GIGABYTE Outs AORUS RGB Memory with AORUS Memory Boost Feature

GIGABYTE expanded its AORUS RGB DDR4 memory family with two new kits that introduce a proprietary performance enhancement dubbed AORUS Memory Boost. Exclusive to GIGABYTE's AORUS-branded motherboards (listed below), and requiring a BIOS update to use, AORUS Memory Boost is a toggle that runs the memory at a clock-speed and timing combination that's a notch above its highest Intel XMP profile. For example, the memory kits debuting with the feature today feature an XMP 2.0 profile for DDR4-3600. Flicking on AORUS Memory Boost runs them at DDR4-3733, in essence making it an additional memory profile that's exclusive to GIGABYTE motherboards.

The memory kits being launched today are GP-AR36C18S8K2HU416R and GP-AR36C18S8K2HU416RD. The former is 2x 8 GB (16 GB) dual-channel, while the latter is 2x 8 GB (16 GB) with two dummy modules. These dummy modules fill up vacant DIMM slots, look and light up like real modules, and could boost the aesthetics of your build without having you spend on two additional real modules. Out of the box, the memory modules (real ones) in these kits run at DDR4-2667 with 19-19-19-43 on Intel processors and 20-19-19-43 on AMD ones. The included DDR4-3600 XMP profile has timings of 18-19-19-39. GIGABYTE didn't mention how AORUS Memory Boost affects timings. Out of the box, the module voltage is 1.2 V, and the XMP profile dials it up to 1.35 V. The dummies work with whatever module voltage you specify in the BIOS, and interface with GIGABYTE RGB Fusion software. The company didn't reveal pricing.

Micron Memory Sets New DDR4 Overclocking World Record

Ballistix, Micron's global brand of high-performance gaming memory, has set a new overclocking world record for the fastest DDR4 memory frequency at 6024 MT/s. Leveraging performance-tuned Micron die and the innovation behind the new Ballistix Elite 4000 memory, the ASUS motherboard R&D team set the record using liquid nitrogen (LN2) cooling and the following system setup: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X processor; ASUS X570 ROG CROSSHAIR VIII IMPACT motherboard; Ballistix Elite DDR4 4000 8 GB memory.

"We're thrilled to have partnered with Ballistix to achieve this new world record," said Albert Chang, general manager of the motherboard BU for ASUS. "Both overclocking teams worked tirelessly to fine-tune BIOS settings on our newly-released ROG CROSSHAIR VIII IMPACT board to unleash the capabilities of the Micron die. Setting the new world record of 6024 MT/s with Ballistix Elite 4000 memory on our new ROG AMD X570 motherboard is a powerful demonstration of the engineering excellence ASUS ROG and Micron bring to the gaming ecosystem." The record-breaking frequency is posted on HWBOT, and the valid CPU-Z screenshot can be found here.

Reports of Ryzen 3000 High Idle Voltage Exaggerated, a Case of the "Observer Effect"

With AMD's 3rd generation Ryzen processors finally falling into the hands of PC enthusiasts, many early-adopters are taking to tech communities such as ours, to share their experiences with others. A trend appears to be emerging of users reporting higher-than-usual voltages for these processors when idling. AMD investigated this phenomenon, and declared this to be a non-issue. Apparently, most modern CPU monitoring utilities cause what is known as "the observer effect:" the process of measuring the processor's load itself causes load on the processor.

In case of the Ryzen "Matisse" processors, monitoring software appear to be polling each processor core for load by sending it instruction at a high rate of speed - sending them a workload of 20 ms every 200 ms. This causes the processor's embedded firmware to think that the cores are being subjected to workload, and it responds by increasing the clock-speeds, and proportionately voltages of all CPU cores. Monitoring software poll each CPU core, and so core voltages are raised across the chip.

GIGABYTE Intros DDR4 Memory Modules with Chunkier Heatspreaders

GIGABYTE expanded its teething DDR4 memory lineup with a new 16 GB (2x 8 GB) dual-channel DDR4 memory kit, called simply "GIGABYTE Memory 2666MHz." These modules lack the Aorus branding featured on the company's very first DDR4 modules. You instead get 32 mm tall, 7 mm-thick modules with a restrained design, and plain GIGABYTE branding.

One area where the company refined its design is the heatspreaders, which are thicker, and have more mass to them, even if they lack finnage. GIGABYTE's module does what it says on the tin - DDR4-2666 with 16-16-16-35 timings, at 1.2 Volts. Out of the box, it packs both JEDEC and XMP SPD profiles. Memory controllers that support DDR4-2666 (such as Intel "Coffee Lake" and later), should run it at the advertised speeds without any user intervention. For older platforms, an XMP 2.0 profile helps achieve the advertised settings. The modules are backed by lifetime warranty.

Intel's 9th Gen Core Gaming Benchmarks Flawed and Misleading

At its 9th Generation Core processor launch extravaganza earlier this week, Intel posted benchmark numbers to show just how superior its processors are to AMD 2nd generation Ryzen "Pinnacle Ridge." PC enthusiasts worth their salt were quick to point out that Intel's numbers are both flawed and misleading as they misrepresent both test setups - by optimizing Intel processors beyond their out-of-the-box performance, and by running AMD processors with sub-optimal settings.

Intel paid Principled Technologies, a third-party performance testing agency, to obtain performance numbers comparing the Core i9-9900K with the Ryzen 7 2700X across a spectrum of gaming benchmarks, instead of testing the two chips internally, and posting their test setup data in end-notes, as if to add a layer of credibility/deniability to their charade. The agency posted its numbers that were almost simultaneously re-posted PCGamesN, gleaming the headline "Up to 50% Faster than Ryzen at Gaming." You could fertilize the Sahara with this data.
