretary of Commerce, the route to implementation is likely to be a lot longer. The reasoning is very similar to the one from the EU lawmakers, namely to reduce e-waste and make life easier for consumers. The letter states that "the average consumer owns approximately three mobile phone chargers, and around 40 percent of consumers report that, on at least one occasion, they "could not charge their mobile phone because available chargers were incompatible.""

It goes on to say that innovation should benefit consumers rather than come at their expense, especially as consumers end up with a collection of incompatible chargers and connectivity cables. In reality things are a bit more complex, as so often is the case, but there's really no reason why more standardised chargers can't finally become the norm, with the computer and mobile industries largely pushing for USB Type-C as the common connector, with some exceptions. The extra incentive by regulation should help speed things up, but the USB standard isn't as straightforward as the politicians seem to think, which could cause some consumer complaints during the transition period. However, certified USB PD compliant devices should make everyone's life simpler in the long term. Time will tell if the Secretary of Commerce agrees with the senators and there's obviously no guarantee that USB Type-C will be the chosen standard, regardless of how likely it is.

Akasa Launches the DuoDock MX Dual NVMe Dock

Drive docks can be extremely handy, especially the kind with support for two drives, as they generally allow you to duplicate your data quickly and easily. However, with a move towards M.2 drives, SATA based docks are slowly becoming less useful. Akasa has launched a solution to that problem with its new DuoDock MX, which accepts a pair of M.2 NVMe drives. The dock itself looks like a miniature drive dock with the addition of a cup-shaped lid that helps protect the drives from being touched during use. The front is host to a range of LEDs and a drive clone button, whereas around the back there's a power switch, a power connector and a USB Type-C port.

The only real downside is that Akasa has gone with a 10 Gbps PCIe to USB 3.2 bridge chip, which means that the data connection to a PC would be fairly slow by today's standards. Presumably the reason for this is to prevent the need of using some kind of heatsink on the M.2 drives, as most 20 Gbps NVMe to USB 3.2 solutions tend to require heatsinks. That said, Akasa has equipped the DuoDock MX with what the company calls an ultra-thin fan, although a picture on the company website suggests it's a small blower fan. Price-wise it's not what you'd call a bargain at £98 or around US$120, although that price includes British VAT.

USB Type-C to Become Mandatory Charging Port in the European Union

Lawmakers in the European Union have formally agreed to make USB Type-C the standard charging port in the union and although there are still a couple of minor hurdles ahead of it becoming a legal requirement, it's expected to be a requirement by the autumn of 2024. For it to become EU wide legislation, the EU parliament and Council still needs to approve the new law, but considering all sides seem to have largely agreed on the details, this is said to be largely formality at this point. However, the new law isn't just about making USB-C the standard used for charging mobile phones, tablets and other types of portable electronics, including laptops, but it also covers chargers and this is where things get a bit tricky.

The EU is legislating for what it calls a "harmonised fast-charging technology", which means that proprietary fast charging technologies might be out. The USB Power Delivery standard already supports fast charging, but it's still limited compared to some of the proprietary charging standards that are coming out of China, where some companies offer a full charge in 15 minutes. This may in itself not be that big of a deal, as all of these standards still use USB-C connectors and can rely on USB PD as a fallback charging method, but the EU also wants to unbundle chargers from devices. This means that any device that requires a proprietary charger to reach its optimal charging performance, will require consumers to buy a charger that used to come bundled with said device. This might not be a major hassle, but it's still an inconvenience in those cases and it's likely this will lead to higher prices for some products as well.

EIZO Expands Lineup of USB Type-C Monitors with 27-Inch FlexScan EV2781

EIZO Corporation today announced the release of the FlexScan EV2781 - a 27-inch, frameless IPS monitor with 2560 x 1440 resolution equipped with a USB Type-C terminal for improving productivity and sustainability features for lessening impact on the environment. The FlexScan EV2781 joins EIZO's line of FlexScan New Standard business monitors which offers a range of sizes from 23.8 to 31.5 inches and features USB Type-C connectivity.

It is the first New Standard monitor to offer a high resolution of WQHD (2560 x 1440 pixels) in a large 27-inch screen size. This is 1.8 times more screen space than conventional Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) monitors, which provides more comfortable display of multiple windows for efficient multi-tasking. A USB Type-C connection allows users to display video, playback audio, transmit USB signals, and supply 70 watts of power to connected devices, such as laptop computers. With many modern laptops designed for portability, this convenient connectivity makes it faster and easier to connect in hot desking environments or when working away from the office.

