New NVIDIA Broadcast App 1.3 Update Improves Noise Removal, Adds Support for More Cameras, and Reduces System Impact

NVIDIA's tool to enhance both live streaming and video conferencing just got even better. The Broadcast app has transformed the homes, apartments and dorm rooms of millions of content creators, remote students and workers into home studios through the power of AI—all without the need to purchase specialized equipment. The latest upgrade, NVIDIA Broadcast version 1.3, is available to download today and further improves noise removal, adds more camera compatibility, and reduces the impact on overall system performance.

NVIDIA Broadcast's noise removal AI effect has been widely praised for its ability to remove background noise while keeping speech clear and crisp. The exception? When someone speaks with a lot of emotion—typically speaking loudly or at a higher pitch—and their speech is sometimes inadvertently removed. This rarely happens, but is typically at the peak moments of excitement during a livestream. The new update addresses this with dedicated training sound profiles to retain that speech while removing the unwanted background noise.

Samsung to Introduce OLED-Powered Laptops With Under-Display Webcam

Samsung this year aims to bring OLED panels in laptops closer to mainstream, with the company already announcing it would be scaling its OLED screens to serve the 13,3-16" diagonal-craving population with the best visual quality available. The company is apparently aiming to take this further by investing into under-display webcams, which would prevent machines from shipping with large top bezel designs engineered to accommodate them. It also skirts implementation of other, more exotic solutions such as the one found in the Huawei Matebook X Pro - where the webcam is located in a mechanical pop-up on the keyboard area, and mostly shows viewers the inside of your nostrils.

Samsung says that this under-display design should allow laptop makers to achieve up to 93 percent screen-to-body ratio for an immersive viewing experience. Do keep in mind that such a design was implemented only once in the industry in ZTE's Axon 20 smartphone, which incidentally featured diminished selfie camera and display quality due to it being under-display, which even led to resolution compromises on the area of the display that sits over the camera. The idea in ZTE's phone - and is the same for Samsung here - is that the segment of the OLED display that covers the camera will turn translucent whenever the optics are activated. In the ZTE phone, this resulted in clear quality compromises. We'll see if Samsung fares better. There is currently no time to market on such OLED panels, however.

Logitech Says It's Doing Everything it Can to Thwart Webcam Shortages

Physical distancing has meant a resurgence in technologies meant to bridge gaps in geography (mainly webcams), as people have found that face to face conversations and team meetings are multiple steps above emails. However, ever since the pandemic (and associated lockdown and work from home) procedures began, it's been difficult to find any webcams available for purchase - at least at MSRP. Both new and used webcams have seen their prices increased in wake of tight supply and demand equations, and Logitech, as one of the premier webcam manufacturers in the world, has been on the forefront of fighting these shortages.

In its latest earnings call, Logitech President and CEO Brecken P. Darrel told investors that "PC webcams continued the strong momentum exiting last quarter with Q1 sales more than doubling to the highest quarterly level in a decade... We're ramping our capacity to meet demand, working to overcome component shortages as we do. We expect Q2 supply to improve, but still -- it still could remain pretty tight throughout the quarter." Demand equations in a time of pandemic aren't an exact science, so Logitech underestimating demand isn't all that unexpected. here's hoping the company can provide enough units for the resale channel so as to normalize pricing.

New USB 3.0 Webcam Controller Makes Quality 1080p Streaming Possible

Genesys Logic announced its newest application processor, the GL3620. This chip is designed to be the prime-mover of tomorrow's high-definition 1080p web-cameras, which will strike mainstream price-points. This chip takes advantage of the USB 3.0 interface, particularly its isochronous transfer mode, which guarantees sufficient bandwidth to stream uncompressed (lossless) 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels) video at 30 frames per second. This defined theoretical bandwidth limit is about 380 MB/s between the chip and the USB 3.0 host. Lossless video streaming from the webcam gives users the ability to use higher-quality software video encoders.

The Genesys Logic GL3620 also packs native HISP, which encodes RGB RAW data from CMOS sensors to interpolated YUV format. It also looks after bad pixel correction, image scaling, gamma correction, image quality enhancement, etc., to maintain backwards compatibility with USB 2.0, probably albeit, at lower resolutions. The chip also includes a native MJPEG encoder that offloads the host CPU from doing the lossless stream to MJPEG conversion to stream to IM clients. Genesys Logic will exhibit GL3620 demo at CES 2012 in Las Vegas from January 10th to January 13th 2012. In related news, Genesys logic will also demo its three other new USB 3.0 chips, the GL3520, which is a USB 3.0 hub controller; the GL3321, which is a USB 3.0 to SATA bridge chip; and GL3220, which is a USB 3.0 flash card reader controller.
