Value & Conclusion

  • The Rantopad MXX currently retails for 64.99$ on Amazon.
  • Driverless
  • Bright LEDs
  • Cheap for a mechanical keyboard
  • Compact
  • No native macro or key-rebind support
  • Loud spacebar even by clicky mechanical switch standards
  • No means to adjust tilt and height
The Rantopad MXX does all the right things at its price point—it, for instance, has lighting options many more expensive keyboards completely lack. Its major flaws are the lack of support for multiple lighting profiles and custom key bindings. Of the two, custom key binding can be taken care of by such third-party software as Autohotkey. The lighting profiles are also a minor gripe because there are other mechanical tenkeyless keyboards at this price point with even better backlighting. Another thing to keep in mind is that the lack of a numpad will significantly slow you down if you have to put in a lot of numerical data.

The build quality is also up to scratch, using an aluminum base plate and a sturdy plastic shell that gives the keyboard good rigidity and saves on weight, which makes the MXX much more portable than other tenkeyless keyboards that use steel base plates. However, its low weight does not compromise its ability to stay in place as the three rubber feet provide excellent grip on all typical desk surfaces, wood, glass, and plastic included. The keycaps' walls are a little thin in comparison to those of more expensive brands, but not by enough to matter. The use of a fully sized USB port for the keyboard's cable connection just increases its lead as a portable keyboard since it eliminates the reliability issues micro USB connectors tend to suffer from.

Rantopad's MXX is the ultimate budget tenkeyless mechanical keyboard. It will serve you well if it spends its life on your desk and will serve you well even if you put it into your bag and carry it with you for use on the go. It does suffer from a few hiccups, but its price point and feature set more than makes up for them.