ASRock Reveals More Details About its Range of X670E Motherboards

Although there was a leak with a partial picture of the ASRock X670E Taichi board just days before Computex 2022 kicked off, it was hard to draw any real conclusions from it. The company has revealed more details about it, alongside the X670E Taichi Carrara, X670E Steel Legend and the X670E Pro RS. Let's start with the plain X670E Taichi, since this was the board that leaked. As is obvious now, the board doesn't feature a fan on the chipset heatsink, but rather a set of cogs, something we've seen before from ASRock. The board has very limited expansion options when it comes to PCIe slots, with a pair of x16 slots, which are sharing the 16 PCIe 5.0 lanes from the CPU and that's it. ASRock has gone for four M.2 slots, of which one is PCIe 5.0, most likely the one next to the memory slots. Interestingly, ASRock has kitted out the X670E Taichi with Thunderbolt 4, which means we're looking at an Intel chip here and there should also be support for USB4 and the two ports are located around the back of the board.

Biostar Shows Off X670E Valkyrie at Computex 2022

Biostar is seemingly trying to become more competitive in the consumer motherboard market and although the company has some catching up to do with the tier one motherboard brands, the company has put out some more interesting products in the past couple of years. Its VX670E Valkyrie motherboard seems to sit near the middle of the X670E models that have been announced so far, although it's a little bit hard to tell, as the company only provided partial specs. As this is an AMD X670E based board, the PCIe x16 slot is using PCIe 5.0, although it's multiplexed with the second x16 slot, which means if both slots are used, the bandwidth drops down to eight lanes per slot. The board layout doesn't suggest any PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots, but as this is mandatory on X670E board, we have to presume that the M.2 slot right below the x16 PCIe slot, is the PCIe 5.0 one. The board has a further three M.2 slots, as well as what appears to be an empty M.2 E-keyed slot for a WiFi/Bluetooth module.

Other features listed by Biostar includes 2.5 Gbps Ethernet via a Realtek chip, HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, six SATA 3 ports, one rear and one front header for USB Type-C Gen 3.2 2x2 (20 Gbps) ports, as well as Realtek based audio and a pair of ARGB headers. The board also has a debug LED and a few buttons and switches for resetting the CMOS, and powering the board on. Interestingly, Biostar also provided figures for the memory clock speed, as the company listed support for up to four sticks of DDR5 memory at 5600 MHz plus. AMD has already demoed higher memory clocks of 6000 and even 6400 MHz during its keynote, as supported by the footnotes that went alongside it, suggesting that this might just be a placeholder. Intel officially only supports 4800 MHz DDR5 memory, but speeds in excess of 6000 MHz doesn't appear to be an issue with the right motherboard and CPU combination. We'll have to wait and see what the official figures will be from AMD.

MSI Reveals the MEG 342C QD-OLED Display at Computex 2022

Rather unexpectedly, MSI has become the third company to reveal a QD-OLED based display, after Alienware and Samsung. The MEG 342C QD-OLED as the monitor is called, uses—just like the Alienware—a curved 34-inch QD-OLED panel. However, MSI has gone for FreeSync Premium Pro over G-Sync Ultimate, which should hopefully result in a lower retail price. The resolution is also the same as on the Alienware, 3440x1440 and the two also share the same 175 Hz refresh rate, 1800R curvature, 1000 nits peak HDR brightness and DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification. MSI claims the same DCI-P3 colour gamut of 99.3 percent, but the MEG 342C has a lower sRGB colour gamut of 139.1 percent versus 149 percent for the Alienware.

MSI has added a few features that the Alienware lack, such as a USB Type-C input with DisplayPort Alt Mode, KVM functionality and some MSI specific features such as a low blue-light mode and what the company calls "gaming intelligence". MSI also supports Picture-in-Picture and Picture-by-Picture, something that it's unclear if the Alienware supports or not. The MEG 342C is said to ship factory calibrated with a dE <2, which might not matter to most gamers, but should be important to anyone planning to use the display for video or photo editing work. MSI didn't disclose any pricing, nor any availability date.

Sonnet Announces McFiver PCIe Adapter Card with NMVe SSD, 10 GbE, and 10 Gbps USB Type-C

Sonnet Technologies today announced the McFiver PCIe Card, the latest offering in the company's expansive family of computer adapter cards. The McFiver card features five interfaces — two M.2 NVMe SSD slots, one 10 Gigabit Ethernet port, and two USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) Type-C ports — and fits neatly inside a single-width card space. The Sonnet card is compatible with Mac, Windows, and Linux computers with an available x8 PCIe slot, and with computers with Thunderbolt ports when installed in a Thunderbolt to PCIe card expansion system with an available x8 PCIe slot.

