The Georgians
Carve out a sturdy kingdom in the shadow of the Caucasus Mountains and use the rugged terrain to your advantage as you repulse countless foreign invasions. The Georgian unique unit is the Monaspa, a brawny cavalry unit whose strength increases in numbers. During the early medieval period, the regions south of the Caucasus Mountains were divided among numerous petty kingdoms that eluded foreign dominance largely through geographical isolation. Although the Byzantine Empire occasionally attempted to extend its influence into these polities, no significant lasting gains were made. However, the constant threat of foreign invasion catalyzed a gradual shift towards unity. In the early 11th century, Bagrat III finally succeeded in gathering these formerly squabbling states into the Kingdom of Georgia.

Newegg Slashes GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB Card Prices - $334 MSI VENTUS 2X OC

USA retailer, Newegg, is currently running a sale on a couple of custom NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB graphics cards. The cheapest option is an MSI VENTUS 2X BLACK 8G OC model, available for an an-all-time low price of $334 (representing a nice 16% discount)—thanks to a promo code ("ZIPTECH") shaving off a further $45.60 from the sale price of $379.99. NVIDIA set an MSRP of $399.99 upon the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti's launch back in late May, generating plenty of ambivalence within the PC hardware enthusiast community. That pattern will likely repeat with next week's premiere of RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB variants—its recommended retail price is set at $499, with tricked out custom cards predicted to go beyond $550.

Potential buyers of the bog standard 8 GB GPU in the States will be somewhat happy to discover that Newegg is not limiting the sale and discounts to a single model. MSI's slightly fancier (triple fan design) VENTUS 3X 8G OC card is going for $351.99, and the GIGABYTE RTX 4060 Ti EAGLE plus ASUS RTX 4060 Ti DUAL OC are available at the same price. These deals look quite good when placed next to discounted GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB custom cards—these are getting blown out for $329 - 339.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Drops Below the $1000-mark

NVIDIA's high-end GeForce RTX 4080 has, for the very first time, dropped below the $1,000-mark in pricing. A Newegg retailer-level promotion sees the MSI RTX 4080 Ventus 3X OC graphics card listed at $1,099, with a coupon shaving off a further $100. This is a 16.5% discount over the $1,199 NVIDIA baseline MSRP for the RTX 4080. The MSI Ventus 3X OC was originally launched at a $60 premium over the MSRP.

The GeForce RTX 4080 is seeing a much needed downward trend in street pricing, with the graphics card market as a whole experiencing a slump. The RTX 4080 in particular could be experiencing pressure from the Radeon RX 7900 XTX for NVIDIA and retailers to consider price-cuts, with the lowest street-price for the AMD flagship recorded at $881. It's probably hoped that a $999 price could attract some buyers away from the RX 7900 XTX. The GeForce RTX 4080 is an enthusiast-class graphics card designed for maxed-out gaming at 4K Ultra HD, with ray tracing enabled, and loaded with features such as DLSS 3 and dual-stream encoders and decoders.

ASRock Radeon RX 6600 Graphics Card Now $180 in the US

Newegg is currently running a promo offer on an ASRock AMD Radeon RX 6600 Challenger D 8 GB graphics card—a code can be used at checkout to remove a further $20 from the already low retail base price of $199.99. Prices of this previous generation GPU are falling internationally, but Newegg's all-time-low price is only available to customers in North America. The recent launch of a successor (Radeon RX 7600) has ultimately caused retail outlets to lower their asking prices for older cards—VideoCardz notes that certain custom RX 6600 custom cards have dropped this week to around €209 in Europe, following consistent downward trends since new AMD and NVIDIA offerings hit the market in late May.

TPU's review of AMD's Radeon RX 7600 GPU states that this new lower end RDNA3 card offers a 25% gen-over-gen performance uplift versus RDNA2's RX 6600 (non-XT). The latter certainly offers excellent value at its current very low price on Newegg, with a saving of $90 over the RX 7600's steadfast MSRP of $269.99. Further drops are anticipated following the arrival of NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4060 (non-Ti) on June 29, but Newegg's next batch of promotional codes could be less generous with discounts by then.

AMD Ryzen 5 7600X & 7600 CPU Prices Drop Significantly

Newegg has been running various discount promotions on Ryzen 7000-series desktop processors over the past month, but their latest offer finally affects one of AMD's lower end models. The Ryzen 5 7600X CPU is on offer over at the American e-tailer - by using a time limited promo code (MDSCS2342) when checking out you can get the price down to $209 - resulting in a saving of about $31 (from the normal $240). The Ryzen 5 7600 (non-X) CPU is not part of this Memorial Weekend promotion - it is currently listed at $223, with no active Newegg promo code granting a generous saving.

Both of these Zen 4 (Raphael) Ryzen 5 processors were awarded TPU's Editor's Choice accolade - despite receiving criticism for "high platform costs," so it is nice to see that the 7600X is available for just north of $200 in the United States - this saving can offset the added premium of an AM5 motherboard, DDR5 RAM and necessary CPU cooling solution (no Wraith unit is included in the slimline box). Customers in China are fortunate to get an even better online deal - the Ryzen 5 7600X and 7600 are available for way below MSRP via JD.com, with both CPUs priced at an all-time low of $183 (1299 RMB) each.

