Asustor made a strong entry into the NAS market with their AS series. The AS-606T, today's review victim, couples strong hardware, for a NAS, with a lot of rich features, putting itself into the SMB category where the competition, mostly derived off of two key players in this field, QNAP and Synology, is strong. ADM, Asustor's operating system, managed to impress me with its stability and the features it includes, although it is pretty new. I inevitably found some shortcomings, like the fact that you cannot remove the first volume without defaulting the NAS to its initial settings, but Asustor's R&D department was very open to my remarks, and they have informed me that their next update will take care of this matter.
The many optional application packages available for the AS-606T really reflect Asustor's strong support, especially considering the short period this product has been available on the market. Another noticeable advantage of this NAS is its fully functional HDMI port through which it can be converted into a richly featured media player. SMB administrators surly won't be thrilled by this feature, but it will probably appeal highly to enthusiast users.
Other features, like the custom message display function of the LCD screen, night mode for the LED indicators, its short boot time, support for S3 sleep state, and a highly desirable front USB 3.0 port, prove that Asustor paid great attention to the details, and that will make their product stand out from the crowd. Although its overall data-transfer speeds were a little lower than those of the QNAP TS-669 Pro using similar hardware, I am pretty sure that future upgrades to the operating system will close that gap, especially since this specific platform can potentially perform better.

To sum up, this NAS offers loads of features and manages to achieve a pretty good price/performance ratio, which will help it claim a big market share regardless of the strong competition it will face in the SMB category. Asustor surely will rock the competition with these new NAS servers, and we will hopefully see NAS prices drop because of it.