Sonnet's McFiver PCIe Card enables users to add high-performance internal SSD storage, plus 10GBASE-T (copper), 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE), and 10 Gbps USB-C ports to their systems but requires only a single card slot (instead of the three slots single-purpose cards would occupy). The McFiver card mounts one or two single- or double-sided M.2 NVMe 2280 PCIe SSDs (sold separately) for ultra-fast file access; using today's highest capacity SSDs, up to 16 TB of storage may be installed. The card's 10GbE port connects to 10GbE network infrastructure and shared storage systems via inexpensive Cat 6 or Cat 6A cabling. The USB-C ports connect and power two high-performance USB peripherals, supporting a full 10 Gbps connection through each port, and providing USB bus-powered SSD, SSD RAID, and hard drive devices with up to 7.5 watts of power through each port.

Kingston Digital Releases Touch-Screen Hardware-Encrypted External SSD for Data Protection

Kingston Digital, Inc., the Flash memory affiliate of Kingston Technology Company, Inc., a world leader in memory products and technology solutions, today announced the release of the newest addition to its encrypted lineup, IronKey Vault Privacy 80 External SSD (VP80ES). This marks Kingston's first innovative OS-independent external SSD with touch-screen and hardware-encryption for data protection. Using Kingston IronKey VP80ES is as innate as unlocking a smartphone and simple drag & drop file transfers. Featuring an intuitive color touch-screen and FIPS 197 certified with XTS-AES 256-bit encryption, VP80ES is designed to protect data while also being user-friendly. The drive is ideal to safeguard against Brute Force attacks and BadUSB with digitally-signed firmware for users from small-to-medium businesses (SMB) to content creators. Its military-grade security measures make it greatly superior over using the internet and Cloud services for securing important company information, documents, or high-res images and videos.

Along with its ease of use and hardware encryption, VP80ES offers additional features for data protection, like Multi-Password (Admin/User) Option with PIN/Passphrase modes and Configurable Password Rules. With Admin option, choose between numeric PIN or Passphrase modes, set Configurable Password Rules, or enable extended security options like maximum number of shared password attempts, minimum password length of 6-64 characters, alphanumeric password rules, auto-timeout to lock drive, randomize touch-screen layout and Secure-Erase to ensure maximum protection of your important files. The Admin password can be used to restore data and access should the User password be forgotten. For additional peace of mind, VP80ES' Brute Force attack protection crypto-erases the drive if the Admin and User passwords are entered incorrectly 15 times in a row by default.

MSI Announces X670 & X670E Motherboards for AMD Zen 4 Ryzen 7000

As Computex 2022 is largely an online event, MSI announced its upcoming AMD X670 and X670E boards shortly after AMD's keynote earlier today. Although the official press release didn't go into too many details, VideoCardz got their hands on more detailed information from MSI, which also brings some additional clarity to the platform as a whole. The most interesting slide is the one that lists the AM5 CPU's as having 28 PCIe 5.0 lanes, rather than the 24 PCIe lanes AMD mentioned in its presentation. This makes sense based on the fact that some X670/E boards have multiple PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots for NVMe drives. MSI's X670E Godlike and X670E Ace even feature three PCIe 5.0 x16 slots, although it's likely that this is in a x8/x8/x4 configuration, as these boards only have a single PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot. The same slide also mentions that all Raphael based CPUs will have support for HDMI 2.1 as well as DisplayPort 2.0, which will also work over USB Type-C Alt Mode. Interestingly it seems like not all AM5 CPUs will support DisplayPort 2.0, based on a footnote from MSI.

Other interesting titbits include a minimum CMOS chip size of 32 MB, which hopefully means we won't be seeing a repeat of the issue that the AM4 platform had, where AMD ran out of space for the AGESA, which led to multiple UEFI versions depending on the CPU used with the board. As far as MSI specific features goes, at least the high-end models will be getting eight to 10 layer PCBs and MSI will offer up to 24+2 power phases with improved heatsinks. MSI is also promising 60 W USB PD support for the front USB-C header. Just like ASUS, MSI will also offer an add-in card for more M.2 NVMe drives and MSI calls it the Xpander-Z Gen5 Dual. A common feature among all four boards is that they'll feature AMD's RZ616 WiFi 6E module, which is technically a MediaTek solution.