ASRock AMD Radeon RX 7600 Custom Card Already Discounted in Spain

AMD and its board partners have finally debuted Radeon RX 7600 graphics cards this week, and hardware enthusiasts were somewhat pleased about Team Red's last minute adjustment to the lineup's MSRP - rumors had to pointed to an expected $299 base price, but the monolithic RDNA 3 Navi 33 XL GPU (6 nm) card hit the market with a starting SEP of $269/€299.99. Buyer perception is difficult to gauge, but recent GPU product launches have indicated that folks are simply not rushing to the store to pick up the latest and greatest from AMD and NVIDIA alike.

A major Spanish e-tailer, CoolMod, is reported to be the first European store to offer a custom Radeon RX 7600 card at a discounted price of €259.94 ($279) which includes VAT - having adjusted the figure a mere day after the official launch - resulting in a saving of €40 (13% reduction). The ASRock Challenger OC 8 GB model was announced yesterday, alongside its Steel Legend and Phantom Gaming siblings - the latter has been reviewed by TPU's W1zzard. His assessment concludes: "At its price point, the RX 7600 offers virtually the same price/performance as the RX 6600 XT ($250), which makes it a tough sale, especially when you factor in price increases for custom designs. While AMD does have some technological improvements like HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 2.1 and AV1 video encode/decode, I think none of these are relevant in this segment, at least not to the majority of potential customers; NVIDIA has the DLSS 3 carrot to dangle in front of gamers. The RX 7600 should really be $199 or $229 to make it an interesting option."

Intel Arc A750 Limited Edition 8 GB Graphics Card Discounted to $199

Newegg has reduced the asking price for Intel's Arc A750 Limited Edition 8 GB graphics card - this reference model is now available at an all-time low of $199. It is too early to tell whether this a permanent discount or just a seasonal sale - but the online retailer could be reacting (in advance) to the launches of NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4060 (in July) and 4060 Ti models, as well as AMD's Radeon RX 7600 GPU lineup later this week.

Team Blue is putting a lot of effort into getting the hardware buying public to adopt its first generation of A-series/Alchemist discrete graphics cards - including the premiere of a slightly bizarre marketing campaign last week, called "Arc Balanced Builds." Intel has been navigating a market long dominated by NVIDIA and AMD, where plenty of folks have welcomed a third player on the field - but the Arc series experienced a much delayed and rough launch process last year. Intel has seemingly committed to next generation graphics technologies, with its Battlemage and Celestial architectures speculated to be in-progress at the company's AXG division.

Play Before You Pay: Steam Allows 90-Minute Gameplay Before Purchasing a Game

For gamers that ended up buying massively hyped games and found them to be quite disappointing, Valve is there to help. Valve's Steam will now allow gamers to play games for free for up to 90 minutes before forcing them to either pay to continue playing or end the game there. Starting with the new Dead Space Remake, gamers will be able to enjoy the first 90 minutes of gameplay without committing any funds towards the purchase of the game. Given that today's AAA titles can cost 59.99+ USD, this is an excellent choice for gamers wanting to try out the game before purchasing to finish the gameplay.

The new measure is already available to gamers on Steam, as the Dead Space Remake is the first to kick off the wave of 90-minute trials. Previously available for 59.99 USD, the game is on a 20% discount until May 29 and can be had for 47.99. We need to find out if more games will support this policy of free trials or if Steam will force some titles to do the same. Valve's older measures, such as refunds, are still in place; however, refunds require less than two hours of the game being played, so a refund can be valid.

AMD Ryzen 7 7700X Drops Down to $294.99

The AMD Ryzen 7 7700X has been discounted down to $294.99 in the US, which actually makes it less expensive than the Ryzen 7 7700 (non-X). Since it launched at $399.99 and later pushed down to $329.99, the latest discount makes it quite a catch. In Europe, the price is still holding at around €320, depending on the region, although it has been seen at €309 earlier.

The AMD Ryzen 7 7700X is an 8-core/16-thread Zen 4 CPU with 40 MB of cache and a 105 W TDP. It works at 4.5 GHz base and 5.4 GHz Turbo clocks. As spotted by Videocardz, the discount was available on both Amazon and Newegg but the one on Amazon has either been removed or ended and now holds at $339. It is possible that it was a limited deal coming directly from AMD. The next step is the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, but the price has not budged from $449.

Gunnir Releases White Edition Arc A770 Photon OC Graphics Card

Gunnir unveiled its top-end Intel Alchemist card closer to the start of this year - and this week the Chinese company has started selling a white edition of the Arc A770 Photon 16G OC graphics card. It has been reported that this is a world first - no other Alchemist card on the market features a custom cooler finished in white. Gunnir's standard Photon OC model - fitted with a dark gray-ish triple-fan design - has been available for a few months, and a snazzy blue Flux OC model also exists but is restricted to 8 GB VRAM.

