Intel's 13th Gen Raptor Lake ES CPU gets Benchmarked

Just hours ago a CPU-Z screenshot of an Intel Raptor Lake ES CPU appeared and the same CPU now appears to have been put through a full battery of benchmark tests, courtesy of Expreview. This upcoming 13th gen Core CPU from Intel is limited to a maximum clock speed of 3.8 GHz and as such, was tested against a Core i9-12900K that was clocked at the same speed, for a fair comparison. Both CPUs were used with an unknown Z690 motherboard, 32 GB of DDR5 5200 MHz memory with unknown timings and a GeForce RTX 3090 Founders Edition graphics card. According to Expreview, the 13th gen CPU is on average around 20 percent faster than the 12th gen CPU, although the extra eight E-Cores might have something to do with that in certain benchmarks.

In Sisoft Sandra 2021 the ES sample is as much as 51.5 percent faster in the double precision floating point test, which is the extreme outlier, but it's ahead by around 15-25 percent in most of the other tests. In several other tests, it's ahead by anything from as little as less than three percent to as much as 25 percent, with more multithreaded types of benchmarks seeing the largest gains, as expected. However, in some of the single threaded tests, Alder Lake is edging out Raptor Lake by 10 percent or more, for example in Pov-Ray and Cinebench. Most of the game tests favour Intel's 12th gen over the 13th gen ES sample, although it's possible that the limited clock speeds are holding back the Raptor Lake CPU. The two are either neck in neck or Alder Lake being ahead with anything from a couple of percent to almost nine percent. Keep in mind that it's still early days and everything from UEFI support to drivers will be improved before Raptor Lake launches later this year. There's also the limited clock speed which is likely to play a significant role in the final performance as well, but this does at least provide a first taste of what's to come. Head over to Expreview for their full set of benchmarks.

Gigabyte's Aorus Model S 12th is a Compact Mini-ITX Gaming System That Doesn't Rely on Liquid Cooling

Gigabyte has tried its luck at building compact gaming systems in the past, mainly part of its BRIX family of mini PCs, but none really took off. Last year the company introduced the Aorus Model S, although it didn't seem to garner much traction either, but it seems like Gigabyte is ready to give it another try, as the Model S 12th was introduced at Computex last week. Unfortunately there was no-one at the Gigabyte booth at the time that could tell us anything about it, so we had to go and dig up some details on our own. The base model appears to come with an Intel Core i7-12700K processor, which is fitted to a Z690 based Mini-ITX motherboard, paired with 32 GB of DDR5 4800 MHz memory. There's also a GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card with 8 GB of memory and a 2 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD.

However, what makes this system a bit special, is that it has a massive combined CPU and GPU cooler, with the entire system being cooled by one 120 mm and one 140 mm fan. The design is reminiscent of the Corsair One, albeit a bit more square and not quite as refined. The Model S 12th comes with all the features you'd expect from a higher-end PC these days, such as 2.5 Gbps Ethernet, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20 Gbps) port and a 750 W 80 Plus gold rated PSU. The system measures 190 x 189 x 400 mm (WxDxH) and has a volume of 14 litres. A decent, if not spectacular specification, although as we don't know the pricing, it's hard to say if it'll be good value or not.

Intel Ending the Xeon-W Series in Favor of Core "W" SKUs?

A leaked chipset block-diagram for the upcoming Intel W680 chipset platform sheds light on a possible major change in the way Intel sells workstation-grade processors. The Socket LGA1700-based W680 motherboards will support 12th Gen Core processors for Workstation, and the company makes no mention of the Xeon-W series. Tech enthusiast Wild Cracks points to a possibility we agree with—that Intel is upcycling the Xeon-W series to premium workstation-grade processors, possibly derived from the enterprise-segment silicon, such as the upcoming "Sapphire Rapids," and away from being just a client "Alder Lake" processor with ECC memory support enabled when paired with a W680 chipset motherboard.

If this theory holds true, then the Xeon W (2-channel memory platform) could make way for the "W" brand extension for 12th Gen Core processors. At this point we don't know how the "W" is used, whether it's something along the lines of "Core W9-12900" or "Core i9-12900W." The former sounds more plausible, as "12900W" could have a negative connotation with regards to its power. In terms of connectivity, the W680 offers much of what the top Z690 does, except x8/x8 multi-GPU support. The diagram doesn't give out any information about CPU overclocking support, although memory overclocking support is very likely.

MSI Partially Reenables AVX-512 Support for Alder Lake-S Processors

Intel's Alder Lake processors have two types of cores present, with two distinct sets of features and capabilities enabled. For example, smaller E-cores don't support the execution of AVX-512 instructions, while the bigger P-cores have support for AVX-512 instructions. So Intel has decided to remove support for it altogether not to create software errors and run into issues with executing AVX-512 code on Alder Lake processors. This happened just months before the launch of Alder Lake, making us see some initial motherboard BIOSes come with AVX-512 enabled from the box. Later on, all motherboard makers pulled the plug on it, and it is a rare sight to see support for it.

However, it seems like MSI is unhappy with the lack of AVX-512, and the company is reenabling partial support for it. According to Xaver Amberger, editor at Igor's Lab, MSI reintroduces selecting microcode version with its MEG Z690 Unify-X motherboard. There is an option for AVX-512 enablement in the menu, and it is indeed a functional one. With BIOS A22, MSI enabled AVX-512 instruction execution, and there are benchmarks to prove it works. This shows an advantage of 512-bit wide execution units of AVX-512 over something like AVX2, which offers only 256-bit wide execution units. In applications such as Y-Cruncher, AVX-512 enabled the CPU to reach higher performance targets while consuming less power.

AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT Scores Top Spot in 3DMark Fire Strike Hall of Fame with 3.1 GHz Overclock

3DMark Fire Strike Hall of Fame is where overclockers submit their best hardware benchmark trials and try to beat the very best. For years, one record managed to hold, and today it just got defeated. According to an extreme overclocker called "biso biso" from South Korea and a part of the EVGA OC team, the top spot now belongs to the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics card. The previous 3DMark Fire Strike world record was set on April 22nd in 2020, when Vince Lucido, also known as K|NGP|N, set a record with four-way SLI of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GPUs. However, that record is old news since January 27th, when biso biso set the history with AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT GPU.

The overclocker scored 62389 points, just 1,183 more from the previous record. He pushed the Navi 21 XTX silicon that powers the Radeon RX 6900 XT card to an impressive 3,147 MHz. Paired with a GPU memory clock of 2370 MHz, the GPU was probably LN2 cooled to achieve these results. The overclocker used EVGA's Z690 DARK KINGPIN motherboard with Intel Core i9-12900K processor as a platform of choice to achieve this record. You can check it out on the 3DMark Fire Strike Hall of Fame website to see yourself.
