This device combines the functionality of a WiFi-N router, a NAS server, and a home media center into a single device. The device includes a MIMO-capable 802.11 b/g/n wireless router with one WAN and two LAN ports. It provides two USB 2.0 ports, which connect to any USB Mass Storage-compliant devices (be it flash drives, portable hard drives, or even drive boxes. The device can act as a media server for all your iOs/Android devices (smartphones, tablets, and smart media players). Lastly, it can also play back videos to a TV.

Planex Communications Intros Wall-Socket WiFi Router

Wireless network routers transitioned from big boxes with antennas to compact ones, and are now finding their way to the walls of households, blending with other utility connections that pass through walls (electricity, telephone/TV/cable/broadband, wired network, water, and gas). Japanese company is one of those pushing this change, with its MZK-KR150N WiFi b/g/n router that's designed to blend with other wall sockets.

The back-end of this router takes in AC power and WAN/uplink Ethernet cable. Its front-end has a hinged antenna, one downstream Ethernet cable, LEDs, and other configuration buttons. One of the six slots on the socket is blanked, so one can assume there's going to be a variant with two downstream Ethernet ports. The router offers wireless bandwidths with speeds of up to 150 Mbps, and wired bandwidths up to 100 Mbps. Slated for an April launch, the MZK-KR150N is priced at 9,800 JPY (US $118.4).

WiFi Alliance Working on Passpoint Technology; FON Providers, Rejoice

In many markets, people and businesses with WiFi hotspots have began monetizing their idle internet bandwidth by sharing it with others via middleman service providers such as FON. While the business model itself is a solid one where everyone wins, it is faced with technical hurdles. Unlike cellular ISPs that use 3G HSDPA technologies, where the size of a "cell" is much larger than the coverage area of a WiFi hotspot, and where moving between cells is seamless, with close to no drops in connectivity (providing there are no dead-zones between the cells), WiFi hotspots have the issue of logging out of one hotspot before logging into another.

This issue makes moving between multiple FON hotspots result in temporary connectivity loss, which can be unacceptable in some situations (such as downloading something important when moving in a bus). No less than the WiFi Alliance is taking interest in eliminating this technical hurdle, by working on what's known as "Passpoint". Simply put, WiFi Passpoint technology lets clients move between physical hotspots without renegotiation (security and DHCP), making the movement seamless, and resulting in little or no connectivity loss, again, provided there's no dead-zone between the coverage areas of the hotspots users are switching between. A novel concept, which will improve wireless internet service.

Intel 7-Series Desktop Board Executive Motherboards Pictured

Expansion slots include one each of PCI-Express x16, PCI-Express x4 (open-ended), PCI-Express x1, and legacy PCI. Storage connectivity includes six SATA (one of which is mSATA, for SSD caching). The PCH gives out four USB 3.0 ports, which are wired two each on the rear-panel and via a header to the front-panel. It uses a simple 5-phase VRM that should be enough to run LGA1155 processors. The socket is wired to four DDR3 DIMM slots supporting dual-channel memory. It has a variety of external connectivity.

Broadcom Launches First Chips for Gigabit Speed 802.11ac, Foundation of 5G WiFi

Broadcom Corporation, a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, today introduced its first family of 802.11ac (5G WiFi) chips designed for a broad range of product segments. The new IEEE 802.11ac chips are three times faster and up to six times more power efficient than equivalent 802.11n solutions. Visit Experience Broadcom @ CES for more news, blogs and multi-media from CES and www.5GWiFi.org for more information on consumer advantages of 802.11ac.

5G WiFi is the next generation Wi-Fi standard required for today's mobile and video era. Based on 802.11ac, 5G WiFi is a major evolutionary step from the existing 802.11a/b/g/n networks. Broadcom's 5G WiFi dramatically improves the wireless range in the home, allowing consumers to watch HD-quality video from more devices, in more places, simultaneously. The increased speed enables consumers to download web content from a mobile device faster and quickly synch large files, such as videos, in a fraction of the time it would take on a similar 802.11n device. Since 5G WiFi transfers the same volume of data at a much faster rate, devices enter low-power mode faster, which results in significant power consumption advantages.

Kuala Lumpur City Enforces WiFi in Eateries

Soon, citizens and tourists in Kuala Lumpur (KL), Malaysia will find eateries provide wireless internet like salt, pepper, and water. The City Hall has mandated that by April establishments serving food (restaurants, coffee shops, or street-food eateries), bigger than 120 m² floor size, should offer wireless internet as a value-added service, either for free, or for a reasonably low price. Providing wireless internet to patrons will be made a prerequisite for eatery operators applying for, or renewing their licences. "The Wi-Fi service is in demand and food outlet operators who offer it will be giving their customers value-added services," said mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad.

Then there's another problem the mayor faces. KL is known for its rich street-food culture, dominated by smaller eateries and hawkers. It can be argued that wireless internet in bigger establishments could draw some patronage away from these eateries and to those bigger ones. Mr. Faud said that the feasibility of installing free public WiFi in streets with concentrations of these smaller eateries is being studied. The citizens of KL are major consumers of public wireless internet services other than 3G HSDPA, there are as many as 1,500 public WiFi hotspots installed in the city.

That aside, this 14-incher packs a 1600x900 pixel display, is driven by 2nd generation Core processors (options include Core i7-2670QM/2630QM, Core i5-2430M/2410M, and Core i3-2330M/2310M), up to 8 GB of dual DDR3-1333 memory, NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M graphics with 1 or 2 GB VRAM, and a variety of storage options, including SSDs, high-capacity slow HDDs, or lower-capacity faster (7200 rpm) ones. DVD SuperMulti, BD-ROM, or BD-RW can be opted for. The audio is backed by punchy Bang & Olufsen ICEpower speakers. 720p web-camera, WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, and 3 -in-1 card reader, make for the rest. We don't have the pricing info. It will most likely only be launched in Taiwan and Greater China region, where Jay Chou is likely to have a big following.