Regardless of color choices, Gunnir's range topping Photon OC cards feature the best mainstream graphics hardware that Team Blue has to offer - namely an Alchemist SKU as seen in the (reference design) Arc A770 Limited Edition 16 GB model. Intel's board partners are having a tough time shifting their Arc lineup of graphics cards - discerning customers are wary of relatively immature architectures - and Gunnir has chosen to introduce a seasonal price cut across the Alchemist range. The promotion offers Chinese customers (via Gunnir's JD.com store) discounts on A380 (max. 33%), and A770 (max. 13%) GPUs.

Price War Looming for Mature Fab Nodes in Taiwan

The smaller foundries in Taiwan—at least compared to TSMC—UMC, PSMC and VIS to name the bigger players, but also other less well known foundries that produce chips on mature nodes, are getting ready for what looks like a price war. In all fairness, all of these companies have hiked their prices multiple times over the past couple of years, so it might just be a return to more normal pricing for these nodes that we're looking at. According to UDN media in Taiwan, the smaller foundries are offering discounts that range between 10 and 20 percent for new orders placed with them.

This is largely due to underutilised production lines for some nodes and the companies are trying to increase the utilisation rate of these nodes. The article mentions that the foundries with 8-inch wafer lines are those hardest hit, especially as they've produced more specialised ICs, such as fingerprint sensors, various driver ICs and power management ICs to mention a few. Some of these foundries are now running at 50 to 60 percent of their capacity, which doesn't bode well for the industry. On the other hand, 12-inch fabs aren't nearly as badly hit and might not offer as attractive discounts to potential customers. Another threat to the Taiwanese foundries is Samsung, which is reportedly also offering around a 10 percent discount on its mature nodes.

Atari Calls it Quits on the Atari VCS

What can only be summed up as one of the biggest failures when it comes to gaming consoles, the Atari VCS, is coming to an end, as Atari has decided to pull the plug. The company is said to have cancelled all of its "existing VCS manufacturing contracts", which means that after its current stock is sold out, it's unlikely that the company will make any more VCS consoles. The company is offering its current stock at a 20 percent discount, to anyone that would be interested in throwing away their money.

Atari's revenue from sales of the VCS and its accessories dropped from €2.3 million last year, to an abysmal €0.2 million this year, or a drop in revenue of 92 percent based on Atari's latest earnings report. This suggests that the company went from selling around a million units to selling around 10,000 units, based on the retail pricing of the VCS. Atari is apparently planning on launching new games based on its intellectual property, as well as getting into NFTs in the future, in addition to potentially licensing its brand to third parties for new hardware products. It would appear that history is repeating itself when it comes to Atari's success and not in a good way, as the company had a net loss of €5.4 million this year.

AMD Discounts the Ryzen 5000-series on its Official US Web Store, Ryzen 7 5800X3D Goes for US$329

AMD has dropped the price on most of its Ryzen 5000-series CPUs on its official web store and some models have been discounted by as much as US$250 over the MSRP. However, the most interesting discount here might be the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which has been discounted from US$449 to US$329, which makes it a pretty good deal for anyone considering getting what is one of the best CPUs out there for gaming.

Unfortunately, AMD's discounted deal appears to have been very popular and as such the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is currently sold out. It's unclear if AMD will add more stock at the same price point, but what is clear is that the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is a popular CPU, especially at what now appears to be the right price point. As mentioned, AMD has discounted its entire lineup of Ryzen 5000-series CPUs, so if you've been on the fence whether to upgrade or not, now might be a good time to do so. That said, most online retailers appear to be offering the same CPUs at the same, or at least almost the same price, making the Ryzen 7 5800X3D the only real bargain to be had, if it comes back in stock. Unfortunately, AMD hasn't discounted its CPUs in other regions, so if you're outside of the US, you're not going to see any special deals if you visit the AMD web store.

Intel Apparently Discounting 10th-Gen CPUs in Bid to Claw Market from AMD

Intel has apparently begun discounting its desktop CPUs, perhaps in a bid to try and maintain market share earning momentum the company garnered in the last few months. As AMD struggles to keep up with consumer demand for its latest Ryzen 5000 series, Intel looks to be capitalizing on its vertical integration (as well as the fact that Intel owns its own fabs and fabricates in a more than mature 14 nm process). A interesting move by the blue giant, who has generally opted out of a price reduction strategy - a move that might make Intel look on the back foot, and as an alternative budget brand, to the incommensurately smaller AMD.

Various retailers have been carrying Intel inventory with much reduced prices over their official MSRP. Amazon, for example, is offering the Intel Core i7-10700K for $344, down from its average pricing of $383. In the same retailer, the iGPU-less i7-10700F processor is down from $315 one month ago to just $229. Odds are that this is an Intel decision because if one considers the amount of demand on PC products and components due to COVID-19, it's very likely that consumers who can't get an AMD 5000-series CPU will still choose to purchase hardware - even if it has to be from Intel. So retailers eschewing part of their profits at a time like this seems slightly off-character.
